They can even be the racing, sweaty feeling you have after taking a dose of Sudafed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes heart palpitations? There are many things that bring them about. Here\u2019s how to know when that feeling is benign, or a sign of something more serious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-heart-palpitations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are heart palpitations?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palpitations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describe a commonly felt sensation that your heart is fluttering, pounding, flip-flopping, racing, or skipping a beat. They generally describe a situation when your awareness of your own heartbeat is heightened for one reason or another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While heart palpitations can be unsettling, when they occur infrequently, they are not usually a sign of heart disease. \u201cAlmost everyone feels them from time to time,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leonardpiankomd.com\/\">Leonard Pianko<\/a>, MD, cardiologist at<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aventura Cardiovascular Center<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMost of the time, heart palpitations are benign.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, \u201cthey\u2019re pretty common among all age groups,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bswhealth.com\/physician\/fahmi-farah\">Fahmi Farah<\/a>, MD, cardiologist at<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baylor Scott &amp; White Health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Bentley Heart. \u201cA lot of people in their 20s, all the way to people of more advanced age, like 65 and up, can all get palpitations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-heart-palpitations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes heart palpitations?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart palpitations have many potential causes. Below are some of the common, mostly harmless explanations for heart palpitations:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Emotions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Phrases like \u201cdied of a broken heart\u201d and \u201cscared to death\u201d aren\u2019t purely colloquial.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3196868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have tied anxiety, stress, panic attacks, and other strong emotional experiences to irregular heart rhythm, such as palpitations. When you feel a strong emotion, your body releases hormones that affect your heartbeat.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uihc.org\/health-topics\/heart-palpitations-frequently-asked-questions\"><b>Vigorous activity<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When you exercise, your heart rate and cardiac output (the amount of blood circulating in your body each minute) increase significantly. That can cause palpitations in otherwise healthy people\u2014especially if you haven\u2019t worked out in a long time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hormone changes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Varying hormone levels during menstruation, pregnancy, and just prior to menopause can trigger heart abnormalities. Overactive thyroid disorders, such as Graves\u2019 disease or a toxic thyroid nodule, can lead to palpitations. A rare adrenal disease called pheochromocytoma increases stress hormones, which results in palpitations and chest pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stimulants:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nicotine, cocaine, amphetamines, and other stimulants can all cause changes in heart rate. The degree of impact varies from person to person. While many heart palpitations have historically been attributed to caffeine, a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/jaha.115.002503\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of the American Heart Association<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> debunks this connection. In healthy individuals, even excess caffeine is unlikely to cause significant changes in heart rhythm.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Low blood pressure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fluctuations in blood pressure can happen for many reasons, such as changes in body position or diet. When your blood pressure drops down, one of the ways your heart compensates is by increasing heart rate to help keep blood flow stable throughout the body. This rise in beats can cause a heart flutter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medications:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17084-heart-palpitations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to treat asthma, high blood pressure, and even over-the-counter decongestants can cause heart palpitations depending on the person.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Low blood sugar: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re very hungry, you may start to feel weak, sweaty, or like your heart is racing. This type of palpitation is triggered by adrenaline, a hormone your body releases to prepare for a food shortage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fever:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When your body temperature is high, you are using energy faster than normal. But, there are instances when that fluttering feeling is a sign of something more serious. They can be caused by cardiac arrhythmia\u2014a group of heart conditions that make the heart beat too slowly or too quickly. To determine the cause of your heart flutters, your healthcare provider may refer you to a cardiologist for additional tests, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Echocardiogram<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see if the heart walls and valves are working as they should be<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stress test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see how heart function and breathing are impacted by exertion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Electrocardiogram<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ECG or EKG) to identify abnormal heart rhythms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>A Holter monitor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a portable ECG device that continuously records heart rhythms for 24 to 48 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure to seek medical attention or call 911 if you\u2019re experiencing any of the following symptoms in addition to palpitations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain\/tightness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness or lightheadedness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of consciousness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These may be signs of cardiac arrest, which can be life-threatening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cardiac-arrest-vs-heart-attack\/\"><b>Cardiac arrest vs. heart attack: Which is worse?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-stop-health-palpitations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to stop health palpitations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before discussing treatment, your healthcare provider will need to know your history: how long you have had palpitations, how long they last, whether there are certain movements or circumstances that cause them\u2014along with any underlying health conditions. \u201cPalpitations may signify something different in someone with anemia versus someone with underlying lung disease versus someone with structural heart disease or heart failure,&#8221; says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/weillcornell.org\/nupoor-narula-md\">Nupoor Narula<\/a>, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, assistant professor of medicine in cardiology at Weill Cornell Medical College.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For milder cases of heart fluttering, lifestyle adjustments help to decrease the frequency, or help to slow a racing heartbeat. For more severe, frequent palpitations medication or a surgical procedure may be required.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lifestyle-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by taking note of what triggers your heart palpitations. Then, take steps to reduce your exposure to that stimulus. Some of these techniques include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Practice yoga or meditation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One of the most common sources of heart palpitations is anxiety. Yoga and meditation can help manage stress, which may alleviate heart fluttering.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Learn deep breathing techniques:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Breathing rate and heart rate are often tied together. Using box breathing (four seconds breathing in, four seconds holding, four seconds breathing out, four seconds holding) can regulate breath and heart rate, reducing palpitations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limit caffeine intake:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While caffeine may not universally cause heart fluttering, each person has varying sensitivities. It may be helpful to minimize your coffee consumption while trying to stop heart fluttering.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Quit smoking:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Stopping smoking reduces your nicotine exposure, a substance that can trigger heart palpitations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eat regularly:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Following a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heart-healthy-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and consuming regular meals can stop spikes and drops in your blood sugar that could cause heart palpitations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If alcohol or an over-the-counter medication triggers your palpitations, work with your healthcare provider to make a plan to avoid that substance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In instances where lifestyle changes are not enough, two types of medications are often used for heart palpitations: beta blockers and centrally acting calcium-channel blockers. Both help to slow and regulate your heartbeat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an underlying condition is causing your heart palpitations, the treatment will involve treating that condition. For example, you may be prescribed Ativan to help manage anxiety. Procedures such as a catheter ablation, pacemaker, or implantable defibrillator may be needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all heart palpitations have an exact cause, and many do not require medical treatment. Though they can feel stressful, let your healthcare provider reassure you that what you\u2019re experiencing is most likely not dangerous.
