When we think of Valentine\u2019s Day, we think of romance, not heart-health, but the two are not mutually exclusive. There are plenty of ways to have a romantic, fun, and heart-healthy Valentine\u2019s Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"celebrate-with-heart-healthy-valentine-s-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrate with heart-healthy Valentine\u2019s foods<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best ways to protect your heart is by eating plenty of heart-healthy foods and avoiding over-consuming options that are less healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart-healthy foods come from a wide-variety of sources. \u201cA number of foods types\u2014whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts\u2014have been linked to lower risk of heart disease, so a healthy diet should include these types of foods regularly, preferably daily,\u201d says Glenn Gaesser, Ph.D., professor in the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn recent history, fats have received a bad reputation, but we now know that omega-3 fatty acids are considered to be cardioprotective, while trans fats contribute to coronary artery disease,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/somamandal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soma Mandal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, board-certified internist at Summit Medical Group in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. \u201cI strongly recommend eating one or two servings of fatty fish during the week.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating for heart-health also means<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/nutrition-basics\/aha-diet-and-lifestyle-recommendations\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limiting foods that are not heart-friendly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saturated fat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trans fats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lots of added sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High sodium<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Processed meats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol in excess (more than one drink per day)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are lots of ways to incorporate heart-healthy foods into your Valentine\u2019s Day celebrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-surprise-your-sweetheart-or-treat-yourself-with-a-heart-healthy-breakfast-in-bed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. People with heart disease or at risk of developing heart disease often worry that having sex could put a dangerous strain on their heart.
