People who are plagued by seasonal\u2014or even year-round\u2014allergies, take regular<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-seasonal-allergy-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and are still not getting relief may want to look into allergen immunotherapy, better known as allergy shots. Do allergy shots work? Are allergy shots worth it? Hold on to your tissues and keep reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are allergy shots?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 400 million people live with allergic rhinitis across the globe according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldallergy.org\/education-and-programs\/education\/allergic-disease-resource-center\/professionals\/in-depth-review-of-allergic-rhinitis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Allergy Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When they\u2019re exposed to pollen, mold, grasses, dust, dust mites, pet dander, and numerous other common allergens, they experience symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, congestion, watery eyes, headache, cough, throat irritation, and itchy mouth, throat, or skin. Allergies can make people downright miserable especially if they\u2019re frequent.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/conditions-and-treatments\/library\/allergy-library\/allergy-shots-(immunotherapy)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defines allergy shots as a long-term treatment that can decrease symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever), allergic asthma, conjunctivitis (eye allergies), and stinging insect allergy. With regular long-term injections of a little bit of allergen (the things people are allergic to), shots decrease sensitivity over time and reduce or eliminate symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/promethazine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promethazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diphenhydramine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diphenhydramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the active ingredient in Benadryl), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydroxyzine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydroxyzine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are some examples of allergy shots.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should consider allergy shots?<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three groups of people who are good candidates for allergy shots, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nyallergy.com\/new-york-allergists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sima Patel, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an allergist at New York Allergy and Sinus Center in New York City:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>People affected year-round<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or in two or more seasons<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>People who don\u2019t experience relief from other treatments.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIf<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/allergy-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aren\u2019t working, that may be an indication for people to start treatment with shots,\u201d Dr. Patel explains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>People who want permanent relief, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for example, if you\u2019re allergic to a pet<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy medications can\u2019t cure the reaction, whereas allergen immunotherapy can.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Dr. Patel says that depending on the study you reference, allergy shots can be effective in improving symptoms for up to 85% of patients.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do allergy shots work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy shots are a prescription treatment administered by an allergist or immunologist in the office. They\u2019re usually covered by most insurances though a copay may be required for each office visit. In the long run, the cost of injections may be less than taking a daily medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on how many allergies someone has, they may require one to four shots per week depending on how many allergens can fit in each vial. \u201cThey\u2019re \u2018baby shots,\u2019 not the same shot as a vaccine since it\u2019s a very small needle\u2014it feels like a little pinch,\u201d Dr. Patel says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If people have a lot of allergens\u2014pollen, dust, animal dander, mold, and others\u2014they\u2019re probably looking at four different vials (shots). For those that just have a dust allergy or an animal allergy, only one vial is necessary. There are two phases to treatment:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Build-up phase:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Patients get their shots weekly at the doctor\u2019s office during the build-up phase. During this period, the dose is slowly increased over three to six months.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Maintenance phase:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The maintenance phase involves getting allergy shots less frequently, once or twice per month.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once someone receives their weekly shot they must remain in the doctor\u2019s office for 30 minutes to make sure they don\u2019t have a serious reaction called anaphylaxis. This can involve swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, or lowered blood pressure\u2014and it can be life-threatening. Though it\u2019s rare, anaphylaxis can happen whether it\u2019s a first allergy shot or the 100th injection. Waiting a half hour is a must after every injection. Mild side effects are also possible, like injection site soreness or allergy symptoms. After all, the shot contains the very allergens someone is allergic to.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there any alternatives?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy tablets or drops called sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) are another, newer form of immunotherapy and involve placing a tablet or liquid drop with the specific allergen under someone\u2019s tongue. These are just as effective as shots and can even be taken at home once you receive them from your allergist. They are a great option if you are afraid of needles, or can\u2019t make it to weekly appointments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, each tablet or drop only provides one allergen. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is not available for prevention of tree pollen allergies, but it is a treatment option that is available for grass, ragweed, and dust mite allergies,\u201d says Dr. Gupta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some SLIT brand names include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/odactra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Odactra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/grastek\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grastek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oralair\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oralair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ragwitek\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ragwitek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are allergy shots worth it?<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people are hesitant to start allergy shots because they require a time commitment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy shots are given over three to five years and can subdue your allergies for several years after finishing treatment, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entandallergy.com\/doctor\/www-entandallergy-com-rgupta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ratika Gupta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an allergist at ENT and Allergy Associates in Brooklyn, New York. \u201cHowever, symptoms can return over time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergists decide when patients can stop the shots based on their symptoms. At year three if someone has been receiving shots regularly without missing doses and they no longer have symptoms, they can stop. But typically, people still have some mild symptoms, so they\u2019ll need to continue for the full five years. Yes, that\u2019s long but the pay-off can be life-changing for some.
