This slows your heartbeat, decreases blood pressure, and opens blood vessels to improve blood flow. These medications can treat high blood pressure (hypertension), irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmia), chest pains, heart<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">failure, migraines, and heart attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For patients with heart failure, \u201cbeta blockers typically work [to reduce stress on the heart] by reducing a patient\u2019s heart rate,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/npidb.org\/doctors\/pharmacy\/pharmacist_183500000x\/1205166618.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dawn Shill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., a pharmacist for the Veteran\u2019s Affairs Healthcare System in Anchorage, Alaska.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta blockers help to improve the balance of myocardial supply and demand. Dr. Shill says, \u201cBasically, sometimes heart failure is ischemic.\u201d Meaning, there is weakened muscular tissue in the heart that leads to a decreased amount of blood pumped from the heart. Beta blockers can help improve function in certain areas of the heart by reducing the amount of oxygen supply needed for the heart to function at an optimal level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3997042\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also shows that beta blockers reduce the release of norepinephrine. Along with epinephrine, norepinephrine normally binds to receptors throughout the body and is involved with blood pressure and heart rate. Your doctor will also consider any previous treatments you have tried and any side effects you have experienced before. For example, bisoprolol works as well as other beta blockers for heart failure, but it may cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5369873\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less fatigue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than non-selective beta blockers like carvedilol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-and-how-beta-blockers-are-prescribed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When (and how) beta blockers are prescribed<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta blockers do not strengthen the heart, they simply stop the nervous system from overstimulating it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis prevents the heart muscle from overworking itself to hypertrophy due to excessive strain, which can lead to cardiomyopathy,\u201d Dr. Reed explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While beta blockers can reduce damage to the heart by taking the strain off, Dr. Shill explains that if taken incorrectly they could actually weaken the heart. When not taken as prescribed, they can do more harm than good. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta blockers can cause a dangerously low heart rate called bradycardia which can lead to low blood pressure. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can cause symptoms like dizziness, nausea, fainting, lack of concentration, or blurred vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So long as a patient is stable and the right beta blocker is prescribed in the right dose, beta blockers can be successfully used to treat heart failure. \u201cThe sympathetic nervous system is overacting and putting strain on the heart and that is why beta blockers will be initiated and then continued,\u201d Dr. Reed says. \u201cAfter a bout of acute heart failure, most patients will continue beta blocker therapy. Beta blockers have been shown to reduce mortality, and there is strong evidence supporting their use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients may be prescribed a low dose of beta blocker for heart failure to begin with. They can then monitor for any side effects under the supervision of a doctor for a week or two. As long as the medication is tolerated well, a healthcare provider can gradually increase the dose until symptoms are relieved, according to Dr. Reed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-use-beta-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use beta blockers?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While beta blockers can be life-saving for some patients, that isn\u2019t the case for everyone. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a patient is experiencing<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/congestive-heart-failure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">congestive heart failure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along with other comorbid conditions like COPD, diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, beta blockers may not be the right course of treatment. \u201cBeta blockers should be avoided by patients who have asthma and COPD,\u201d Dr. Reed says. \u201cThey are also not a good idea for patients with a slow heart rate or low blood pressure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like all medications, beta blockers can have side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postural hypotension is a problematic side effect for many people with beta blockers,\u201d Dr. Reed explains. This can cause dizziness or fainting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some beta blockers can also cause side effects such as depression, fatigue, and erectile dysfunction, which can be a few of the most problematic side effects of these medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there are potential drug interactions to consider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSome of the most commonly used drugs that interact with beta blockers include NSAIDs and anti-ulcer medications,\u201d Dr. Reed says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to NSAIDs and anti-ulcer medications, there is a long list of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8652080\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possible interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be aware of.
