ED often affects men older than 40, but recent ED statistics show it could be increasingly common in younger men. Sexual dysfunction doesn\u2019t just affect sex and intimacy. We asked survey-takers about the physical and emotional causes of their condition, if they sought treatment and what type of treatment they tried, how much they spent on treatment, and whether insurance covered it. Here\u2019s what we found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/erectile-dysfunction-statistics\/\"><b>See more erectile dysfunction statistics<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summary of findings:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#physical-causes\">27% don\u2019t know what physically causes their ED.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#emotional-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35% report that stress causes their ED. Anxiety (32%) and depression (27%) are other top emotional causes of ED.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#seeking-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39% never sought treatment for ED.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#common-treatments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication (63%), supplements (31%), and exercise (28%) were the most popular ED treatments.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">64% spend less than $200 per year for ED treatments.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#insurance-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">34% pay out of pocket for all ED treatment.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#counterfeit-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27% were concerned about receiving counterfeit ED medication.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36% did not experience side effects of ED medication.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#medication-adherence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23% stopped taking ED medication due to ineffectiveness, side effects, or because their ED went away.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"physical-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27% of respondents don\u2019t know what physically causes their ED<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urologyhealth.org\/urology-a-z\/e\/erectile-dysfunction-(ed)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile dysfunction happens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when there is limited blood flow to the penis or nerve damage. Many health conditions and medications for these conditions can affect blood flow and nerve health. It\u2019s not surprising that high blood pressure was the most common physical cause of ED reported in our survey. That\u2019s because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.escardio.org\/The-ESC\/Press-Office\/Press-releases\/how-to-treat-high-blood-pressure-without-ruining-your-sex-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> damages arteries and restricts blood flow. Furthermore, certain blood pressure medications can also decrease penile blood flow. Patients should work with their healthcare provider to find the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blood-pressure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best blood pressure treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that won\u2019t affect their sex life.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29% have high blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27% don\u2019t know the physical causes of their ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23% have low testosterone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23% reported ED as a side effect of medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19% are overweight\/obese<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19% have diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% have high cholesterol and\/or clogged blood vessels (atherosclerosis)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% have heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9% have prostate cancer or enlarged prostate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7% have COPD<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7% reported other physical causes of ED (i.e., diet, age, poor circulation, nerve damage)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6% have spinal cord injuries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% have bladder problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4% reported ED as a complication of surgery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3% have renal (kidney) disease or failure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Physical-Causes-ED.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20341 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Physical-Causes-ED.png\" alt=\"Chart illustrating the top physical causes of erectile dysfunction\" width=\"1435\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Physical-Causes-ED.png 1435w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Physical-Causes-ED-300x94.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Physical-Causes-ED-1024x320.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Physical-Causes-ED-768x240.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1435px) 100vw, 1435px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"emotional-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35% of respondents report stress causes their ED<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ED can also have mental or emotional causes. Daily stressors, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/stress-anxiety-and-erectile-dysfunction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performance anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and depression can contribute to the inability to become or stay aroused. Additionally, substance use (including tobacco products, alcohol) can also cause sexual dysfunction. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2917074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that males who had three or more alcoholic drinks a day or 10 or more cigarettes a day commonly experienced episodic ED.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35% reported that stress causes their ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32% have anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27% have depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27% reported substance use as a cause of ED (includes smoking\/tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, and using illicit drugs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% have low libido<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19% don\u2019t know the emotional causes of their ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16% have low self-esteem<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% reported relationship problems cause their ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% reported other mental causes of ED (i.e., schizophrenia, Peyronie\u2019s disease)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22% reported none of the listed causes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emotional-Causes-ED.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20354 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emotional-Causes-ED.png\" alt=\"Chart illustrating the top emotional causes of erectile dysfunction\" width=\"1416\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emotional-Causes-ED.png 1416w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emotional-Causes-ED-300x93.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emotional-Causes-ED-1024x318.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emotional-Causes-ED-768x239.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1416px) 100vw, 1416px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"seeking-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39% of respondents never sought treatment for ED<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a third of respondents reported that they never sought ED treatment. An additional 26% reportedly waited one or more years to seek ED treatment.