At least<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 million adults and 6 million children<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live with allergic rhinitis, otherwise known as hay fever, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although sniffling and sneezing isn\u2019t limited to the spring, symptoms can start as the first flowers start to bloom (and last through the fall\u2014depending on what you\u2019re allergic to). In the northeast, April showers bring May flowers. But, in many parts of the U.S., spring allergy season can start as early as February when pollen starts to circulate , sticking around through summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-spring-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes spring allergies?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Allergy, Asthma &amp; Immunology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AAAAI), the most common spring allergy causes are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pollen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mold spores<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pollen allergies were the most common type of allergy reported by survey respondents in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/allergy-survey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare\u2019s allergy survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mold allergies were the third most common type of allergy reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tree pollination usually begins first, and then the grass pollen follows later in the spring. Since moisture helps mold develop, a rainier spring will result in more spores. Some people may be only allergic to one thing, but many are allergic to more than one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are regional variations in the pollen that cause the worst symptoms. Take Texas, for example, which is known for its cedar fever. \u201cCedar, yellow pine, and ragweed are the most common seasonal pollen spring allergies in the Houston area,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/texassinusandsnoring.com\/about\/meet-dr-cilento-sinus-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben Cilento<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an otolaryngologist and sinus surgeon with Texas Sinus &amp; Snoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, to the north in Ohio, tree pollen is also the big culprit for spring allergies, but it\u2019s different trees causing the symptoms, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premierallergyohio.com\/provider\/summit-shah-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summit Shah, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an allergist with Premier Allergy &amp; Asthma. \u201cBirch, maple and oak are the worst ones for Ohio, and some sycamore and hickory,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though, it\u2019s not just the trees in your own yard that are to blame. For people with spring allergies, the beauty of the great outdoors can bring the following reactions:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watery eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postnasal drip<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience these telltale signs each allergy season,\u00a0 consider making a plan to tackle spring allergy symptoms with your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prevention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention is a good first step toward coping with a spring allergy. Start with these strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Avoid allergy triggers.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWe recommend staying indoors as much as possible, keeping doors and windows closed, and keeping the air conditioning on,\u201d says Dr. Shah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Take a shower at night<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wash that pollen off your body and hair after you\u2019ve been outside. You can do this immediately when you return home or later, but definitely rinse off before you turn in for the night. Don\u2019t sleep in any clothes that you\u2019ve worn outside, as the pollen can stick to them and get onto your bedding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Use air filters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Spring allergens like pollen, animal dander, dust mites, and mold spores may be more pervasive inside your home than you realize. An<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/allergies\/allergy-treatment\/air-filters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">air filter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might help. For a single room, using an air purifier with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter in your home can help filter out some of those sneeze-inducing allergens. Or if you want to upgrade the filtration in your home\u2019s HVAC system, you can add a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) filter with a rating of 11 to 13 that can catch particles in the air before you can breathe them in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Watch for weather conditions that might contribute. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check the forecast every day. A windy day or the hours after a thunderstorm can increase the spread of pollen, which can aggravate your symptoms.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Monitor the pollen counts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sign up for a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pollen.aaaai.org\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">customized alert<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that notifies you about the pollen and mold levels in your area through the AAAAI&#8217;s National Allergy Bureau. Some versions can make you drowsy, so be sure to read the labels and pick a non-drowsy version if that\u2019s important to you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Decongestants:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These medications can temporarily reduce a stuffy nose and open up your nasal passages. Oral decongestants options include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sudafed-pe-head-congestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed PE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (phenylephrine) and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pseudoephedrine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(pseudoephedrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). You could try a nasal spray like<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxymetazoline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrin (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxymetazoline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) but experts warn that you can become<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rebound-congestion-nasal-spray-addiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dependent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on them, so you should only use them for short-term use (three days or less).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Nasal corticosteroids:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These steroids decrease swelling in the nasal passageways. A couple of options that you could try include<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rhinocort-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhinocort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (budesonide) or<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-allergy-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fluticasone). Steroids may take a few days or even a few weeks to take effect.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Leukotriene receptor antagonists:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A drug like<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/singulair\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singulair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (montelukast) can be used to treat symptoms of allergies, as well as asthma. They work by blocking the effects of leukotrienes in response to allergens, since that can cause inflammation and even airway constriction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Cromolyn sodium nasal spray:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nasalcrom\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasalcrom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the brand name for cromolyn nasal spray, which can alleviate some of the sneezing and runny nose types of symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Nasal rinse: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also use a neti pot to rinse out your nasal passages. \u201cIt cleans out a lot of the debris and dirt and pollen that gets stuck in that area,\u201d says Dr. Shah.<\/span><b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec coupons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl coupons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sudafed-pe-head-congestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed coupons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-allergy-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase coupons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/singulair\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singulair coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although these drugs are available over-the-counter, check with your healthcare provider to see which allergy medication is appropriate for you\u2014as well as compatible with any medical conditions you have and medications you take.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important to understand the difference between treating the symptoms of allergies versus treating the allergy itself,\u201d explains Dr. Cilento. If treating the allergy itself to bring you relief from your spring allergies sounds appealing, you might want to consider immunotherapy, or allergy shots. Over the course of about three to five years, you\u2019ll receive doses that gradually increase your exposure to a particular allergen, so your body learns to tolerate it. Research suggests that the process of immunotherapy can reduce or even eliminate the need to take medication for allergy symptoms in the future. Of the 82% of allergy sufferers who participated in SingleCare\u2019s allergy survey, 30% reported allergies had a moderate to significant effect on their quality of life. If allergies affect your quality of life year-round, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allergy-shots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immunotherapy might be worth it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce you receive treatment with immunotherapy for that allergen, you won\u2019t have to be treated for it again,\u201d says Dr. Cilento.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-for-spring-allergy-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor for spring allergy symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not certain that your symptoms are caused by that pesky pollen floating through the air, it might be worth seeing your doctor about allergy testing. A skin test that monitors for allergic reactions or a blood test that checks for specific antibodies may be used to diagnose the type of allergy you have and how severe it is.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, seasonal allergy symptoms can also be similar to those of other medical conditions. \u201cAllergic symptoms can be the same as chronic sinusitis,\u201d says Dr. Cilento. \u201cThe treatment is different for each problem, so it is important to diagnose it properly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-vs-allergy-symptoms\/\"><b>Allergy vs. COVID symptoms<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you know for certain that you have seasonal allergies that show up in the spring, take heart: There\u2019s always summertime on the horizon. \u201cIt\u2019s too hot for things to grow, so you do get a bit of a lull in July and August,\u201d says Dr. Shah.
