There are multiple types of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eating disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two of which are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anorexia nervosa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bulimia nervosa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These conditions are commonly abbreviated to \u201canorexia\u201d and \u201cbulimia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anorexia nervosa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is characterized by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to extreme <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dieting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, starvation, or too much exercise. Those with anorexia have difficulty maintaining a healthy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body weight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in consideration of height and age. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulimia nervosa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is characterized by a cycle of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">binging<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purging<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through self-induced vomiting, use of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laxatives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, exercise, or fasting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anorexia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anorexia can occur simultaneously with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatingdisorderhope.com\/treatment-for-eating-disorders\/co-occurring-dual-diagnosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another mental illness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/depression-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low self-esteem<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and striving for perfection are also common traits. History of trauma including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse can make people susceptible to developing an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eating disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the condition serving as a control mechanism when facing trauma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media and culture emphasize <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thinness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a beauty standard which puts pressure on young people, especially girls, to have this body type. Professions or sports that emphasize <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thinness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as ballet, figure skating, running, and modeling can put pressure on individuals. Additionally, eating disorders are the second most deadly mental illness (behind opiate addiction).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulimia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19685955\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed a group of 496 adolescent girls in a U.S. city over a span of eight years and found that by the age of 20 more than 5% of the girls met the criteria for anorexia, bulimia, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">binge eating disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. 400;\">criteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <em>Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of <\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental Disorders<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DSM<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>-5<\/em>) must be met for a person to be diagnosed with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anorexia nervosa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These criteria include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low body weight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in consideration of an individual\u2019s age, sex, developmental trajectory, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; fear of gaining weight despite a normal current weight, and disturbance in the way an individual views <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body weight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or shape.