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emotional-Causes-ED.png\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% immediately sought treatment after experiencing ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7% sought treatment after one to three months of experiencing ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% sought treatment after four to six months of experiencing ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% sought treatment after seven to nine months of experiencing ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9% sought treatment after 10 to 12 months of experiencing ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11% sought treatment after one to two years of experiencing ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% sought treatment after two to three years of experiencing ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3% sought treatment after three to four years of experiencing ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6% sought treatment after five or more years of experiencing ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39% never sought ED treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of those who never sought treatment, 37% reported having episodic ED and 35% believe ED is just a natural part of aging.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37% don\u2019t always experience ED\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35% believe ED is just a natural part of aging<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27% are not concerned enough about ED to seek treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% did not feel comfortable talking to their healthcare provider about ED treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17% cannot afford ED treatment or reported that ED treatment is too expensive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% believe ED will go away on its own without treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12% do not have a desire to have sex or reported that sexual health is not an important quality of life for them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8% have a serious illness\/chronic health condition that they need to prioritize above ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6% reported other reasons (i.e., does not have a sexual partner, it only happened once)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6% did not feel comfortable filling their ED prescription<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4% do not have a healthcare provider who I can trust<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% reported their healthcare provider was or seemed unwilling to discuss ED with them<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"common-treatments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication, supplements, and exercise were the most popular ED treatments among respondents<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because there are so many possible causes of ED, there are also many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/erectile-dysfunction-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. ED medication such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/viagra\">Viagra<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cialis\">Cialis<\/a> is the most common treatment among our survey respondents. Deficiencies can also contribute to impotence, so taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-vitamins-treat-erectile-dysfunction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin B3, B9, C, D, and L-arginine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may help. Exercise and diet changes can also treat the underlying cause of ED, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and obesity. Newer and more invasive treatment options for ED include stem cell therapy, shockwave therapy, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prp-injection\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">platelet-rich plasma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were only reported by 8% of respondents.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emotional-Causes-ED.png\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">63% took ED medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31% took vitamins, dietary supplements, or herbal remedies for ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28% exercised to help their ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% use testosterone replacement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% made diet changes to help their ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% used meditation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12% participated in talk therapy and\/or couples therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11% used ED devices (i.e., rings, vacuum pumps, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9% used prostate massage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7% used acupuncture<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4% reported other ED treatments (i.e., changes in medication, injectable drugs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3% received stem cell therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3% used platelet-rich plasma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% used penile implants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% used shockwave therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">64% of respondents spend less than $200 per year for ED treatments<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While 17% of respondents reportedly did not seek ED treatment because of its cost, most respondents who did seek treatment paid $200 or less per year (or $17 or less per month) for ED treatment. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cheap-cialis-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To maximize savings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, those interested in taking ED medication should request a generic drug (sildenafil, tadalafil, etc.), as insurance is more likely to cover generic drugs, and they\u2019re always more affordable than brand names even if you\u2019re paying out of pocket.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emotional-Causes-ED.png\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19% spent $0 per year on ED treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11% spent $1-$50 per year on ED treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% spent $51-$100 per year on ED treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14% spent $101-$200 per year on ED treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8% spent $201-$300 per year on ED treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7% spent $301-$400 per year on ED treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7% spent $401-$500 per year on href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-viagra-covered-by-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance coverage of ED medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other treatments is hit or miss. It depends on the patient\u2019s insurance plan and deductible. Half of the respondents (53%) who used ED treatment reported that their insurance covered at least some of the cost. These customers risk receiving <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/counterfeit-viagra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">counterfeit medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can be ineffective and sometimes unsafe to take. These include headache, upset stomach, back and muscle pain, flushing, and stuffy nose. Our ED survey showed that most people (47%) who take ED medication have been taking it for three years or less. Some ED drugs can be taken every day, while others are only taken as needed.
