I had been on birth control for seven years, and I figured that I would stop taking it and then be able to get pregnant quickly. That was not the case. Seeing a negative pregnancy test time after time was hard. I soon went to my OB-GYN and was diagnosed with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-pcos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is PCOS?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/polycystic-ovary-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCOS<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a common reproductive problem caused by hormonal imbalance in which a women has an excess of estrogen which then becomes chemically converted to testosterone (an androgen). The excess estrogen may be from ovarian cysts or from adipose (fatty) tissue. The excess estrogen may prevent or impair fertility or the ability to get pregnant. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common signs of PCOS include irregular periods, acne, and excess body hair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosing PCOS<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosing PCOS is a bit tricky. There\u2019s not a single clinical test that can confirm if you have it. Evaluation includes a comprehensive personal and family medical history and physical examination, including a pelvic exam,\u00a0 blood tests, or sometimes an ultrasound. For me, the main signs were ovaries that appeared polycystic on my ultrasound, abnormal menstrual cycles, and higher-than-normal testosterone levels. In other words, my missed periods indicated PCOS, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pregnancy. People with PCOS usually have some combination of these symptoms, often along with excess body hair and weight gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes PCOS?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can be frustrating is that there is not an identified cause of the syndrome. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears that PCOS is a polygenetic, multifactorial disorder&#8230;but the exact genetic profile has not yet been identified,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinfertility.com\/who-we-are\/our-team\/dr-elizabeth-pritts-m-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elizabeth Pritts, MD, of the Wisconsin Fertility Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both insulin-resistance and inflammation appear to play a larger role in the disease than earlier understood. Women with PCOS have an increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and hepatic disease because of this.\u201d Being overweight is associated with PCOS. When you\u2019re diagnosed with PCOS, your healthcare provider will often screen for these conditions since they so commonly occur together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating PCOS<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is essential to note that PCOS is a syndrome and not a disease, explains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/afamd.com\/santa-rosa\/our-staff\/dr-jennifer-ratcliffe-md-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Radcliffe, MD, Ph.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of Advanced Fertility Associates Medical Group Inc. Meaning, there is no cure for PCOS. While it is manageable, it never really goes away like a disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I felt like my body had betrayed me, but my healthcare provider assured me that there were options. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is no cure, those living with polycystic ovary syndrome can lead healthy lives by managing the symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diet and exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most women with PCOS have insulin-resistance to some degree,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Dr. Pritts.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diets that stabilize your insulin levels\u2014with lots of whole foods and minimal sugar\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will help symptoms the most.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This concept is a constant battle for me because I\u2019m a bit of a sugar-addict, even though I know I feel best when my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-blood-glucose-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is even-keel. According to Dr. Radcliffe, walking or other exercises can help lower insulin levels and blood pressure as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My doctor also prescribed me <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/metformin-for-pcos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and advised me to lose weight. Metformin is primarily used to treat diabetes but can be used to help regulate metabolic issues and assist with weight loss for people with PCOS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost PCOS patients have a \u2018metabolic\u2019 imbalance and don\u2019t use food\/calories the same way as others,\u201d Dr. Radcliffe explains. \u201cThey benefit most from a low carbohydrate diet or any strict diet intervention and weight loss. The diabetes drug, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can help with this but has side effects if the proper diet isn\u2019t maintained.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I experienced this first hand when taking the medication. My stomach would become upset if I ate something unhealthy. It encouraged me to eat nutritious foods that didn\u2019t lead to a stomachache. Losing weight gave me the confidence to take additional steps that could help me conceive.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAfter managing my weight, my doctor prescribed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/letrozole\">letrozole<\/a>, which is usually a breast cancer medication. Letrozole converts androgens (such as testosterone) to estrogens. It can also encourage ovulation, which happened for me. Within just a few months of treatment, my husband and I were ecstatic to find out I was pregnant with our daughter! (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clomiphene-citrate\">Clomid<\/a> can also be used to stimulate ovulation.)<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living with PCOS<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether or not you are trying to conceive, managing PCOS is an ongoing battle. It still affects my daily life. My cycles are irregular, and I have a hard time losing weight. The good news is that with support and knowledge from medical professionals, you can find the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pcos-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that works best for you and your body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that I better understand my symptoms (and what helps keep them in check), I\u2019m excited about the future\u2014to follow the diet and exercise regimen that help my PCOS.
