Exercise is good for your immune system, so why would you stop doing it while recovering from an infection?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, some antibiotics can cause side effects that may affect your ability to do vigorous exercise. Whether you\u2019re a regular gym rat, a weekend athlete, an occasional spin class enthusiast, or a marathon runner-in-training, here\u2019s what you need to know about working out on antibiotics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/resources\/antibiotics\">Save on common antibiotics<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to exercise while taking antibiotics?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer is, generally, yes: Most antibiotics are safe to take while engaging in normal exercise, given that you\u2019re otherwise healthy and feel well enough to work out. However, you should remember that your body is not operating at its best when you have an infection, so there are some things to consider first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny infection will put stress on the body,\u201d says Michael Billet, MD, an emergency department physician at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. \u201cHow this affects the patient will depend on a lot of factors, like the type of infection, its severity, and the patient&#8217;s baseline health or other medical issues.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is one major class of antibiotics to watch out for when it comes to working out: fluoroquinolones. This class of antibiotics, which includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cipro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ciprofloxacin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cipro), can be used to treat respiratory, skin, and urinary tract infections, but they also<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.center4research.org\/antibiotics-riskier-others-know-quinolones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carry a serious risk of sports injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/quinolones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluoroquinolones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [can cause weakened] tendons, and, when combined with vigorous exercise or weight-bearing, can lead to strains, sprains, and even tendon rupture,\u201d warns Dr. Billet, who adds that these side effects are most common when fluoroquinolones are taken in high doses or for a long duration. However, short courses of treatment shouldn\u2019t be overlooked either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, unlike most antibiotics\u2014which are cleared fairly quickly from the body\u2014fluoroquinolones can still cause injury after you\u2019ve stopped taking them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t prescribe them to athletes [because] even being off of them, there\u2019s an associated risk of tendon injury for a long time afterward,\u201d says Joshua Scott, MD, a primary care sports medicine physician at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4080593\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Athletic Training<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that fluoroquinolones have the potential to cause tendinitis, tendon pain, or rupture up to six months after discontinuing their use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do the recommendations change based on the type of exercise you\u2019re doing?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not usually. The type of exercise is less important than the type of antibiotic; if you\u2019re on fluoroquinolones, you shouldn\u2019t be doing any kind of moderate or intense exercise, but those activities are typically safe while taking most other classes of antibiotics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, exercises that are normal for you\u2014whether it\u2019s weightlifting, running, or yoga\u2014are okay to continue doing when you\u2019re on antibiotics like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/penicillin-v-potassium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/azithromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azithromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as long as you feel up to it. If you&#8217;re unsure how your medication may affect your workout routine, ask your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of doctors use the most commonly recommended antibiotic for an infection without taking into account that someone is a CrossFit trainer, runs 40 miles per week, or has an active lifestyle,\u201d says Dr. Scott, who advises letting your healthcare provider know if you exercise more than the average person before leaving with a prescription.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the side effects of working out while taking antibiotics?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the risk of sports injury with fluoroquinolones, there are a few other side effects to keep in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAntibiotics most commonly affect the GI tract, causing upset stomach and nausea, which could make it difficult to stay well hydrated,\u201d says Dr. Billet. \u201cThese side effects are probably the biggest issue aside from the infection itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for whether a course of antibiotics can affect your athletic performance or worsen your fatigue, there\u2019s more anecdotal evidence than actual scientific evidence. Dr. Scott says some studies have shown that the relationship between fatigue and antibiotic use may be higher with certain ones, like doxycycline, but<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8495702\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an old study from 1993<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, conducted on military trainees, found no connection between perceived fatigue and antibiotic use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget that your body will be working hard alongside those antibiotics to fight off the infection, which<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can make you feel more tired than usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can antibiotics interact with workout supplements?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In theory, yes. Dr. Scott says that many foods, drinks, and supplements can affect how well antibiotics work, so it\u2019s important to talk to your healthcare provider about any workout supplements you\u2019re taking before they prescribe you an antibiotic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re still uncertain, it\u2019s better to refrain from using any supplements until you\u2019ve finished your antibiotics. Supplements often contain herbs or ingredients that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diet-supplements-can-interact-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can interact with other medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fitness-supplements\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workout supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> frequently contain caffeine, which can alter the effectiveness of the antibiotic,\u201d says Dr. Billet, \u201cand regulation-wise, many workout supplements fall into a grey zone of not quite food, not quite medicine\u2014so even from a reputable vendor, you don&#8217;t exactly know what you&#8217;re getting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why it\u2019s important to rest when recovering from an infection<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise on antibiotics, it doesn\u2019t mean you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although exercise is a great way to boost your immune system, Dr. Scott says that resting while you\u2019re being treated for an infection is also a great time to take a break and that you\u2019ll usually get better faster if you rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen your immune system is having to fight across several different fronts\u2014you\u2019re taking an antibiotic, fighting a sinus infection, and utilizing muscles [during exercise] that have to be repaired and restored\u2014that can all be hard on the body and delay recovery,\u201d he explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of continuing to work out at your usual frequency or intensity, use the time to sleep, stay hydrated, and eat well.
