These are all signs your beloved pet could be experiencing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form of anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dogs experience anxiety the same way that humans can.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDogs typically experience one of three main types of anxiety: general fear such as noise sensitivity or a fear of strangers, separation anxiety, and stress due to aging and health concerns,\u201d says Danielle Bernal, BVSc, MRCVS, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/daniellebernal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massachusetts-based veterinary professional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with WHIMZEES Daily Dental Treats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to treating dog anxiety, there is a lot to consider including implementing changes to your pet\u2019s environment, providing plenty of opportunity for play and exercise, removal of triggering stimuli\u2014and even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/putting-dog-prozac-anti-anxiety-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication in more extreme cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of anxiety in dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common causes of anxiety in dogs are loud noises (like storms, fireworks, or vacuums\/roombas), being left alone (separation anxiety), being in strange places, or meeting new people and animals, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drgaryrichter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gary Richter, DVM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a veterinarian and veterinary health expert with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rover.com\/blog\/the-dog-people-panel\/dr-gary-richter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rover.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For some dogs,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being in a car can trigger anxiety, too. Different types of anxiety are also affected by an individual dog\u2019s training and personality, Dr. Richter says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What breeds are prone to anxiety?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog anxiety is not unique to any particular breed, but there may be some breeds that are more prone to it. \u201cAny dog can develop anxiety,\u201d says Dr. Burch, who adds that dogs who are highly active, and\/or \u201cworking dogs that do not have a job\u201d may be particularly prone to developing anxiety. Examples of breeds that could fit into these categories include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">German shepherd<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australian shepherd<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labrador retriever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vizsla<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Border collie<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs of any breed can experience anxiety. As Bernal points out, \u201cA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-59837-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted in Finland <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analyzing 264 breeds found that pet parents thought more than 70% displayed some form of anxiety.\u201d With anxiety being such a common issue for dogs, a multifaceted approach to treat it may be best.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of anxiety in dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs can\u2019t tell their owners in words if they are feeling stressed and anxious, but there are some signs to watch for in the form of troubling or even aggressive behaviors. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/michelle-burch-471b1973\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle Burch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DVM, from Safe Hounds Pet Insurance, some of these behaviors may include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive barking, howling, or whining<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yawning\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drooling\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Licking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in pupil dilation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in ear position<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in body posture<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shedding suddenly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden urination or defecation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoidance\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying to hide or escape<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Destructive behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These behaviors are normal under some circumstances, but can be clues as to how a dog is feeling. \u201cSigns of anxiety can range depending on the severity from mild to severe,\u201d Dr. Burch says. \u201cAnxiety and fear can also change depending on the situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventing anxiety in dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be wondering, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pet-meds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can I give my dog for anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u201d First, it\u2019s a good idea to consider what changes can be made to help your dog at home, says Dr. Burch.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pheromones<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe first thing I recommend is using pheromone diffusers and collars,\u201d Dr. Burch says. \u201cThe pheromones used are synthetic hormones that mimic the ones produced by mother dogs to calm their young. Having this pheromone available for your dog to smell and stimulate the olfactory system can reduce anxiety.\u201d You can buy D.A.P. (dog appeasing pheromone) over-the-counter at your local pet store. It\u2019s frequently sold under the brand name Comfort Zone, Adaptil, or Thunder Ease. Most diffusers are plugged into the wall for a set amount of time and collars should be worn by the dog continuously. Sprays are also available for short term or more specific situations like traveling. Follow the instructions on the package, and consult with your vet for more details.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compression products<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another natural remedy to consider for dog anxiety involves compression products such as a compression shirt or jacket, sometimes called a thunder vest. It\u2019s a technique that is used for people who feel anxious, too. \u201cSimilar to swaddling a baby or using a weighted blanket, a compression shirt will apply gentle and constant pressure to your dog\u2019s torso,\u201d Dr. Burch says. \u201cThe gentle pressure releases the calming hormone oxytocin and endorphins.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding triggers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog owners should work to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identify any anxiety triggers, or sources of stress for your pet. \u201cIf you notice any triggers that you can easily avoid or limit, like a loud television or vacuum cleaner, take that step,\u201d Bernal says. \u201cYour dog is relying on you to create a safe environment with as few stressors as possible!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to removing stressful triggers, Bernal also recommends softly petting your pup when they are stressed, or distracting them with a treat or dental chew. Redirecting their attention to a simple task they can succeed in can help keep them from panicking. Dogs thrive on positive reinforcement, so be sure to reward good behavior!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating a safe environment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another tip from Bernal involves creating a safe space for your pet such as a small room located far from the main entrance of a space and filling it with comforting items like a familiar toy and of course, plenty of food, water, and treats. \u201cThis space will serve as a place to retreat when anxiety starts to take over,\u201d she explains. Offer your pet treats in this area or store his favorite toys here when there\u2019s no stressful activity happening to help build a positive association with the space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also want to play some calming music for your pet. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have dogs respond well to classical music being played, especially when left at home alone,\u201d Dr. Burch says. \u201cCertain songs are scientifically proven to decrease anxiety in your dog and create a calming environment.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing exercise and entertainment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, it\u2019s important to consider the role that boredom can play in leading a pet to feel anxious. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure your dog is getting adequate exercise needs or has a job to complete,\u201d recommends Dr. Burch. \u201cDogs should be exercised daily for at least an hour of cardio.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without regular exercise, stress can manifest as tension\u2014which leads to health problems like chronic pain and digestive issues,\u201d explains Dr Burch. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also recommends adding enrichment into your environment with puzzle toys, Snufflemats, lures, and other novel toys to help keep your dog engaged even while you are away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve tried all you can at home to help your anxious dogs but are concerned that they may need more help, it\u2019s important to contact a veterinarian. \u201cYour veterinarian will perform a complete physical examination to rule out any painful area that can lead to anxiety. Additionally, they may recommend baseline blood work to rule out any metabolic or organ disease leading to the symptoms,\u201d Dr. Burch says. Based on these results, a veterinarian may then recommend some natural supplements or medication.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplements for dog anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before turning to dog anxiety medication, there are some natural supplements your veterinarian may recommend. \u201cMultiple products are available on the market to help reduce our pets&#8217; anxiety for both situational events and long-term needs,\u201d says Dr. Burch. She recommends looking for products containing:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L-theanine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnolia extracts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phellodendron extracts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whey protein concentrate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thiamine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alpha-casozepine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Burch says it may take up to six weeks to see the full effects of these supplements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 medications for dogs with anxiety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When traditional methods have failed for more extreme cases, a veterinarian may recommend over-the-counter or prescription drugs to treat your dog\u2019s anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour veterinarian should examine dogs that are not improving within four to six weeks of changes to your environment,\u201d Dr. Burch says. \u201cDogs that show almost all of the signs of anxiety typically need prescription medication in addition to environmental changes and should be evaluated,\u201d she adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to the best medication for dogs with anxiety, Dr. Richter says it\u2019s a decision for your dog&#8217;s personal veterinarian\u2014they know your dog&#8217;s history, so you should consult with them before giving your pet any medication. \u201cAlso, it&#8217;s important to understand that anxiety cannot simply be medicated away,\u201d Dr. Richter says. \u201cSpecific [behavior] training needs to happen along with medication.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some medications that are commonly used to treat dog anxiety include the following, but be sure to talk to your vet before giving your pet any medication.
