However, you won\u2019t be able to use the health benefits until your eligibility is confirmed and you\u2019ve paid your premium.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-various-open-enrollment-periods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the various open enrollment periods?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annual open enrollment periods are the time of year during which Americans can make changes to their elected health insurance coverage (such as the group health plan they receive through their employer) or purchase new insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace (also known as Obamacare). (People with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/difference-between-medicare-and-medicaid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare or Medicaid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will have different stipulations and times for enrollment.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open enrollment also may be a good time for beneficiaries to add a spouse or dependents, or otherwise change their household composition, to their ACA plan if they haven\u2019t done so already.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you plan to renew your current plan, it\u2019s a good idea to check the fine print for the coming year\u2014what is and is not included (such as prescription medications and copays) changes year to year, so you\u2019ll want to make sure you have the right coverage for you and your family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you miss the open enrollment period for the federal ACA marketplace, you may still be able to elect new coverage or make changes to your plan during a special enrollment period. However, you must have one of the following qualifying life events to participate in special enrollment:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in your household<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in your residence<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of your health insurance coverage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other qualifying events, such as becoming a U.S. citizen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"when-is-aca-open-enrollment-for-2026-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When is ACA open enrollment for 2026 coverage?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open enrollment dates for 2026 are Nov. 1, 2025 through Jan. 15, 2026 in most states, giving beneficiaries about six weeks to shop and compare plans before purchasing them through one of the health insurance exchanges (either the federally run healthcare.gov or their state-run marketplace).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your state operates its own health insurance marketplace, those dates may vary slightly (for instance, California, Colorado, and Washington, D.C., have permanently extended their dates into January). In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplekeep.com\/blog\/how-the-affordable-care-act-aca-varies-by-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 18 states and Washington D.C. have state fully state-run marketplaces. Check the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/marketplace-in-your-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marketplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your state for more information on enrollment deadlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you sign up for coverage during the Open Enrollment Period prior to Dec. 15, your insurance will take effect Jan. 1. If you sign up for coverage during the Open Enrollment Period after that date, your insurance will start Feb. 1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Medicare Open Enrollment Period differs from ACA Open Enrollment Period. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/sign-up-change-plans\/joining-a-health-or-drug-plan#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare open enrollment for 2026<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, 2025, with plans going into effect on Jan. 1, 2026. Medicare also offers a number of other unique enrollment periods for varying purposes. You can visit medicare.gov to learn more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-if-you-miss-aca-open-enrollment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you miss ACA open enrollment?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you miss the 2026 open enrollment deadline, you run the risk of not having health insurance coverage for an entire year (unless you qualify for a special enrollment period). This means you may have to pay for medical costs, such as doctors visits, prescription medications, and emergency services, out of pocket.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the ACA previously required those who did not have health coverage (and were not exempt) to pay a fine (otherwise known as a Shared Responsibility Payment) on their federal tax return, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act did away with that payment for tax year 2019 and beyond. However, there are a handful of states that still charge a financial penalty, including California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Washington D.C., and Massachusetts, so you\u2019ll want to check with your state\u2019s law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/penalty-for-no-health-insurance\/\"><b>Is there a tax penalty for being uninsured?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/missing-open-enrollment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coverage options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worth investigating if you\u2019ve missed the open enrollment period:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your spouse or partner\u2019s plan<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your parent\u2019s plan, if you\u2019re younger than 26<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicaid or CHIP (Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short-term plans\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplemental insurance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help offset prescription medical costs without insurance, there\u2019s also the SingleCare discount card.
