It can also be combined with lithium or valproate to treat bipolar depression in adults. Lurasidone, the active ingredient in Latuda, affects the activity of dopamine and serotonin, chemicals that help pass signals between nerves. Seek medical advice if you experience any minor side effects when taking Latuda.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Latuda<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All antipsychotic medications can cause serious and long-term side effects. Severe Latuda side effects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolic changes resulting in elevated blood sugar, elevated triglycerides, elevated cholesterol, low blood sodium, or diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperthermia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess prolactin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decrease in white blood cells<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble swallowing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neuroleptic malignant syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tardive dyskinesia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mania<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal thoughts and behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stroke<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Death<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other antipsychotic medications, Latuda may result in metabolic changes and weight gain, though this is less likely and less pronounced than with similar medications. Latuda may not be the right medication for people with a family history of diabetes or metabolic syndrome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All antipsychotic medications interfere with the body\u2019s ability to regulate body temperature. As a result, people taking Latuda are at an increased risk of heatstroke (hyperthermia), a potentially life-threatening medical condition. Caution must be taken to avoid hot weather or overexertion when taking Latuda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda increases the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults being treated for bipolar depression. When giving Latuda for depression, it is important to watch for signs of suicidality including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal ideation or comments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attempts at suicide<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anger, irritability, or aggression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worsening depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worsening anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic attacks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk-taking behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other serious side effects and complications from Latuda and overuse of antipsychotic drugs include:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperprolactinemia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orthostatic hypotension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dysphagia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neuroleptic malignant syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tardive dyskinesia<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many antipsychotic medications lower the \u201cseizure threshold,\u201d putting patients at an increased risk for seizures due to other causes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2013\/200603lbls10s11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, patients taking Latuda had a very low rate of seizures, making Latuda a low-risk drug for inducing seizures. However, the manufacturer, Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc., advises that Latuda be used with caution in patients with a history of seizures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Latuda raises the risk of stroke and death in patients over the age of 65 with dementia-related psychosis. For this reason, Latuda is not approved to treat dementia-related psychosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda weight gain<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antipsychotic medications typically cause metabolic changes and weight gain as unwanted side effects, but the extent of weight gain varies by drug. However, according to the same clinical trial listed above, Latuda scores on the low end, causing an average weight gain of about one pound in the short-term and about two pounds in the long-term (one year). Around 4.8% of patients in this trial gained more than 7% of body weight versus about 3.3% who were taking a placebo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What all this means is that the risk of weight gain when taking Latuda is lower than it is with other antipsychotics. This is due to Latuda\u2019s weak effects on certain types of nerve receptors that other antipsychotic medications do interact with. As a result, side effects such as weight gain, tremor, and orthostatic hypotension are less common and less severe than with other antipsychotic drugs. However, the manufacturer advises that weight be monitored carefully when taking Latuda.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"withdrawal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda withdrawal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no studies or clinical trials focusing on withdrawal symptoms of Latuda, though there are reports of Latuda withdrawal. Neither the manufacturer nor the Physician\u2019s Desk Reference specify withdrawal as a side effect or recommend a tapered dosing regimen when discontinuing Latuda.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, antipsychotic drugs that work in the same way as Latuda, called dopamine antagonists, can cause withdrawal symptoms when discontinued, but not all patients will experience withdrawal effects when discontinuing atypical antipsychotics. Those that do may experience mild or severe withdrawal symptoms. Nonetheless, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychiatryonline.org\/pb\/assets\/raw\/sitewide\/practice_guidelines\/guidelines\/schizophrenia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychiatric Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends reducing the dose by 10% each month when discontinuing antipsychotic medications to reduce the risk of withdrawal or symptom rebound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common withdrawal symptom when discontinuing antipsychotics is symptom rebound. If the patient has been symptom-free for some time, the return of symptoms can seem worse than before treatment. Other symptoms of antipsychotic withdrawal include involuntary movements, twitching, slow movements, compulsion to move, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. After long-term treatment, Latuda will take