Despite feeling tired, you just can\u2019t <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sleep-aids-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fall asleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so after a while, you reach for your prescription medication, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ambien\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But wait! Is it safe to mix Ambien and alcohol?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Ambien?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ambien\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien (zolpidem)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a prescription drug approved by the FDA, which is indicated for short-term use to treat insomnia. Ambien tablets contain the active ingredient zolpidem tartrate, a sedative-hypnotic drug. The brand-name and generic are available in immediate or extended-release form\u2014called Ambien CR or zolpidem tartrate extended release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien is a Schedule IV <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/controlled-substances-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled substance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of the possibility for abuse or dependence. As such, it is indicated only for short-term use, and should not be taken long-term. When prescribed by a healthcare provider, you should take the pill immediately before bedtime, when you can get at least seven to eight hours of restful sleep. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, altered vision, decreased alertness, and impaired driving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien also has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that states the drug may cause individuals to experience something called complex sleep behaviors, such as sleepwalking, sleep-driving, or any other activities you do while not fully awake. In fact, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/DAWN-SR150-Zolpidem-2014\/DAWN-SR150-Zolpidem-2014.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) found that the combination of Ambien and alcohol was responsible for 14% of Ambien-related emergency room visits, with 13% requiring admission to the intensive care unit (ICU).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central nervous system (CNS) depressant medications increase the activity of a substance called GABA, which produces a sedating and calming effect\u2014but also slows brain activity. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=c36cadf4-65a4-4466-b409-c82020b42452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ambien has CNS depressant effects, which can lead to dangerous side effects such as slowed or difficulty breathing, slowed heart rate, and even loss of consciousness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When patients mix Ambien with other CNS depressants, such as drugs or alcohol, the CNS effects are increased. This can cause profound sedation, slowed breathing\u2014which could even lead to a loss of consciousness\u2014coma, or even death in some cases. The DAWN study reported that 57% of emergency room visits for Ambien overdose also involved another drug or alcohol use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixing Ambien and alcohol can also increase the risk of next-day impairment (also called psychomotor performance impairment), including driving impairment. Ambien also puts older individuals at a greater risk of falls, so combined with alcohol, there is additional impairment, leading to a higher risk of falls and fractures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I take other sleeping pills with alcohol?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Ambien, other popular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-sleep-aids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription sleep aids for insomnia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as Lunesta (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eszopiclone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eszopiclone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Sonata (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zaleplon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zaleplon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), are CNS depressants. They\u2019re known as \u201cz-drugs\u201d and should not be combined with alcohol, for the same reasons as Ambien.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter (OTC) sleep aids that contain doxylamine or diphenhydramine are popular treatment options for insomnia, but they cannot be mixed with alcohol either. Even though these medications (available under popular brand names like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/unisom-sleeptabs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unisom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol-pm-extra-strength\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol-PM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are OTC, combining them with alcohol can cause the same reactions as Ambien.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary supplements like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/valerian-root\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valerian root<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are popular remedies used for insomnia. However, these supplements can also interact with alcohol. In short, most sleep aids\u2014prescription or OTC\u2014are not safe to mix with adult beverages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal symptoms of Ambien-alcohol<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you combine alcohol and Ambien or other z-drugs on a regular basis, and then you stop, you will likely have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholaddictioncenter.org\/alcohol\/mixing\/ambien\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withdrawal symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which could be severe or even deadly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within just eight hours of your last drink, you may start having a headache, anxiety, or palpitations. Symptoms can progress to fever, sweating, high blood pressure, and confusion. Some patients experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delirium tremens (DTs), which can occur several days later and cause disorientation, hallucinations, and seizures. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you stop taking Ambien, withdrawal symptoms can occur within two days. These symptoms may include anxiety, tremors, mood swings, delirium, panic attacks, and seizures. Because of this, it\u2019s important to seek help from a medical professional when attempting to stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for Ambien and alcohol addiction<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have an Ambien and alcohol addiction, you will need a medically supervised detox program. After detox, you may need rehab, with individual, group, and family counseling support groups, and medication. You can work with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who are addiction specialists and will help return you to your best overall health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting help is the first step to addiction treatment. Psychology Today is another helpful resource.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 safer ways to manage sleep disorders<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t want to give up your nightly glass of wine, you can try some non-medicinal methods to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-sleep-better\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve your sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of Ambien. Sleep hygiene is a term that refers to developing better sleep habits. Here are some tips you can try:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Make your bedroom conducive to sleep. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep out noise and light, and sleep at a comfortable temperature that\u2019s not too hot or too cold.
