Do you frequently have headaches in the morning? You could be grinding your teeth while sleeping. Medically known as bruxism, it is a repeated, unconscious clenching and grinding movement. It is involuntary, and you often aren&#8217;t aware that you are doing it, especially if you grind your teeth while sleeping. It\u2019s difficult to consciously quit without strategies for how to stop grinding teeth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-bruxism\">What is bruxism?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruxism is the medical name for teeth grinding. Teeth grinding is the repeated rubbing together, or gnashing, of the biting surfaces of your teeth. You can apply up to 250 pounds of pressure on your teeth, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msdmanuals.com\/home\/mouth-and-dental-disorders\/symptoms-of-oral-and-dental-disorders\/teeth-grinding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSD Manual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s a lot of force.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"causes\">What causes teeth grinding?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teeth grinding is common. Up to one-third of adults exhibit bruxism behaviors during daytime hours (awake bruxism); more than 1 in 10 have sleep bruxism (or nocturnal bruxism), according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/blog\/teeth-grinding.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cedars-Sinai Medical Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Anywhere from 20% to 30% of children grind their teeth, usually while sleeping, according to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/familydoctor.org\/condition\/teeth-grinding-bruxism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">familydoctor.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no one root cause of bruxism. However, there are numerous contributing factors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stress:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In times of high anxiety, many people grind their teeth. It can become a habit and continue even during calm times.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Genetics:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bruxism might be hereditary. As many as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5026093\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half the people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who grind their teeth also have a close family member who also has bruxism.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Certain medical conditions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bruxism is more common in children diagnosed with a hyperactivity disorder, such as ADHD, or certain health issues, such as cerebral palsy. It\u2019s more common in adults with depression, anxiety, acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and certain eating disorders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sleep disorders:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Teeth grinding is associated with snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, and frequently changing sleep patterns. For example, shift workers who alternate between daytime and nighttime sleep may be more likely to grind teeth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lifestyle factors: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-happens-when-you-quit-smoking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tobacco use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-happens-when-you-stop-drinking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol consumption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, caffeine intake, and even chewing gum are all linked to bruxism. Though, more research is needed to determine how these risk factors may contribute to the condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vitamin deficiencies:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There is some speculation that certain vitamin deficiencies can contribute to bruxism. &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-much-vitamin-d-should-i-take\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> deficiencies and a poor absorption of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are being studied as potential factors in teeth grinding,&#8221; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hvdental.com\/staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cristi Freinberg-Trufas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DDS, a dentist at Hudson Valley Dental Care in New York. &#8220;There are many studies underway, but no conclusive evidence has emerged that the American Dental Association has adopted.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that cause bruxism<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruxism can be a potential side effect of some medications, according to a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6698238\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study published in 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Possible culprits include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antipsychotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antipsychotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and commonly used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/side-effects-of-antidepressants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/venlafaxine-hcl-er\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effexor (venlafaxine)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/paxil-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil (paroxetine)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prozac-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac (fluoxetine)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sertraline-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoloft (sertraline)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The median time for teeth grinding is three to four weeks after starting the medication, although some people start after only a few doses. It takes about three to four weeks after stopping the medicine for teeth clenching to stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-cause-dry-mouth\/\"><b>12 medications that cause dry mouth<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"diagnosis\">How is bruxism diagnosed?