For the latest on the COVID-19 pandemic, please visit the<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/i><\/a><i>.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s always cocktail hour during a crisis!\u201d \u201cTime for some quaran-tinis!\u201d \u201cSchools closed=mommy juice starting at noon.\u201d It\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ve made it through the last year without seeing one of these memes on social media or being invited to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/zoom-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoom happy hour<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While playful in nature, the implication\u2014increased alcohol use during the pandemic\u2014is much more serious. Alcohol and coronavirus have become inextricably connected over the last 365 days. As cases spiked, so did drinking. Even as bars and restaurants remained closed, alcohol use at home increased.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe you were an occasional drinker, who stocked up on wine to cope, or even a teetotaler who started having a nightly beer for lack of anything else to do. Unfortunately, that extra alcohol consumption might not be very good for your health. But there\u2019s some good news: You can do something about that.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why the pandemic drove people to drink<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in the early weeks of the pandemic, experts warned that people might turn to alcohol to cope with the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic. They noted that factors like ongoing lockdowns and long-term social isolation might lead people to drink more than they normally would. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/pdfs\/journals\/lanpub\/PIIS2468-2667(20)30088-8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commentary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in April 2020 in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lancet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> journal noted that periods of isolation \u201cmight lead to a spike in alcohol misuse, relapse, and potentially development of alcohol use disorder in at-risk individuals\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The predictions came true. The frequent use of alcohol and COVID-19 became closely linked for many people. A<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/article-abstract\/2770975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in September 2020 noted that alcohol sales went way up as stay-at-home orders commenced. People drank more often, according to the study. And the researchers also found that heavy drinking among the women who were surveyed increased 41% last spring when compared with the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical psychologist Reid Hester, Ph.D., senior science officer at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/checkupandchoices.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CheckUp &amp; Choices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, isn\u2019t surprised that many people turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. Alcohol is easily available and relatively inexpensive. And it makes people feel good\u2014at first. \u201cThe risk lies in the fact that while one or two is good, three or four is not,\u201d Hester says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much alcohol is too much?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people may not even realize they\u2019re drinking a lot more than they used to\u2014or they may not realize how much more they\u2019re drinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the recently released <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the definition of moderate drinking is two drinks or fewer per day for men and one drink or fewer per day for women. And the guidelines emphasize that in general, drinking less is better for your health. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohol-health\/overview-alcohol-consumption\/moderate-binge-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defines binge drinking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as five or more drinks for men or four or more drinks for women within a two-hour time period.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that sounds like a lot, consider this: what constitutes one drink may be less than you\u2019re thinking. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-12\/Dietary_Guidelines_for_Americans_2020-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cone alcoholic drink equivalent is defined as containing 14 grams (0.6 fl oz) of pure alcohol.\u201d That could include one 12-ounce beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, or 1.5 fluid ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits. This means a standard bottle of wine contains five 5-ounce servings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol\u2019s effect on the immune system<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased alcohol use is always something that concerns experts because it can affect your health in so many ways. Excessive alcohol use can lead to chronic diseases such as liver disease and digestive diseases. Even moderate alcohol use can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8626352\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exacerbate mental health conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as depression and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-deal-with-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in the time of COVID-19, you might also want to consider how alcohol use might affect your body\u2019s ability to fight off the coronavirus\u2014or protect yourself against infection. \u201cAbusing alcohol in high dosages damages the immune cells, making it harder for your body to fight against infectious diseases,\u201d explains Mary Gay, Ph.D., evening program director for<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesummitwellnessgroup.com\/about\/our-staff\/dr-mary-gay-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Summit Wellness Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an outpatient addiction treatment center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, drinking alcohol, especially to excess, may lower your inhibitions and make you less cautious about your behavior. You might forget to social distance, or you might be less vigilant about things like wearing a mask around other people, washing your hands or using hand sanitizer, which are typically recommended as ways to help protect you from the coronavirus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to cut back on drinking\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve been wondering, perhaps a little uncomfortably, if you should cut back, that might be a sign. \u201cIt is time to address your drinking when it\u2019s no longer fun and it causes problems in your health, relationships, work, or social functioning,\u201d says says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/riahealth.com\/team\/john-mendelson-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Mendelson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, chief medical officer at Ria Health, a tech-enabled AUD treatment system. \u201cIf other people are bothered by your drinking, it\u2019s time to decrease it. If you don\u2019t like who you become when drinking, it\u2019s time to decrease it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cut back. \u201cMost people can successfully cut back on their drinking, especially if it has escalated recently, and they don\u2019t have a long list of alcohol-related problems,\u201d says Hester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do you do it? Here are a few strategies that may help you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Set a goal.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Set a limit for how much you will drink, and write it down so it\u2019s harder to dismiss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Assess your alcohol collection.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It may be easier to cut back if you don\u2019t keep any alcohol in your home.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Keep track.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Write down how much you drink and when. You can use a diary or an app on your phone, whichever makes it easier for you to keep tabs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Designate alcohol-free days.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019re not planning to quit drinking altogether, you can still abstain on certain days to reduce your consumption.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drink slowly. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you do indulge in an alcoholic drink, try to slow down and savor it, rather than gulping it down. You might follow each drink with a glass of water or a nonalcoholic drink.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Watch out for your triggers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People tend to be creatures of habit, notes Hester. You might consciously develop some new habits to replace those old habits. Did you get into a habit of having a couple of drinks every day at a certain time or under certain circumstances? If you pay attention to these triggers, you can avoid them. \u201cTriggers are powerful, but over time, you can manage and learn to address those triggers effectively,\u201d says Hester.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Still having trouble cutting back?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIf you find these tactics aren\u2019t working, it might be time to seek professional support from a doctor or therapist,\u201d says Gay. If you think you\u2019re dealing with a more serious addiction, it\u2019s important to seek professional help, from your healthcare provider or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/find-help\/national-helpline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Helpline for SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: As experts learn more about the novel coronavirus, news and information changes.
