It\u2019s also approved to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/jardiance-and-kidney-problems\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the risk of further worsening of kidney disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adults with chronic kidney disease. It is part of a class of drugs called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sglt2-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SGLT2 inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which work by increasing the kidneys&#8217; ability to remove glucose from the blood into the urine. Ketoacidosis is a potentially life-threatening medical emergency and is marked by symptoms such as intense thirst, frequent urination, nausea, abdominal pain, weakness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Because of the increased risk for ketoacidosis or low blood sugar, both ketone and glucose levels should be checked regularly when Jardiance is being taken.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jardiance-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance weight loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to controlling blood sugar levels, Jardiance has been shown to reduce both weight and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4768401\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distribution of body fat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In particular, Jardiance significantly reduces abdominal fat (visceral adipose tissue or VAT). Abdominal body fat raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events. Any reduction in belly fat helps reduce the risk of dying from heart disease or other cardiovascular conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jardiance-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance does not affect the nervous system. However, when taken with other diabetes medications, Jardiance can cause blood sugar to fall to dangerously low levels. This is called hypoglycemia, and it causes the body to release epinephrine, better known as adrenaline. Many of the symptoms of low blood sugar are caused by this adrenaline rush: anxiety, fast heartbeat, palpitations, jitteriness, sweating, tremors, and nervousness. If taking Jardiance causes anxiety or any other symptoms of low blood sugar, take a fast-acting source of sugar, such as fruit juice, and seek immediate medical attention. Your healthcare provider may prescribe an emergency glucagon kit if low blood sugar is a common occurrence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jardiance-infections\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance infections<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, patients with diabetes are more vulnerable to bacterial and fungal infections. This is because bacteria and fungi consume glucose for energy. High blood glucose increases their food supply. High blood sugar also decreases the ability of the immune system to fight off infections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance decreases blood glucose levels by filtering glucose out of the bloodstream into the urine. This lowers blood sugar, which is a good thing, but makes urine sugary. Bacteria, yeast, and mold in the urinary tract and genitals thrive in this sugary environment. As a consequence, kidney, urinary tract, and genital infections are common side effects of Jardiance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rare cases, bacterial infections caused by Jardiance can run out of control and cause serious illnesses such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urosepsis (a bacterial overload in the urinary tract)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pyelonephritis (severe kidney infection)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fournier\u2019s gangrene<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"jardiance-side-effects-in-males\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance side effects in males<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The side effects of Jardiance in males are generally similar to its side effects in females, but men are susceptible to penile yeast infections and a rare but serious infection called Fournier&#8217;s gangrene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2585703\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fournier\u2019s gangrene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> results when a bacterial infection explodes out of control and starts attacking and killing tissues in the skin around the genitals and anus. It commonly affects men, but can also occur in women and children. Because it is a potentially life-threatening condition if left untreated, you should seek immediate medical attention if you\u2019re taking Jardiance and notice symptoms of Fournier\u2019s gangrene, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling sick<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate to severe swelling and pain in the genitals or around the anus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foul smell in the affected area<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crackling, crunching, or popping sounds when you rub the area<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of Fournier\u2019s gangrene can begin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK532925\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within the first week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of taking Jardiance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men may also experience a yeast infection of the skin around the penis, with symptoms that may include redness, itching, or swelling of the penis, foul-smelling discharge, rash, and pain.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jardiance-side-effects-in-females\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance side effects in females<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common side effects of Jardiance in females include genital yeast infections and urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are more frequent in women than in men. Jardiance typically clears from the body within a few days. Its half-life is 12 hrs, so most of the drug is cleared within 24 hours. Still, it takes several days for it to fully clear the body, so any minor side effects, such as increased urination, should fade within a day or two after the drug is discontinued. However, infections, liver abnormalities, and kidney injury may take days or weeks to resolve.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jardiance-contraindications-and-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance contraindications and warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance is not the right medication for everyone. Because it works by increasing the kidney\u2019s filtration of blood sugar, it is not appropriate for patients with severe or end-stage kidney disease or who are on dialysis. It should also not be given to anyone with a known hypersensitivity to empagliflozin, the active ingredient in Jardiance. In addition, people with diabetic ketoacidosis are not good candidates for Jardiance therapy. Jardiance is not for use in patients with Type 1 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance comes with several warnings, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The potential to cause low blood pressure in older adults and in patients with renal impairment, low blood pressure, or who are taking diuretics (water pills)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The need to monitor patients for signs of:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ketoacidosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney impairment or injury<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe urinary infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fournier\u2019s gangrene\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fungal infections of the genitals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood sugar and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increase in \u201cbad\u201d cholesterol (LDL) levels<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA has not approved Jardiance for use in children younger than 18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, Jardiance is discouraged for use by pregnant women in any trimester, but is contraindicated in their second and third trimesters. However, there is little research linking Jardiance use during pregnancy to birth defects or miscarriage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are no studies showing how much Jardiance is present in breast milk, Jardiance should not be taken by nursing mothers. There is a possibility that even small amounts may impair the development of the nursing infant\u2019s kidneys.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jardiance-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance has clinically significant interactions with several drugs. Many impair the ability of the body to eliminate Jardiance. These drugs increase the therapeutic benefit of Jardiance but also increase the risk and severity of side effects. Some drugs, such as diuretics, insulin, and drugs similar to Jardiance, should be avoided when taking Jardiance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sglt2-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SGLT2 inhibitors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance belongs to a family of drugs called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. These drugs work by shutting down a mechanism in the kidneys that returns glucose from the urine back into the bloodstream. As a result, patients on Jardiance excrete anywhere from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK532925\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">64 to 78 grams more of glucose a day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depending on the dose prescribed. To avoid a hazardous drop in blood sugar, Jardiance should never be taken with other SGLT2 inhibitors:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farxiga (dapagliflozin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invokana (canagliflozin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steglatro (ertugliflozin)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuretics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuretics (water pills) increase the amount of water and electrolytes excreted in the urine. They are commonly prescribed for a variety of medical conditions, most commonly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blood-pressure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and swelling due to water retention. Jardiance can interact with diuretics and cause higher-than-normal urination, resulting in dehydration and low blood volume, which can lead to low blood pressure. A healthcare provider might have to choose alternative therapies, reduce the diuretic dose, or monitor the patient closely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"insulin-and-insulin-stimulating-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin and insulin-stimulating medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin and drugs that increase the body\u2019s production of insulin (insulin secretagogues) increase the risk of low blood sugar when they\u2019re taken with Jardiance. Therapy will require regular blood sugar testing, and insulin doses may need to come down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some insulin secretagogues are commonly prescribed as a primary therapy along with Jardiance. These include glipizide, glyburide, and glimepiride. Other medications, such as nateglinide and repaglinide, also cause the body to secrete more insulin. Blood sugar will need to be regularly checked when combining Jardiance with any of these medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"blood-pressure-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood pressure medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to removing glucose through the urine, Jardiance and similar drugs also filter out sodium, reducing the body\u2019s total sodium content and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/care.diabetesjournals.org\/content\/diacare\/38\/3\/429.full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowering blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For this reason, Jardiance should be taken cautiously in combination with blood pressure medications. Not only does the combination increase the risk of low blood pressure, but some blood pressure medications also raise the risk of low blood sugar or other side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other drugs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, some drugs either increase or decrease the effects of Jardiance on blood sugar. Drugs that increase or complement Jardiance\u2019s therapeutic effects also put people at risk for low blood sugar.
