But what happens when the medication you take for one condition causes other health conditions to worsen? This is something people at risk for heart problems need to consider when taking medications that can increase heart rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An increase in heart rate is not necessarily problematic. In fact, our heart rates go up and down regularly depending on a number of factors, some of which are<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/holiday-heart-healthy-tips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy for your heart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014like exercising. But for some individuals, drugs that increase heart rate may be a concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is resting heart rate?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resting heart rate is your baseline heart rate. It is the number of beats per minute your heart makes when you are relaxed, sitting or lying down, and not doing physical activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-heart-rate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">normal resting heart rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for adults over 18 is<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/heart-health\/what-your-heart-rate-is-telling-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 to 100 beats per minute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People who regularly exercise vigorously may have a heart rate as low as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/fitness\/fitness-basics\/target-heart-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 beats per minute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To calculate your heart rate, first find your pulse by placing your index and middle finger either on your wrist under the base of your thumb, or on your neck on either side of your windpipe. You may need to move your fingers slightly until you feel the steady pumping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching a clock with a minute reading, count the number of beats you feel in 15 seconds and multiply that by 4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resting heart rate = ____ beats per 15 seconds x 4.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is maximum heart rate?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your maximum heart rate is the rate at which your heart is beating when it is working its hardest.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physicalactivity\/basics\/measuring\/heartrate.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To estimate your maximum heart rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, start with 220 and subtract your age. For example, someone who is 30 would have an estimated age-related maximum heart rate of 190, while someone who is 70 would have an estimated age-related maximum heart rate of 150.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maximum heart rate = 220 \u2013 age.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a target heart rate?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your target heart rate is the heart rate you are aiming for while exercising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For moderate to intense physical activity, your target heart rate should be between 64% and 76% of your maximum heart rate. For example, someone who is 30 has a maximum heart rate of approximately 190. Their target heart rate for moderate to intense physical activity would be between 122 beats per minute (bpm) and 144 bpm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Target heart rate for moderate to intense physical activity =<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">64% level: (maximum heart rate) x 0.64<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">76% level: (maximum heart rate) x 0.76<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For vigorous-intensity physical activity, aim for 77% to 93% of your maximum heart rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">77% level: (maximum heart rate) x 0.77<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">93% level: (maximum heart rate) x 0.93<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What drugs can increase heart rate?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medications can increase your heart rate:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cold medications that contain pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold medications such as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sudafed-pe-head-congestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed PE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sudafed-congestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed Congestion<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/over-the-counter-cold-and-flu-medicines-can-affect-your-heart-2019032016220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constrict or narrow blood vessels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can increase heart rate and blood pressure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Over-the-counter pain relievers:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen?q=Acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/motrin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil-dual-action\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aleve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naproxen-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naproxen sodium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can increase<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cause irregular heart rhythms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Asthma medications: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bronchodilators that are used for asthma and COPD such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ventolin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ventolin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (albuterol) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/atrovent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atrovent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ipratropium) can cause increased heart rate or palpitations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medications for ADHD:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Stimulants including<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ritalin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritalin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause a small increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Using ADHD medications may increase the risk of heart disease due to the effects of the medications on the heart and blood vessels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Some antidepressants:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs) including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cymbalta\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cymbalta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (duloxetine) may cause a fast or irregular heartbeat. Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/effexor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effexor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (venlafaxine) may increase blood pressure and heart rate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Thyroid medication:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The thyroid hormone <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/synthroid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synthroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (levothyroxine) may increase blood pressure or cause an irregular or fast heart rate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Some antibiotics:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zithromax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zithromax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (azithromycin) can disrupt the electrical activity of the heart, which can lead to arrhythmia (an irregular or abnormal heartbeat). Fluoroquinolones like Levaquin (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levofloxacin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cipro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cipro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ciprofloxacin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ciprofloxacin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can have similar effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Herbal supplements:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These products are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and do not undergo the same rigorous testing as traditional medications. Because they are natural, many people think they are harmless, but they can have serious side effects.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1755-5922.2010.00193.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herbal stimulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014including bitter orange, ephedra, caffeine, guarana, mat\u00e9, kola, areca, lobelia, and khat\u2014are the most common category of herbal products to affect the heart, but many other herbal remedies have also been linked to cardiovascular problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your healthcare provider if any of the medications or supplements you take could affect your heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our heart health newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Heart Health Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are drugs that increase heart rate dangerous?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn younger patients without any medical issues like heart disease or high blood pressure, mild elevations in heart rate related to medications would not likely cause any problems,\u201d<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drjefflandsman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Jeffrey Landsman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a primary care provider at Mercy Personal Physicians in Lutherville, Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn older patients or patients with significant underlying conditions, a rapid heartbeat may be a concern,\u201d Dr. Landsman adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some symptoms of a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/arrhythmia\/about-arrhythmia\/tachycardia--fast-heart-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dangerously high heart rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting (syncope)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightheadedness or dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid heartbeat or palpitations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluttering in the chest<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bounding pulse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pressure, tightness or pain (angina)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In extreme cases, a dangerously high heart rate can lead to unconsciousness or cardiac arrest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHeart rates that are too high may decrease your heart&#8217;s ability to effectively deliver blood and oxygen to the body,\u201d says Aaron Emmel, Pharm.D., founder of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacytechscholar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacy Tech Scholar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThey can also cause an irregular heart rhythm, which is a medical emergency. Shortness of breath, lightheadedness, palpitations, chest pain, or fainting would all be serious signs that warrant medical attention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it okay to exercise while taking medications that increase heart rate?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether or not it is safe to exercise while taking drugs that increase heart rate depends on a number of factors including a person\u2019s age, general health, and other medications the person may be taking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYounger, healthier adults may still be able to tolerate similar levels of exercise, whereas those with underlying conditions or older adults may need to modify their plan or exercise under close monitoring,\u201d Dr. Emmel says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When in doubt, it\u2019s best to consult with a healthcare provider before beginning an exercise program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients with underlying medical conditions should consult with their doctor prior to starting an exercising program,\u201d Dr. Landsman says. \u201cPatients who are started on a new medication that is elevating their heart rate should also consult with their doctor prior to exercising.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some precautions to take while exercising, especially for those at risk, may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limiting exercise intensity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wearing a medical grade heart-rate monitor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding exercise soon after taking any problematic medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/holiday-stress-management-without-smoking-drinking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding unnecessary substances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can raise heart rate, including caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is important to have a discussion about this with your provider,\u201d says Dr. Emmel. Because exercise is an important part of a heart healthy lifestyle, you need to ensure that you aren&#8217;t unnecessarily avoiding exercise that could be beneficial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The potential for increased heart rate does not necessarily mean a medication should not be taken or that exercise should be avoided. It\u2019s important to check with your healthcare provider before starting a medication that can increase your heart rate. You may also want to monitor your heart rate while starting a new exercise program, particularly if you have<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/signs-of-heart-problems\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underlying conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, hyperthyroidism,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-deal-with-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that could affect your heart rate.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You take medications to help maintain or improve your health.
