In 2019, prior to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the World Health Organization listed vaccine hesitancy as one of the greatest threats to global and public health. That same year, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/osteopathic.org\/2019\/06\/24\/45-of-american-adults-doubt-vaccine-safety-according-to-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Osteopathic Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted a survey that revealed nearly half (45%) of Americans doubted vaccine safety. Our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/flu-shot-survey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 flu shot survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found similar results with 42% of respondents reporting that they did not plan to get a flu shot this season. In December 2020, six days after the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-takes-additional-action-fight-against-covid-19-issuing-emergency-use-authorization-second-covid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the second coronavirus vaccine, SingleCare conducted a separate vaccination survey with 2,000 Americans to gauge the perception of vaccine safety and whether vaccinations should be required in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vaccination-statistics\/\"><b>Vaccine statistics<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key findings:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#routine-vaccinations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26% of respondents are not up to date on routine vaccinations.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#vaccine-frequency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14% of respondents don\u2019t get any vaccines at all.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#vaccine-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">77% of respondents have not experienced vaccine side effects.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#vaccine-safety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60% of respondents have concerns about vaccine safety.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#vaccine-research\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45% of respondents don\u2019t research vaccines before getting them.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#vaccine-questions\">33% do not ask their doctor any questions before getting vaccinated.<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#vaccine-exemptions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of respondents believe the government should remove at least some exemptions for vaccine requirements.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#vaccines-for-public-school\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">71% of respondents believe children should be required to receive all required vaccinations to attend public schools.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"routine-vaccinations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26% of respondents are not up to date on routine vaccinations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the majority were reportedly up to date on at least some routine vaccinations, a quarter of respondents were not. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issues recommendations of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/vaccines-age.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccinations by age group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The majority (77%) reportedly had not. We did not ask survey takers the reasons behind their concerns, but the CDC addresses some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/concerns\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common concerns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on its website. These concerns include vaccine additives, autism and vaccines, febrile seizures, Guillain-Barre syndrome, and vaccines during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% Do not have any concerns about vaccine safety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36% Have some concerns about vaccine safety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24% Have significant concerns about vaccine safety<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, 66% of respondents who reported having significant concerns about vaccine safety also reported that they have not experienced side effects of a vaccine.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Safety-Concerns.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21537 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Safety-Concerns.png\" alt=\"Chart illustrating 60% of people reported having vaccine safety concerns\" width=\"929\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Safety-Concerns.png 929w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Safety-Concerns-300x146.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Safety-Concerns-768x374.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 929px) 100vw, 929px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the majority of respondents who are concerned about vaccine safety still get vaccinated or get their children vaccinated<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although 60% of respondents reported vaccine safety concerns, only 37% of them (445 people) reported that their concerns prevented them from getting vaccinated or getting their child vaccinated.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">63% No, concerns about vaccine safety have not prevented me or my children from getting vaccinated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37% Yes, concerns about vaccine safety have prevented me or my children from getting vaccinated<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"vaccine-research\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45% of respondents don\u2019t research vaccines before getting them<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rate of vaccine research that respondents reported is split nearly 50\/50. Slightly more respondents reportedly research vaccines before getting vaccinated or before their family members are vaccinated.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55% Yes, I research vaccines before I or my family gets them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45% No, I do not research vaccines before I or my family gets them<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 14% who reportedly do not get any vaccines, 47% reportedly research vaccines. Of the additional 17% who reportedly get some but not all recommended vaccines, 63% reportedly research vaccines. Finally, of the 445 respondents who reported their vaccine safety concerns prevent them from getting vaccinated, 77% reportedly research vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top sources of vaccine information<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respondents reported receiving vaccine information from the following sources:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">58% Speaking to a medical professional<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39% Online articles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28% Academic or clinical research and studies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24% Friends and family<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23% Pharmaceutical industry news or manufacturer literature<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16% do not research vaccine information<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9% Social media<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3% Other (CDC, the news, TV or radio reports, advertisements)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of those who reported having significant concerns about vaccine safety:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">51% get their vaccine information from medical professionals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">51% get their vaccine information from online articles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">34% get their vaccine information from friends and family<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17% get their vaccine information from social media<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14% do not research vaccine information<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% get their vaccine information from other sources<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"vaccine-questions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33% do not ask their doctor any questions before getting vaccinated<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We asked survey respondents whether they asked their doctor questions about a vaccine before getting vaccinated. Vaccine safety was the most commonly reported question. Effectiveness and mechanism of action followed. However, a third of respondents reported that they do not ask their healthcare providers any questions about vaccines before they or their family receive a vaccination.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% Yes, I asked about the safety of the vaccine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36% Yes, I asked about the effectiveness of the vaccine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32% Yes, I asked about how the vaccine works<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33% No, I have not asked my doctor any questions about vaccines<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 33% who reportedly do not ask questions about vaccines 27% (179 people) also reported that they do not get any vaccines at all. However, 73% (484 people) of those who do not ask questions about vaccines also reported that they and\/or their family receive at least some recommended vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vaccine-exemptions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of respondents believe the government should remove at least some exemptions for vaccine requirements<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/phlp\/publications\/topic\/vaccinationlaws.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, vaccine requirements vary by state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. State laws establish requirements for school children, which apply to children who attend public and private schools as well as daycare facilities. All states provide medical exemptions and some also have religious and\/or philosophical exemptions. Most adults in America are not required to get vaccinated except state healthcare workers. More healthcare facilities are requiring their healthcare workers to be vaccinated for certain vaccine-preventable diseases. We asked our survey takers whether the U.S. government should remove exemptions for required vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">61% No, people should have absolute choice over what vaccines they receive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18% Yes, the government should remove all exemptions for required vaccines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11% Yes, the government should remove personal choice exemptions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% Yes, the government should remove religious exemptions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% Yes, the government should remove medical-based exemptions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We found that more male respondents (22%) than female respondents (14%) believe the government should remove all exemptions for required vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, 20% of respondents with no children believe the government should remove all exemptions for required vaccines.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Exemptions.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21544 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Exemptions.png\" alt=\"Chart illustrating how many people are for or against removing vaccine exemptions\" width=\"1278\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Exemptions.png 1278w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Exemptions-300x108.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Exemptions-1024x369.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Vaccine-Exemptions-768x277.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1278px) 100vw, 1278px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vaccines-for-public-school\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">71% of respondents believe children should be required to receive all required vaccinations to attend public schools<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49% Yes, except for medical exemptions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29% No, parents should be able to decide what vaccinations their children receive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22% Yes, in all circumstances<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quarter (24%) of respondents with no children reported that children should be required to receive required vaccinations to attend public schools in all circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, 32% of respondents who are not up to date on their routine vaccinations believe children should be required to receive required vaccinations to attend public schools except for medical exemptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methodology:<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare conducted this vaccine survey online through AYTM on Dec. 24, 2020. This national survey includes 2,000 United States residents adults ages 18+.
