Some medications\u2014both over-the-counter and prescription\u2014lose their potency when they stay on the shelf too long but some can become dangerous and even toxic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A drug\u2019s expiration date is when its active ingredients are no longer at full potency, as determined by the drug manufacturer. In addition to not working, some medications are also unsafe when they are past their expiration date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-it-safe-to-take-expired-medicine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to take expired medicine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no specific time period past an expiration date that a medication can be guaranteed safe and effective. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assuming risk when you take expired drugs comes down to how dangerous it is to take that particular medication and how badly you need it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost medications are not toxic after they expire,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christina M. Madison, Pharm.D., the founder of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thepublichealthpharmacist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Public Health Pharmacist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, there are several drawbacks to popping those pills past the \u201cuse by\u201d date:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medication will begin to lose efficacy, potency, or may not work as directed.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is problematic or dangerous if you\u2019re taking it to manage a serious condition, such as taking aspirin to manage a heart problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Side effects may worsen.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Meaning, any adverse event you may already experience could be magnified once an Rx is expired.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Expired medications can be at risk for bacterial contamination. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s best not to add a new illness because of bacterial growth in your old meds. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo be safe, only use medications that are not expired,\u201d says Kelly Johnson-Arbor, MD, medical toxicologist and medical director at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poison.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Capital Poison Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can at all help it, do not use expired medicines. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if it\u2019s a life-saving treatment\u2014such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nitroglycerin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nitroglycerin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/albuterol-sulfate-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">albuterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014it might still work if you don\u2019t have any other options. It\u2019s best to stay on top of refills to make sure you don\u2019t have to use old prescriptions, but you can call your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you are in a pinch and need advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"which-medications-are-unsafe-after-their-expiration-date\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which medications are unsafe after their expiration date?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some medications that should not be used after their expiration date. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, certain antibiotics should never be taken after their expiration date. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, you should rarely have expired antibiotics as a full course should be completed when prescribed. Stopping your antibiotics before finishing the recommended course can contribute to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/antibiotic-stewardship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotic resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/is-it-ok-to-use-medications-past-their-expiration-dates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were studied and found unstable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014showing signs of physical decay and lost potency\u2014after their expiration date include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liquid antibiotics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitroglycerin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/drug-expiration-dates-do-they-mean-anything\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tetracycline<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mefloquine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EpiPens<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these cases, context matters. Meaning, if you need nitroglycerin for a dangerous heart problem, or if<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you have life-threatening allergies, \u201cuse of expired allergy medication may result in inadequate control of allergy symptoms,\u201d says Dr. Johnson-Arbor. Make sure you are well-stocked with up-to-date prescription medications if you have a serious health condition where full efficacy of your drugs <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> matters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional extenuating circumstances may arise in which the expiration dates of life-saving medications may be reconsidered. In 2021 when a severe shortage of EpiPens occurred, the drug company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/important-update-epipenr-epinephrine-injection-usp-03-mg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pfizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coordinated with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to extend expiration dates as a management strategy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was done after a detailed review of stability data, and applied only to certain lots this medication indicated for severe allergic reactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"which-medications-are-likely-safe-after-their-expiration-date\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which medications are likely safe after their expiration date?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo medications should \u2018technically\u2019 be used beyond their expiration date, but there are some instances that expiration dates could be extended in response to a drug shortage,\u201d says Dr. Madison. In these instances, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/mcm-legal-regulatory-and-policy-framework\/expiration-dating-extension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will indicate if a drug is deemed safe after the \u201cuse by\u201d date on the package. Similar to what happened with EpiPens, additional examples include COVID-19 vaccines, COVID-19 therapeutics, and antiviral medications used to treat the flu, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tamiflu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamiflu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0731708518328887\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has found that many medications retain their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/1377417\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full potency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even many years after the expiration date. Some examples of these drugs that may lose some efficacy, but are most likely safe and effective include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen-extra-strength\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription painkillers, such as hydrocodone, codeine, and butalbital<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sedatives, such as methaqualone and pentobarbital<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may be more medications that are safe long after their expiration date. Yet, most of the research done is dedicated to prescription drugs used by the military or in government stockpiles, rather than the meds most commonly found in your medicine cabinet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To maximize the safety and effectiveness of all your medications, make sure to store them in a cool, dry place, and keep them in the original containers. They are designed to protect them against sun and moisture damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-should-you-do-with-expired-medicine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should you do with expired medicine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/counseling-patients-on-medication-disposal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proper disposal of expired and unused medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is very important to prevent accidental poisoning, as well as preventing damage to the environment.
