COVID-19 a respiratory infection that affects many different areas of the body. One of those is the cardiovascular system. There are two major concerns: how existing heart problems impact risk of infection or complications, and how the virus can damage your heart.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"risk-of-covid\">Do heart conditions increase risk of infection with COVID-19?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;People with pre-existing heart conditions, such as coronary artery disease or a rhythm disorder, are not at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/chronic-disease-and-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk for being infected by the coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that causes COVID-19,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.drwilliamli.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William W. Li, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President of The Angiogenesis Foundation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat to Beat Disease<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meaning, you\u2019re not more likely to catch COVID-19 just because you have a cardiac problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut if they become ill after infection, their heart condition may increase their risk of more serious complications from both diseases,&#8221; Dr. Li says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"severity\">Do people with heart conditions have a higher risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. If infected, those with pre-existing heart conditions\u2014including heart failure, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathies, and possibly high blood pressure\u2014have a higher risk for severe COVID-19 illness, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/need-extra-precautions\/people-with-medical-conditions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC). This affects your body in three main ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Decreased immune response: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The presence of an underlying heart condition decreases the body\u2019s ability to withstand the stress of an infection\u2014it&#8217;s a threat amplifier,&#8221; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharp.com\/san-diego-doctors\/dr-abisola-olulade-87348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abisola Olulade, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family medicine physician at Sharp Rees-Stealy Downtown in San Diego.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;People with heart conditions may have lower oxygen levels and weakened heart muscles. They may also have other comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), and obesity, which also increase the risk of severe complications and death from COVID-19.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Decreased circulation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The virus settles in the airways and infects the lungs, where it interferes with the main function of the lung: getting oxygen to the blood,&#8221; Dr. Li says. &#8220;When oxygen levels are lowered with infection, this can worsen the risk of complications for people with pre-existing heart conditions where lower oxygen in the body can put a stress on the heart.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Increased risk of lingering symptoms (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-sequelae\/\"><b>sequelae or \u201clong COVID\u201d<\/b><\/a><b>): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with underlying heart conditions &#8220;are also at risk of getting long-term post-acute COVID-19 symptoms,&#8221; according to Dr. Olulade. Basically, the co-existence of coronavirus and heart disease is potentially dangerous in the short and long term.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"heartattacks\">Does COVID-19 increase the risk of a heart attack?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risk of heart attack (myocardial infarction) increased by three to eight times and the risk of stroke caused by a blood clot increased three to six times in the week after a COVID-19 diagnosis, according to a study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/pdfs\/journals\/lancet\/PIIS0140-6736(21)01071-0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lancet<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study also showed that the risk for heart attack and stroke decreased over time, but over exactly what time course remains unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But vaccinations seem to provide a protective effect. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2794753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> full vaccination against COVID-19 is linked to a significant reduction in acute myocardial infarction and stroke in individuals who later became infected with COVID-19. That means getting vaccinated is particularly important among individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular risk factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"heart-inflammation\">How does COVID affect the heart?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason that patients with underlying heart conditions face serious illness when they contract COVID-19 is because the virus has a negative effect on even previously healthy patient&#8217;s hearts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamacardiology\/fullarticle\/2768914\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Cardiology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, found detectable virus in 24 of 39 hearts autopsied\u2014likely even in the hearts of patients who had not been diagnosed with cardiovascular problems before or while they had COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamacardiology\/fullarticle\/2768916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Cardiology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that, &#8220;Cardiac MRIs in 100 people who had recovered from COVID-19 within the past two to three months showed cardiac involvement in 78% of patients and ongoing heart muscle inflammation in 60% of patients,&#8221; explains Dr. Olulade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While more studies need to be done, it seems that COVID-19 can cause lasting heart inflammation and cardiovascular issues like arrhythmias in patients who might not have previously experienced any heart-related illness. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.122.060785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have also found that individuals who had COVID-19 were at an increased risk of blood clots for almost a year after infection, increasing their risk of heart attack and stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While much is still unknown about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/clinical-care\/post-covid-science.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term significance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of COVID-19 complications, it can cause inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis), according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/wr\/mm7035e5.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This may result in &#8220;the inability of the heart to pump oxygen to the rest of the body, and abnormality in heart muscle rhythm (arrhythmia),&#8221; according to Dr. Olulade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects\">Can the COVID vaccine damage the heart?