However, when Vyvanse is taken for binge eating disorder, weight loss was experienced in 4% of patients. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4966690\/pdf\/ndt-12-1827.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that a clinically significant number of people with binge eating disorder lose weight when taking Vyvanse by reducing appetite and the number of binge eating episodes each week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because lowered appetite and weight loss are side effects of Vyvanse, some physicians prescribe Vyvanse off-label for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6406487\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe obesity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in children and adolescents.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vyvanse-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In previous studies, 5% to 6% of adults report anxiety as a side effect of Vyvanse. Children experience anxiety as a Vyvanse side effect less often. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4617411\/pdf\/cap.2015.0075.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, anxiety and agitation were reported in less than 1% of children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normally, stimulants such as Vyvanse speed up and excite the brain, so alertness, energy, nervousness, restlessness, agitation, racing thoughts, and anxiety are common side effects. However, in people with ADHD, certain stimulants increase alertness, attention, and impulse control while reducing hyperactivity, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-vyvanse-help-with-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and restlessness. These stimulants increase certain chemicals in the brain\u2014dopamine and norepinephrine. Because patients with ADHD do not produce enough of these chemicals, stimulants improve their ability to manage hyperactivity and attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too much dopamine and norepinephrine, a chemical similar to adrenaline, overexcites the brain and causes high energy, inattention, nervousness, agitation, excitability, or euphoria. If a person with normal levels of dopamine and norepinephrine is experiencing anxiety, Vyvanse will probably worsen the anxiety. Side effects such as anxiety, jitteriness, and tension may be indications that either Vyvanse or the dose prescribed is inappropriate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vyvanse-withdrawal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse withdrawal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse is a Schedule II <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/controlled-substances-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled substance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning it has a high potential for abuse and dependence. The prescribing physician may use a tapering dose to prevent or reduce withdrawal symptoms. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5511319\/#:~:text=Of%20314%20participants%20enrolled%2C%20191,hostility%2C%20n%20=%201).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two-year study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that included 191 children and adolescents who were taking Vyvanse long-term for ADHD treatment, the most commonly reported adverse events were decreased appetite, weight loss, insomnia, and headache. These peaked early in the study, then declined thereafter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study confirmed two long-term effects that warrant monitoring regularly, especially in children: cardiovascular events (more specifically, increased blood pressure and pulse) and weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guidelines already support monitoring these regularly in Vyvanse users, and these findings support that ongoing monitoring is necessary for safe, long-term use of Vyvanse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vyvanse-contraindications-and-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse contraindications and warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse is not the right medication for everyone. CNS stimulants include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine, cocaine, or ginseng<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ADHD medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain nasal decongestants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appetite suppressants such as phendimetrazine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wakefulness agents that treat narcolepsy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steroids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sympathomimetic medications such as epinephrine or norepinephrine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"depressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depressants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, combining stimulants with depressants is rarely advisable. Amphetamines such as Vyvanse usually blunt the effects of depressants, but some combinations of amphetamines and depressants can be hazardous. Vyvanse should not be used with depressants such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol, marijuana, or cannabinoids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narcotics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sedatives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbiturates<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nerve pain drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-nausea drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anticonvulsants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Parkinson\u2019s disease medications<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"antidepressants-and-serotonergic-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants and serotonergic medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unless deemed safe by a healthcare provider, Vyvanse should not be used in combination with any other drug that alters levels of serotonin. In particular, when taking Vyvanse, avoid antacids, acidic foods, citrates, and diuretics. Certain multivitamins should also be avoided.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask a healthcare professional for a complete list of drug and food interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-vyvanse-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid Vyvanse side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stimulants such as Vyvanse commonly cause side effects.
