There are three <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uptodate.com\/contents\/acute-complicated-urinary-tract-infection-including-pyelonephritis-in-adults\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">types of UTIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014urethritis (inflammation of the urethra), cystitis (bladder infection\/lower UTI), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/kidney-infection-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pyelonephritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (kidney infection\/upper UTI). UTIs can cause cystitis, but not all cystitis is caused by UTIs. The two conditions are very similar and share many symptoms. Cystitis can be acute or interstitial. Acute cystitis occurs suddenly and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24450-acute-cystitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usually due to an infection of the bladder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whereas interstitial cystitis is a long-term condition affecting several layers of bladder tissue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UTI<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary tract infections are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/uti-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caused when microorganisms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enter the urethra, infecting any part of the urinary system: the urethra, ureters, bladder, or kidneys. Ninety percent of uncomplicated UTIs are caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli), a bacterium found in the digestive system, but other microorganisms can cause UTIs &#8211; particularly when anatomic anomalies are present or prosthetic materials, such as urinary catheters. Typically, UTIs occur in the urethra (urethritis) and bladder (cystitis), but bacteria sometimes travel to and infect the kidneys (pyelonephritis), making prompt treatment important. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), women are much more likely to get cystitis than men.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UTI<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6502976\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% to 60%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women will experience at least one UTI during their lifetime. UTIs can also recur. More than a quarter of women experience a recurrent UTI within six months of their first episode. And the prevalence of UTIs increases with age. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diagnostics\/16553-cystoscopy\/test-details\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cystoscopy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a procedure using a thin tube with a camera to examine the urinary tract) or imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, CT, or MRI) may be conducted by a urologist to identify possible causes of bladder inflammation and bladder pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UTI<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider will ask about symptoms, conduct a physical examination, and order a simple urinalysis to look for white blood cells (pus), red blood cells (blood), and bacteria in your urine sample. The presence of these cells indicates an infection. Bacteria from a urine sample are typically grown in a lab to identify the source of the UTI and determine the best course of treatment. It can be helpful to increase your intake of vitamin C and probiotics in order to support the immune system and urinary tract health. Pay close attention to symptoms, as severe bacterial infections of the bladder or kidneys may need to be treated with intravenous antibiotics in a hospital. Because most UTIs are caused by bacterial pathogens, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ciprofloxacin-for-uti\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are usually warranted to eradicate the infection.