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Bruxism is fairly common, but people can be asymptomatic and not know they have this behavior,&#8221; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mycenters.com\/mary-charles-haigler-dmd-ms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Charles Haigler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DMD, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orofacial pain specialist<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Carolinas Centers for Oral &amp; Facial Surgery. This is often true when teeth grinding occurs at night. Sometimes a family member brings attention to it because of the noise\u2014clicking, and popping\u2014that interrupts their sleep. &#8220;Other people might notice side effects [of the grinding],\u201d explains Haigler. \u201cSome potential adverse effects seen by oral health professionals are cracked teeth, tension-type headaches, severe facial or jaw pain, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early signs of bruxism include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facial soreness or jaw pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches, especially in the morning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stiffness in the jaw or tooth pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earaches\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disrupted sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Painful symptoms from teeth grinding can be treated temporarily with an ice pack, massage, over-the-counter pain reliever, but none of these treat the underlying cause of bruxism. Without proper attention, bruxism can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/bruxism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term damage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abraded teeth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dental problems, such as chipped, cracked, or loose teeth, crowns, or implants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitive teeth caused by wearing down of tooth enamel<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tense facial and jaw muscles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dislocation of jaw<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Locking of jaw<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damage to the inside of the cheek<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flat areas on biting surface of teeth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many times, bruxism is diagnosed through observation by a dentist or family members; however, a definitive diagnosis involves an overnight stay in a sleep clinic\u2014called polysomnography. This sleep study is often expensive and time-consuming, and people might opt for the less invasive observation method, where a presumptive diagnosis is made.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-stop\">How to stop grinding teeth<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In over 90% of cases, bruxism treatment is very simple and effective,&#8221; says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/mda-dentist.com\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel Wolter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DMD, a restorative and general dentist in Arizona. &#8220;In most cases, this also helps with joint or muscle pain and headaches.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are numerous treatment options to break your teeth grinding habit, including natural remedies:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Relaxation techniques<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people can reduce grinding their teeth by practicing relaxation techniques; however, these are more successful for people with mild bruxism during the day. In young children, bruxism often goes away and treatment is not needed. Until it resolves, creating a calming bedtime routine to promote relaxation might help, according to familydoctor.org. This includes limiting television and electronics for an hour or two before bedtime, playing calming music, taking a warm bath, and spending time reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Behavioral changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning techniques such as how to rest the tongue, teeth, and lips properly\u2014or to rest the tongue upward\u2014can relieve discomfort in the jaw. Also, learning to identify triggers and use stress management and facial exercises can reduce bruxism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Mouth guards<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also called appliances or splints, mouth guards are used to prevent your teeth from rubbing together. They are made of soft material and fit over either the upper teeth or lower teeth. The splints are worn at night to relieve the pressure of clenching teeth together, according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.org\/~\/media\/ADA\/Publications\/Files\/patient_49.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Dental Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Custom night guards are more expensive than over-the-counter mouth guards, but they\u2019re a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colgate.com\/en-us\/oral-health\/bruxism\/over-the-counter-vs-custom-night-guard-which-is-right-for-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment option. &#8220;It can be helpful to wear the night guard during the day to notice when you are grinding or clenching your teeth,&#8221; Dr. Freinberg-Trufas says. \u201cAwareness around grinding can help you start to break the habit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. A mandibular advancement device (MAD)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of a mouth guard, ask your dental health provider about a mandibular advancement device (MAD). MAD works by stabilizing the mouth and jaw to prevent jaw clenching and teeth grinding. It is placed inside the mouth at night and holds the lower jaw forward and can also be used to reduce chronic snoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Biofeedback<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process uses an electronic instrument to measure muscle activity and signals when there is too much activity, so you can take steps to stop it, which is better suited for daytime bruxism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescriptions such as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-muscle-relaxers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle relaxants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can reduce tension in the jaw muscles. These might not stop the clenching or grinding but can reduce the effects of bruxism. &#8220;Unfortunately, the dosages required to achieve relief are often too high for normal function, so it is difficult to use them realistically except in severe cases,&#8221; Wolter says. It is also essential to look at current medications to determine if they could be an underlying cause of bruxism and, if so, talk about changing to a different medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Botox injections<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Botox injections paralyze jaw muscles used during teeth grinding. The FDA has not approved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/botox\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Botox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for teeth grinding. Because it\u2019s an off-label treatment, your insurance might not cover it. However,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/news\/20180117\/grind-your-teeth-at-night-botox-might-help#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study completed in 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found it helpful in reducing nighttime bruxism.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Dental procedures<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reshaping or reconstructing the biting surface could improve function if grinding and clenching caused an abnormal bite.
