A lot of the Rx names are hard to pronounce. Some of them even look alike. Is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydralazine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydralazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the medication you take for itching, or is it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydroxyzine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydroxyzine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thing is, there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/about-fda\/fda-basics\/fact-sheet-fda-glance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 20,000 prescription medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the market, so there are bound to be plenty of medications that look or sound like each other. They\u2019re called look-alike sound-alike drugs, or LASA drugs for short. They can be concerning for you, and for your pharmacist or healthcare providers if they are mixed up. Here\u2019s what is important about LASA drugs, and how to protect yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are look-alike sound-alike drugs?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LASA drugs are medications that look or sound similar to each other, either by their generic name, or brand name. They might have similar packaging, similar-sounding names, or similar spellings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Prozac sounds a lot like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prilosec-otc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prilosec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when said out loud. While Prozac is an antidepressant, Prilosec is an over-the-counter heartburn medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLook-alike and sound-alike medications are a much bigger problem than the public realizes,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.krollmedical.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spencer Kroll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, Ph.D., a board-certified internal medicine specialist at The Kroll Medical Group. \u201cThe Food and Drug Administration, in addition to monitoring for safety and efficacy of medications, is supposed to regulate names, colors, and shapes of medications to avoid confusion. The sheer volume of medications has precluded this from effectively happening.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wondering if your medication is commonly confused? The Institute for Safe Medication Practices has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ismp.org\/recommendations\/confused-drug-names-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complete list of all LASA drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is updated regularly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are some LASA drugs high alert medications?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you mistook Prilosec for Prozac for one dose, it\u2019s probably not going to cause much harm. Similarly, if you weren\u2019t aware that the cold medicine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nyquil-severe-cold-flu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nyquil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in it, and took a separate dose of Tylenol along with it once, it\u2019s probably all right. However, it means you took unnecessary medication under the assumption it was a different product based on the brand name, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lara-k-ellinger-50b6531b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lara Ellinger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., medication safety and drug information pharmacist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And some LASA drugs <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> result in real harm. There\u2019s not a general consensus of which particular medications are more high alert than others, Dr. Ellinger explains. But certain types of medications carry a bigger risk if a mistake is made. Drugs that affect the blood\u2019s ability to clot, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can be dangerous in too high or too low of a dose. Opiates, prescribed for pain, can cause respiratory issues if taken in excess. Similar looking insulin pens such as Humalog and Levemir can cause blood sugar to drop drastically if you inject the \u2018right\u2019 dose of the wrong one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you prevent LASA errors?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s impossible for pharmacists to know all the different medications. They need to rely on certain safety measures to make sure they don\u2019t confuse one LASA drug for another. Many errors will be caught before they even get to the consumer, but even at home, look-alike sound-alike drugs can cause issues. So how can you prevent these mistakes after you pick up your prescription?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Stay in touch with your healthcare provider<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kroll tries to make things clear for his patients by choosing medications with different first letters or different-sounding names to avoid confusion. You can request that your provider do this as well. Make sure that you sit down with your provider at least yearly (and when changes are made) to go over your complete medication list so both parties understand what\u2019s being taken\u2014and clear up any confusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Know the reasons for your medications\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jamia\/article\/25\/7\/872\/5001908\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that simply having providers put the reason for the medication on the prescription label, can prompt patients to recognize that reason and make sure they\u2019re taking the correct medication. It\u2019s important to know what medications are for, and why they\u2019re being taken, explains Dr. Ellinger. When picking up prescriptions from the pharmacy, be sure they\u2019re the correct ones by checking that the indication matches what you expect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Store medications appropriately<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Ellinger recommends people to store medications in the original bottles or packages. Don\u2019t combine pills into one bottle. If you\u2019ve already done so, ask your pharmacist if you\u2019re unsure about which medications are which.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Mark prescription bottles<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, even with the best intentions, it can still be hard to differentiate between medications. Dr. Ellinger explains that by placing a mark on the bottle (not the cap), you can tell one medication apart from another. Even using different colored marks on packaging can help keep track of them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may notice that if your pill looks different upon a refill, it\u2019s likely just a different manufacturer making the drug, but it\u2019s always best to check with the pharmacist just in case. If you ever need clarification about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your medications, don\u2019t hesitate to call your provider or pharmacist, especially when it comes to look-alike sound-alike medications.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You open up your medicine cabinet and see a row of pill bottles.
