A discussion with your healthcare team or your pharmacist can help you to avoid any unexpected side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-omega-3-fatty-acids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatty fish\u2014such as sardines, mackerel, and salmon\u2014are full of omega-3 fatty acids and have been associated with lowering triglycerides, blood pressure, inflammation, along with reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. In addition to fish, flaxseed oil, chia seeds, walnuts, and canola oil are also high in omega-3s. A blood test can check your omega-3 levels and if you\u2019re deficient, your healthcare provider may suggest a supplement. A target dose of 1 gram per day of an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/should-you-be-taking-an-omega-3-supplement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 supplement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered a good place to start. However, some physicians may advise their patients to increase their dosage if they have very high levels of triglycerides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOmega-3 fish oil supplements have been shown to increase (good) HDL levels of cholesterol, while reducing plaque buildup in the arteries,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/conciergemdla.com\/about-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abe Malkin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician and founder of Concierge MD in Los Angeles, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study published in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/eurheartjsupp\/article\/22\/Supplement_J\/J49\/5918443\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Heart Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, found that the medication, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vascepa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (icosapent ethyl)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not only helped to reduce plaque in the heart\u2019s arteries, but also reduced the risk of heart attack and stroke by 26% in those at an increased risk of heart disease.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally approved by the FDA in 2012 to reduce triglycerides, Vascepa received an additional indication approval in 2019 as an adjunct therapy for reducing cardiovascular risk.\u00a0 Vascepa is made from a highly-purified form of EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While folate is best when consumed in foods such as vegetables, beans, and citrus fruit, some people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celiac disease or an inflammatory bowel disease like Crohn\u2019s may need a folate supplement. \u201cIf you\u2019re deficient in folate, there\u2019s really no downside in taking a supplement,\u201d Dr. Malkin says.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2205876\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that folic acid, taken on a daily basis, could reduce the risk of stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications\u2014such as Rheumatrex (methotrexate), used to treat autoimmune disorders, or seizure drugs such as Dilantin (phenytoin)\u2014can also affect how the body absorbs folate. Talk to your physician before starting a folate supplement and to determine the best dosage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/folic-acid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folic acid coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-grape-seed-extract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Coenzyme CoQ10\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While CoQ10 appears naturally in the body, you can also boost your intake by including foods such as salmon, tuna, broccoli, and cauliflower in your diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those already taking cholesterol-lowering statin medication, Sirchio-Lotus, says adding a CoQ10 supplement can reduce the muscle aches and joint pain some people experience as a side effect of statins. \u201cIn many other countries, doctors recommend patients take both stains and CoQ10,\u201d Sirchio-Lotus says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6486033\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows CoQ10 may help to lower blood pressure, while another<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25763201\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people with high triglycerides, high cholesterol, and a history of heart attack saw an improvement in both their LDL and HDL cholesterol levels and blood pressure after taking 200 mg of CoQ10 daily for 12 weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/coenzyme-q10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coenzyme Q10 coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-vitamin-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Other studies have found that vitamin D might help to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmcd-journal.com\/article\/S0939-4753(18)30001-2\/fulltext\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent strokes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0193070\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the risk of diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf a blood test shows that someone is deficient in vitamin D or even in the low-normal levels, their doctor may recommend starting with a vitamin D supplement,\u201d explains Dr. Malkin, who says 2000 IU per day from a supplement is generally safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-d3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-supplements-are-bad-for-your-heart\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What supplements are bad for your heart?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while the above supplements benefit heart health, doctors recommend exercising caution with the following.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Calcium<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While a diet rich in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/calcium-citrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promotes strong bones and a healthy heart, too much calcium can cause health problems.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/JAHA.116.003815\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that taking calcium supplements might increase plaque buildup in the aorta and other arteries. The study went on to recommend eating a diet high in calcium-rich foods, rather than taking a calcium supplement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If tests show you\u2019re deficient in calcium, your healthcare provider may recommend taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a supplement. Doses ranging from 500 mg to 700 mg should be plenty, unless your doctor specifically tells you to take more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-grapefruit-juice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Grapefruit juice\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking a glass of grapefruit juice may sound like a healthy idea, but Sirchio-Lotus says it can be dangerous when taken with certain high blood pressure and cholesterol medications. She recommends talking with your doctor to see if your specific medication will negatively interact with grapefruit juice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-herbal-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Herbal supplements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid bitter orange, gingko, ginseng, licorice, and St. John\u2019s Wort. They all have the potential to raise blood pressure and may also interfere with blood pressure medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-choose-a-heart-health-supplement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to choose a heart health supplement<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When choosing heart health supplements, Sirchio-Lotus recommends looking for products that don\u2019t contain unwanted ingredients such as artificial colors or fillers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before going the supplement route, talk to your healthcare team about getting tested to see if you\u2019re deficient in certain nutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, look for supplements that have the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usp.org\/about\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USP Verified mark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. USP is an independent, non-profit organization that sets federally recognized public standards of quality for dietary supplements.