about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Latuda-lurasidone-hydrochloride-553.861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two to four days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to completely clear from the body. Most minor and some serious side effects will begin to resolve about that time. Unfortunately, some serious side effects may take longer to resolve and others, such as tardive dyskinesia, may be irreversible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda contraindications &amp; warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda comes with an FDA black-box warning that it is not to be used to treat dementia-related psychosis because of the risk of death or stroke. Latuda should also not be taken by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are allergic to lurasidone or any of its inactive ingredients<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People taking drugs or substances that will strongly interfere with the body\u2019s metabolism of lurasidone<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other warnings include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neuroleptic malignant syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tardive dyskinesia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low white blood cell counts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orthostatic hypotension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal thoughts or behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevated blood sugar, fats, or cholesterol<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda treats adolescents 13 and older for schizophrenia and children and adolescents older than 10 for bipolar depression. The safety of Latuda has not been studied in children younger than 10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When used to treat bipolar depression, Latuda significantly raises the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children and adolescents. Children and young patients should be monitored for worsening depression or signs of suicidality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no safety studies of the use of Latuda in pregnant women or nursing mothers. There is anecdotal evidence of newborns who have movement disorders and withdrawal symptoms when antipsychotics are taken in the third trimester of pregnancy. Latuda may be secreted in breast milk, but the exact amounts have not been determined. As with any antipsychotic medication, women should discuss the pros and cons of taking Latuda while pregnant or nursing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The safety of Latuda in people over the age of 65 has not been thoroughly studied and the prescribing information does caution in prescribing in the elderly (age 65 and older). Therefore, the choice to prescribe this medication in those age 65 and older, with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar depression, is made on a case-by-case basis in consultation with a healthcare provider. Latuda does raise the risk of stroke and death in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis, so Latuda is not approved for those patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For drugs like Latuda, drug interactions are complex and confusing. To simplify Latuda interactions, other drugs should not be taken or taken with caution because they can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interfere with the body\u2019s ability to break down lurasidone, the active ingredient in Latuda or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worsen side effects<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CYP3A4 inducers and inhibitors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda is prohibited from use with medications that are strong CYP3A4 inducers and inhibitors. Put simply, these drugs either speed up the breakdown of lurasidone by the body (CYP3A4 inducers) or prevent and slow down the breakdown of lurasidone (CYP3A4 inhibitors).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that strongly accelerate the breakdown of lurasidone will significantly decrease its effectiveness. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>St John\u2019s wort<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antibiotics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: rifampin, rifaximin, and rifamycin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Certain types of anticonvulsants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: carbamazepine, phenytoin, primidone, and fosphenytoin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Barbiturates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: pentobarbital and phenobarbital<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dexamethasone, Lysodren (mitotane), Xtandi (enzalutamide), Erleada (apalutamide), Orkambi (lumacaftor), and Rydapt (midostaurin)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that only moderately or weakly speed up the breakdown of lurasidone can be taken, but doctors may need to modify therapy or dose amounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs and foods that slow down the body\u2019s metabolism of lurasidone, however, increase the concentration of Latuda in the blood and so increase the risk of side effects. The strongest inhibitors that should never be taken with Latuda include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Grapefruit, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">curcumin, and goldenseal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Certain types of antibiotics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: clarithromycin, erythromycin, troleandomycin, and telithromycin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antifungal (azole) drugs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: econazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole, methimazole, and posaconazole<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Blood pressure medications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: diltiazem and verapamil<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Certain types of antiviral medications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: ritonavir, atazanavir, darunavir, lopinavir, efavirenz, tipranavir, Incivek (telaprevir), Invirase (saquinavir), Rescriptor (delavirdine), Crixivan (indinavir), Vitekta (elvitegravir), Victrelis (boceprevir), and Viracept (nelfinavir)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Certain types of immune system modulating anticancer drugs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as Tasigna (nilotinib), Kisqali (ribociclib) Zydelig (idelalisib), and Rydapt (midostaurin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ergotamine, terfenadine, nefazodone, loperamide, cobicistat, Vaprisol (conivaptan), Diacomit (stiripentol), naloxone, danazol, and lonafarnib\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapefruit has substances that are also CYP3A4 inhibitors.