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/safety\/myocarditis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some cases of myocarditis and pericarditis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after COVID-19 vaccination with mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer or Moderna), more often after the second shot, and within a week of vaccination. Reports of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the heart\u2019s outer lining) occur most often in adolescents and young males. Symptoms of these conditions include chest pain, shortness of breath, and a pounding or racing heart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, these cases respond well to treatment, and people are able to go back to their normal lives as symptoms improve. Treatment usually includes rest and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacc.org\/doi\/10.1016\/j.jacc.2022.02.003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like ACE inhibitors. The CDC still recommends that everyone eligible be vaccinated and boosted. The benefits outweigh the rare risk of heart problems post-vaccination.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you know if COVID-19 is affecting your heart?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the event of coronavirus heart damage, you may notice the following symptoms, according to Drs. Li, Siddiqui, and Olulade:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heart-palpitations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart palpitations (aka arrhythmia)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that feel like pounding, racing, or fluttering heartbeats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath, especially when lying flat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/chest-pain-causes-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling in the legs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluid retention in ankles<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These may be a result of myocarditis caused by previous COVID-19 infection, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pulse-oximeter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decreased oxygen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a current COVID-19 infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/living-with-pots\/\"><b>What it\u2019s like living with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, aka POTS<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prevention\">How to avoid heart problems after COVID<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/new-covid-strain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new variants are identified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it&#8217;s crucial that everyone continues to take care of their mental and physical health. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.heart.org\/news\/heart-disease-likely-to-remain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, quarantine behaviors such as unhealthy eating, inactivity, increased alcohol consumption, and avoiding doctor\u2019s offices are taking a toll on heart health that is likely to continue in upcoming years.\u00a0 If you have a history of heart problems, are at risk for cardiovascular disease, or live with a pre-existing heart condition, it&#8217;s even more important to take the following precautions during the pandemic to minimize cardiovascular risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li><b> Prevent infection:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wear a mask, social distance, and wash your hands thoroughly and regularly (use hand sanitizer if soap is not available). Disinfect high-traffic areas in your home regularly and stay up-to-date on your COVID-19 vaccines. Avoiding catching the virus is the best treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Don\u2019t wait to see your healthcare provider:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cA lot of patients have been scared to seek care of their ongoing conditions which can lead to harmful effects,&#8221; Dr. Olulade says. &#8220;Remember that in addition to wearing a mask, social distancing, and washing your hands, taking care of your existing health conditions is one of the best things that you can do for your health.&#8221; The same advice applies if you start developing symptoms. Putting off a visit increases risk of a more serious condition down the line.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Maintain a healthy lifestyle: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since COVID-19 started spreading across the U.S., alcohol consumption has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2770975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased 14%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Adults are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/covid.joinzoe.com\/us-post\/lockdown-snacking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">snacking 31%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more. At the same time physical activity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7559240\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decreased 32.3%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among those previously routinely active. On top of that, people are experiencing unprecedented levels of stress. All of those risk factors are bad for heart health\u2014and physicians worry it\u2019s increasing rates of heart disease. It\u2019s critical to stay active, eat a heart-healthy diet, and focus on mental health if you\u2019re at risk for, or already have a heart condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heart-healthy-diet\"><b>How to start (and stick to) a heart-healthy diet<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Manage your heart problems:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;Controlling your heart conditions increases the chances of surviving a coronavirus infection,\u201d Dr. Olulade advises. \u201cTake your medications as prescribed, maintain a healthy weight, exercise, and get lots of sleep. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-happens-when-you-stop-drinking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit alcohol intake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-happens-when-you-quit-smoking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid smoking and vaping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; You should also eat a heart-healthy diet full of plant-based whole foods, fiber, and seafood. Avoid processed foods and high-sugar foods. Try to consume things that are good for your immunity, vascular system, and heart health.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b> Get vaccinated: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t already received your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 vaccine series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, make an appointment to do so. In the meantime, make sure your other vaccinations are up-to-date, like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seasonal flu vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/shingrix-vaccine-shingles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shingles vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
