Many people don\u2019t, and that can lead to dangerous drug interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can supplements interact with medications?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary supplements are growing in popularity and going nowhere fast. In fact, the dietary supplement market is expected to grow to a whopping $278 billion by the year 2024. It is estimated that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crnusa.org\/CRNconsumersurvey\/2015\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly 68%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Americans use a dietary supplement and that 84% of Americans express confidence in the safety, quality, and effectiveness of the supplements that they take.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are about <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarp.org\/health\/drugs-supplements\/info-04-2012\/supplements-interfere-with-prescription-drugs.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5,300 distinct dietary supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, most of which have not been studied systematically. The studies that do exist have found that a number of supplements may affect the way certain enzymes in the body metabolize drugs. They may inhibit the enzymes\u2019 ability to break down a drug, causing medication to build up to potentially toxic levels. Others may increase the rate at which a drug is broken down, making it less effective. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/what-you-should-know-about-how-your-supplements-interact-with-prescription-drugs-1456777548\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half of patients with chronic disease or cancer use dietary supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with prescription medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 common supplement interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. St. John\u2019s wort<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intended for relieving depression and fatigue, it may reduce the effectiveness of contraceptives, HIV\/AIDS drugs, and anti-rejection drugs. Combining St John\u2019s wort with OTC cough medicines or antidepressants could cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/side-effects-of-antidepressants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a dangerous, potentially life-threatening condition resulting from the buildup of too much serotonin that can cause rapid blood pressure changes. If patients are undergoing surgery, doctors advise stopping the use of the supplements at least a week or two before.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. <\/span><b>Magnesium\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supposedly aiding migraines, heart disease, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sleep-aids-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fatigue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, magnesium supplements may reduce the absorption of antibiotics and increase the absorption of blood thinners.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid drug and supplement interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Speak with your healthcare provider or pharmacist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> When starting a new prescription or supplement, it is best to do some research on it. Ask your doctor if there are any dietary concerns with your treatment. Medications generally have warning labels that you should be sure to notice and obey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Keep your doctor up-to-date. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new supplement or drastically changing your diet.
