Typically, it is a direct result of an underlying health condition such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/disorders\/all-disorders\/chronic-pain-information-page\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">past injuries, back problems, nerve damage, or fibromyalgia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Statistics indicate that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/67\/wr\/mm6736a2.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in five adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S. live with chronic pain. At the same time, reports show it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.painnewsnetwork.org\/stories\/2017\/5\/20\/an-epidemic-of-undertreated-chronic-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasingly under-treated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Chronic pain management in patients with multiple conditions can be complex. It starts with determining the cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of chronic pain<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic pain usually falls into three basic classification types:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Nociceptive pain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> represents the normal response to insult or injury of tissues such as skin, muscles, visceral organs, joints, tendons, or bones. An example of nociceptive pain is arthritis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Neuropathic pain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is otherwise known as nerve pain. It is a type of chronic pain that occurs when nerves in the central nervous system become injured or damaged. Spinal cord injury pain, phantom limb (post-amputation) pain, and post-stroke central pain or shingles are some examples of neuropathic pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Inflammatory pain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a result of the activation and sensitization of the nociceptive pain pathway by a variety of mediators released at a site of tissue inflammation. Examples of pain caused by inflammation include appendicitis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and herpes zoster.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are certain kinds of chronic pain\u2014such as fibromyalgia and tension headaches\u2014that can\u2019t be easily classified, and fall outside these main types. These categories are important because the pain type plays a huge role in what chronic pain treatment options will be most effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/shingles-treatment-and-medications\/\"><b>Shingles treatment and medications<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common medications for chronic pain relief<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of medications that are commonly prescribed for people with chronic pain, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and acetaminophen:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are many types of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs). Some of them (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) may be obtained over-the-counter. Others, such as Mobic (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/meloxicam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meloxicam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), are available by prescription.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Topical pain medications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Over-the-counter topical creams can give relief. Or, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lidocaine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription lidocaine patches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> applied to the area (for 12 hours on and 12 hours off) can alleviate pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Antidepressants: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the older categories of antidepressants may be very helpful in controlling pain; most notably the tricyclic antidepressants. These medications can relieve pain in doses that are lower than the doses needed to treat depression.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Anticonvulsants (anti-seizure) medications: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medications can be very helpful for some kinds of nerve type pain (such as burning, shooting pain).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-muscle-relaxers\/\"><b>Muscle relaxants<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medications are most often used in the acute setting of muscle spasms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Nerve blocks:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This involves injections into the epidural space of the spinal column and provides long-term pain management, especially for those with chronic back conditions. There are several types of nerve blocks administered in a hospital setting, and they depend on the area of the body being treated. Typically, they are injected into the spinal region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Trigger point injection:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Another type of pain management technique is referred to as a trigger point injection (TPI). This is an injection that contains a corticosteroid and\/or an anesthetic, and is injected directly into the area causing the pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Opioids: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When used appropriately, if non-opioid medications are not effective or not tolerated, opioids may be very effective in controlling certain types of chronic pain. They tend to be less effective or require higher doses in nerve type pain. For pain that is present all day and night, a long-acting opioid is usually recommended, and may be supplemented with a shorter-acting opioid for breakthrough pain. However, doctors have had to adhere to new prescription standards set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (as well as individual state and even pharmacy policies) from overuse of opioids. The amount of opioid-related deaths has increased dramatically in the past few years, which has left both physicians and patients who experience chronic pain seeking ways to treat low to moderate levels of chronic pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural chronic pain relief\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For long-term chronic pain management, non-opioid methods are preferable, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Alternative therapy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommended non-medicinal therapies include acupuncture, biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, massage, and the use of external TENS units. Reports indicate that these pain management techniques paired with psychotherapy are extremely effective.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Exercise: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light exercise, like yoga, can help with certain types of chronic pain by improving circulation and reducing stress. It\u2019s especially effective for arthritis and back pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Heat and cold<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Heating pads and ice can be used frequently with minimal side effects to help manage many kinds of chronic pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Spinal cord stimulation:<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clinicalpainadvisor.com\/opioid-addiction\/non-opioid-alternatives-for-the-management-of-chronic-pain\/article\/517932\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SCS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a therapy that masks pain signals before they reach the brain\u2014the small device is implanted in the body to deliver signals to the spinal cord. It may be an option for chronic back, leg, or arm pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/arthritis-treatment-and-medications\/\"><b>Arthritis treatment and medications<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emerging chronic pain treatment options<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the potential for opioid addiction, researchers are continuously searching for effective alternatives that stop the pain sensation rather than mask it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transcranial direct-current stimulation, or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/880404\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tDCS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has been gaining traction as a potentially effective non-pharmacological approach to chronic pain treatment. A clinical trial has shown significant improvements in pain associated with knee osteoarthritis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has also focused on the autoimmune causes of chronic pain. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prohealth.com\/fibromyalgia\/library\/showarticle.cfm?libid=19132\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An infection or injury can prompt an autoimmune response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is often invisible, and can result in extreme pain. Antibody panels could be a new treatment for chronic pain and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/psb.1542\/pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should open exciting new options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SPR Therapeutics <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crainscleveland.com\/article\/20170515\/NEWS\/170519892\/spr-therapeutics-awarded-6-million-u-s-department-of-defense-grant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was awarded a $6 million contract<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the U.S. Department of Defense for research in non-opioid pain management therapy. It will help advance SPR\u2019s SPRINT Peripheral Nerve Stimulation System and help conduct advanced clinical trials for those living with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/neuropathy-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neuropathic pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s designed to activate target nerve fibers and deliver pain relief without opioids.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resources for chronic pain management<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theacpa.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Chronic Pain Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers a wealth of valuable information for those who have chronic pain.
