People with asthma are at higher risk for severe illness if they catch the novel coronavirus, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/need-extra-precautions\/people-with-medical-conditions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC), for many of the same reasons other respiratory illnesses exacerbate symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the symptoms of a viral-induced asthma flare?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAn asthma flare-up is bronchospasm and inflammation of the lungs,\u201d says Pierrette Mimi Poinsett, MD, a medical consultant at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/momlovesbest.com\/author\/pierrette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mom Loves Best<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cRespiratory infections including viruses can trigger asthma flares.\u201d The symptoms of a viral-induced asthma flare-up are similar to regular asthma symptoms, and can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest tightness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinus pain<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a good sign that it\u2019s viral-related if your asthma is typically well-controlled, and these signs appear alongside a viral illness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma symptoms occur on a spectrum from mild to severe. A serious asthma attack can be life-threatening, so it\u2019s important to recognize the symptoms. If you develop signs such as difficulty breathing, flaring of the nostrils, difficulty talking or walking, and\/or bluish tint to lips, skin, or nails, call 911 and seek medical help immediately.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes asthma worse? In addition to viral illness, some other common<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/asthma-attack-triggers\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triggers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of an asthma flare-up are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritants in the air like smoke<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weather\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cold-induced-asthma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cold temperatures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or allergy season<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications like beta-blockers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroesophageal reflux<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When an asthma flare-up occurs, it could take several days or weeks before your bronchial tubes are no longer constricted, depending on how severe the condition is.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What helps asthma when you are sick?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no treatments specifically for viral-induced asthma symptoms, but there are a number of treatments that can alleviate cough, chest tightness, and wheezing. The best way to manage asthma is prevention and long-term control that stops attacks before they happen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, develop an asthma action plan with your healthcare provider before you get sick. This is a very specific document that is based on your numbers when you breath into a peak flow meter and symptoms. There are three zones: green, yellow, and red.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Green zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the level where you do not have symptoms and your peak flow is at its highest (peak flows are monitored over two to three weeks to determine personal best peak flow). Peak flows are measured daily to monitor your current zone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Yellow zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is notable for decreased peak flow and the onset of symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Red zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is notable for severely decreased peak flow and severe symptoms. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an emergency zone that indicates the need to contact your healthcare provider or go for emergency care.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each zone should have corresponding medications that are recommended to help control your asthma. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrequently being in the yellow or red zone is a sign of severe asthma,\u201d Dr. Poinsett says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the types of asthma medications that help when you\u2019re sick?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAsthma medications are divided into two major classes: long-term control medications and quick-relief medications,\u201d says Dr. Poinsett.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/asthma-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Long-term control medications<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also known as anti-inflammatory, controller, or maintenance medications. These medications reduce the swelling in the lung and mucus production. Long-term control medications are taken regularly\u2014even without symptoms\u2014for optimal effect. These can include inhaled corticosteroids, oral medications, and combination inhalers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Quick-relief medications <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are also known as rescue medications and are used to treat acute symptoms of asthma when you are in the yellow or red zone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Your action plan when sick may be a combination of the two.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For example, your healthcare provider may recommend you start using a steroid inhaler at the first signs of a viral illness to prevent a flare. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMedications like<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/albuterol-sulfate-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">albuterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relax the muscle spasm and lead to better air entry to the deep parts of the lungs,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/acaciamed.org\/who\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sumana Reddy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD at Acacia Family Medical Group in Prunedale, California. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short-acting rescue inhalers like these can help when your asthma acts up when you are sick\u2014and you may need to use them more frequently than usual.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider may recommend a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nebulizer-pediatric-mask\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nebulizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is medicine given through a mask to help get medication to your lungs while you are sick. If illness makes your asthma flare, that can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washing hands often<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wearing a mask when you are near people who may be sick<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet from sick people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting a flu shot annually to prevent illness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting additional treatment measures at the first sign of illness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should discuss with your healthcare provider if your asthma is getting worse beyond when you\u2019re sick since you may require an adjustment in your medication.
