Vortioxetine, the active ingredient in Trintellix, is believed to balance serotonin levels in the brain, which may help improve mood, memory, and cognitive function in those with depression. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trintellix\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an effective medication, but it may not be the right medication for everyone because of possible side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-trintellix-take-to-work\/\"><b>How long does Trintellix take to work?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-side-effects-of-trintellix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of Trintellix<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most side effects occur just after starting the medication. However, the side effects of Trintellix are generally mild and go away as the body adjusts to the medication. Some side effects may stick around for as long as the treatment continues. Studies suggest vortioxetine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6303197\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may improve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sleep cycles and help reduce daytime drowsiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"trintellix-weight-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix weight changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are known to be associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5964332\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Trintellix, on the other hand, appears to have minimal effects on body weight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2018\/204447s017lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that followed patients over six months, Trintellix had no significant effects on body weight. However, one study showed patients gained an average of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4235387\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around one pound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while on Trintellix after 52 weeks or one year of treatment. About 18% of study participants taking Trintellix gained or lost 7% of their original weight at the beginning of the study. Trintellix, then, has less of an effect on weight than other antidepressants, but weight changes are possible and will vary by person.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"trintellix-withdrawal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix withdrawal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other medications that affect serotonin in the brain, Trintellix <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/stop-taking-trintellix-abruptly\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should not be discontinued abruptly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although the drug is not addictive, the dosage should be gradually decreased over several weeks before stopping to prevent discontinuation syndrome or withdrawal symptoms. The most common Trintellix withdrawal symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discontinuation syndrome may take a few hours to five days to appear and may persist for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trintellix-withdrawal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to 10 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or more. Usually, these symptoms resolve without treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-trintellix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Trintellix<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix can cause serious side effects, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal thoughts and behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleeding problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worsened manic episodes in people with bipolar disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angle-closure glaucoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low sodium levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis or angioedema<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"suicidal-thoughts-and-behaviors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal thoughts and behaviors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix carries a boxed warning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults. When taking Trintellix, individuals who may be at risk should be closely monitored for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/suicidality-children-and-adolescents-being-treated-antidepressant-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signs of suicidality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thoughts or comments about suicide<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attempts to commit suicide<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unusual mood changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe anger, irritability, or aggression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation or restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New or worsening depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New or worsening anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic attacks\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk-taking behaviors or dangerous impulses<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"serotonin-syndrome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants like vortioxetine may cause serotonin syndrome, a potentially serious condition caused by too much serotonin in the brain. Discontinue Trintellix immediately and seek immediate medical care if you notice signs of serotonin syndrome such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hallucinations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of coordination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle twitching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rigid muscles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High or low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"low-blood-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood sodium<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonergic drugs like vortioxetine may cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/diseases-conditions\/syndrome-of-inappropriate-antidiuretic-hormone-secretion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SIADH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a problem with the hormone that controls the body\u2019s elimination of water and electrolytes from the body. SIADH, in turn, could cause the levels of salt (sodium) in the blood to fall, a condition called hyponatremia. Low blood sodium can be a serious medical condition with symptoms such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty concentrating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsteadiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hallucinations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coma<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"angle-closure-glaucoma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angle-closure glaucoma<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diseases-and-conditions\/narrow_angles_a_tip-off_to_eyesight_risk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angle-closure glaucoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an eye problem that can happen suddenly and cause vision loss or blindness in just a few hours or days. It happens when the drainage system for the eye located between the iris and the cornea is blocked, causing fluid to quickly accumulate within the eye. Watch for symptoms such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red or swollen eyes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea or vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with \u201cnarrow angles\u201d between the iris and the cornea are most at risk for developing angle-closure glaucoma. Narrow angles can be diagnosed during a routine eye exam and are typically treatable through surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-trintellix-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do Trintellix side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild side effects are temporary and will usually subside as treatment continues. Other side effects may disappear within a few days after the medication is discontinued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe side effects usually take longer to resolve. Mild cases of serotonin syndrome typically resolve within <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7592898\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one to three days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of discontinuing the medication, but severe cases require immediate medical attention. In symptomatic cases of low blood sodium, Trintellix should be discontinued, and a healthcare provider should be contacted. Severe cases of low blood sodium levels may require hospitalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"trintellix-contraindications-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix contraindications &amp; warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix may not be the right medication for everyone. For various reasons, some people may not be able to take the medication, while others may need to be cautious while using it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone with severe allergies to Trintellix should not take the medication. Experiencing a serious allergic reaction is a medical emergency. Seek medical help if you experience hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face or throat after taking Trintellix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"monoamine-oxidase-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should not use Trintellix if you are currently taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or have taken them recently. You must wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAOI before starting Trintellix. In addition, if you are currently on Trintellix, you should not take an MAOI for at least 21 days after stopping Trintellix. Also, do not start Trintellix if you are being treated with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"poor-metabolizers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor metabolizers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people don\u2019t break down vortioxetine very well. In poor metabolizers, the drug can linger at high concentrations, increasing the risk of side effects. Fortunately, people can be genetically tested. Poor metabolizers will be restricted to a maximum daily dose of 10 mg.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix is FDA-approved for use in adults 18 and older. Trintellix has not been determined to be either safe or effective for children.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"seniors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix has been shown to be effective and safe in people older than 65. No dose adjustment is required.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pregnancy-and-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There isn&#8217;t enough research to fully understand if Trintellix is safe during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, it&#8217;s important to talk to a healthcare provider before starting or stopping this medication. Using Trintellix in the third trimester could increase the chances of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/204447s026lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious lung problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and withdrawal symptoms for newborns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, there is not enough research or information on whether Trintellix passes into breast milk or affects a nursing baby. The Drugs and Lactation Database (National Library of Medicine) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK500835\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mothers who are taking Trintellix to switch to alternative medications before breastfeeding an infant. The other alternative is to find a different way to feed the infant.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"trintellix-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix has several drug interactions that can lead to various adverse effects. It\u2019s important to discuss any medications you take with a healthcare provider, including prescription medicines, over-the-counter drugs, and dietary supplements, before starting Trintellix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"trintellix-and-maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix and MAOIs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix should not be taken with MAOIs due to an increased risk of serotonin syndrome. For those that do, side effects will often be minimal.
