As you settle into the couch to watch a movie with your family, your partner grabs you a beer from the fridge. As you\u2019re about to pop the top off, you wonder, can I mix Latuda and alcohol? Is it safe to combine the two?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is Latuda?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/latuda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodtherapy.org\/drugs\/anti-psychotics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atypical antipsychotic medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a second-generation antipsychotic. These Rx drugs are newer than the typical (first-generation) antipsychotic drugs\u2014and cause fewer side effects. (First-generation antipsychotics can cause movement disorders, also known as extrapyramidal symptoms. These can include tremors, paranoia, anxiety, and involuntary muscle contractions.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=afad3051-9df2-4c54-9684-e8262a133af8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indicated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults and adolescents ages 13-17 years with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/schizophrenia-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">schizophrenia<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults and children 10 years and older with bipolar depression (major depressive episodes associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bipolar-disorder-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bipolar I disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults with bipolar depression (in combination with lithium or valproate)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Can you take Latuda with alcohol?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/latuda\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latuda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be taken with food\u2014specifically, a snack or small meal of at least 350 calories. But, can you wash that down with a glass of wine? No, unfortunately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no information about the specific interaction between Latuda and alcohol use in the prescribing information because people with a history of alcohol abuse were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00790192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not included<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Latuda studies. However, the Latuda manufacturer website instructs people to avoid drinking alcohol because it may worsen the side effects of Latuda.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combination of Latuda and alcohol can increase central nervous system (CNS) depression and respiratory depression. This means you could potentially have slowed breathing and profound sedation. The combination can also cause psychomotor impairment. Meaning, it\u2019s dangerous to drive a car or operate machinery. It can also lower your blood pressure, even making you feel dizzy when you stand up, or cause fainting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Can you drink alcohol with any other bipolar medications?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=0584dda8-bc3c-48fe-1a90-79608f78e8a0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/latuda-vs-seroquel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seroquel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (quetiapine), another atypical antipsychotic medication, explains that the Rx drug made cognitive and motor impairments from alcohol worse in a clinical trial of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subjects with selected psychotic disorders. Because of this effect, it\u2019s recommended that you avoid alcoholic beverages while taking quetiapine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=7e117c7e-02fc-4343-92a1-230061dfc5e0#S7.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/risperdal\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperdal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (risperidone), another atypical antipsychotic, echoes this recommendation: \u201cGiven the primary CNS effects of risperidone,\u201d the manufacturer says, \u201ccaution should be used when Risperdal is taken in combination with other centrally-acting drugs and alcohol.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, if you are taking an atypical antipsychotic for bipolar disorder, abstaining from alcohol is the safest way to go.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Can you drink alcohol while taking mood stabilizers?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood stabilizers, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lithium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lithium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tegretol\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tegretol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (carbamazepine), should not be combined with alcohol. The combination of a mood stabilizer and alcohol can worsen symptoms and increase side effects like drowsiness and impairment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Does alcohol make bipolar depression worse?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with bipolar disorder should avoid alcohol, regardless of the medication they take. Alcohol can actually have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcoholrehabguide.org\/resources\/dual-diagnosis\/alcohol-and-bipolar-disorder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol addiction and bipolar disorder often occur together. Studies have shown that up to 43% of people with bipolar disorder have an alcohol use disorder at any given time. Drinking may seem like a relief when you\u2019re suffering from symptoms of feeling out of control. Although alcohol may make you temporarily feel better, it can worsen symptoms\u2014like mania or depression\u2014in the future.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have bipolar disorder and have any questions about alcohol or mixing your medications with alcohol, consult your healthcare provider for professional medical advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ve just taken your daily dose of Latuda with dinner.
