It\u2019s made by the liver but also enters the body via some of the foods we eat, particularly those high in saturated fats like red meats, butter, and processed foods. Cholesterol gets a bad rap because of its link to heart disease, but in actuality, it\u2019s necessary for good health. It helps build cell membranes and make hormones and vitamins. But too much of anything can be bad, including cholesterol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholesterol becomes a problem when excess amounts build up on artery walls (a condition called atherosclerosis), which causes blockages that can lead to heart attacks and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/signs-of-a-stroke\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strokes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. High cholesterol is a common yet silent condition. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cholesterol\/facts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">93 million Americans over the age of 20 have high total cholesterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and many don\u2019t know it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"types-of-cholesterol\">Cholesterol types<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholesterol is carried through your bloodstream via lipoproteins, particles that have cholesterol on the inside and protein on the outside. There are three types of cholesterol:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Low-density lipoprotein (LDL)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carries the cholesterol that moves out of the liver and into the bloodstream. It\u2019s known as the \u201cbad\u201d cholesterol because it can clog and narrow blood vessels, which leads to cardiovascular disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>High-density lipoprotein (or HDL) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carries the \u201cgood\u201d cholesterol. It moves from the blood back to the liver, where it\u2019s broken down.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carries <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-triglycerides-treatment-options\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triglycerides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a fat (and not cholesterol) that can raise your risk for heart disease if levels are too high.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"levels\">What\u2019s considered high cholesterol?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that all adults 20 and older have their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/cholesterol\/about-cholesterol\/what-your-cholesterol-levels-mean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood cholesterol levels checked every four to six years.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is done via a blood test called a lipid panel. Most of the fat in your body is made up of triglycerides. Overall, a healthy range for triglycerides is less than 150. A measurement of 150-199 is considered borderline high; 200 and greater is high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Is it ever possible for your HDL, the \u201chealthy\u201d cholesterol, to be too high and your LDL, the \u201clousy\u201d cholesterol, be too low? Experts at the Cleveland Clinic say yes, but it\u2019s rare. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/11920-cholesterol-numbers-what-do-they-mean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very high and very low cholesterol levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can point to certain health problems and should be investigated. Low LDL levels, for example, have been associated with depression and certain kinds of stroke. They fluctuate based on your diet, your physical activity levels, your age, and a variety of other factors. While you can\u2019t control every factor, there is a lot you can do to help lower your cholesterol levels and improve your heart health. Healthy lifestyle changes are key to lowering cholesterol. But it\u2019s important to note that the amount of reduction will vary from person to person and by how significant the changes are, notes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/c-patrick-green-md-cardiology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patrick Green, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cardiologist at UCHealth in Fort Collins, Colorado.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Increase soluble fiber<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soluble fiber is a type of fiber that forms a gel when digested. This gel helps to absorb things like cholesterol and fat in the intestines before they can move to the bloodstream. Foods rich in soluble fiber include oats, barley, fruits such as apples, oranges and berries, and vegetables like Brussels sprouts. A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajcn\/article\/111\/2\/307\/5675325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at adults with mildly high cholesterol levels found that those who ate two apples a day over an eight-week period were able to lower their cholesterol levels. The Cleveland Clinic notes that eating one and one half cups of oatmeal a day can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/oatmeal-how-much-you-need-to-lower-cholesterol-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower cholesterol by 5% to 8%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And added bonus: Many foods high in soluble fiber also contain polyphenols, plant-derived antioxidants that can also help lower cholesterol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Reduce saturated fat and trans fat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saturated and trans fats\u2014found in things such as red meats, bacon, butter, palm oil, high-fat dairy products, fried foods, and processed foods like packaged cakes and baked goods\u2014can increase cholesterol levels by making the liver less efficient at breaking down cholesterol pulled from the blood. The AHA recommends that saturated fat should only make up 6% of your daily calories. Experts recommend replacing saturated fats with more heart-healthy polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats, which include olive oil, canola oil, avocados, and most nuts. Prioritizing unsaturated fats is the main goal of the DASH diet to lower cholesterol and high blood pressure. The DASH diet recommends low-fat dairy products, lentils, whole grains, and healthy vegetable oils.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Add omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mediterranean diet is recommended for people with high cholesterol because it\u2019s packed with omega-3 fats. Some of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids\u2014which are thought to lower the production of cholesterol and triglycerides in the liver\u2014are oily, fatty fish (for example, salmon, mackerel, and sardines) as well as nuts and ground flax seeds. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2004\/0701\/p133.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 15 studies found that eating 4g of omega-3 fatty acids daily lowered triglycerides by 25% to 30%, increased LDL by 5% to 10%, and raised the good HDL cholesterol by 1% to 3%. What probably won\u2019t work? Taking fish oil supplements. \u201cFish oil in high doses may help lower triglycerides, but it doesn\u2019t lower LDL cholesterol,\u201d Dr. Green says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Avoid or limit cholesterol-raising foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatty meats, like well-marbled steaks, bacon, and sausages, among others<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Store-bought cakes and cookies, which are often made with saturated fat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fried food, frozen pizza, and microwave popcorn, which are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/high-blood-cholesterol\/in-depth\/trans-fat\/art-20046114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high in trans fat<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Processed foods like crackers, hot dogs, deli meats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Butter (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/expert-answers\/butter-vs-margarine\/faq-20058152\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">replace with margarine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-sugar foods and refined <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-are-carbohydrates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbohydrates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (candies, sodas, white pasta, white rice, etc.), which raise your body\u2019s LDL and decrease HDL. When it comes to sugar added into food, the AHA recommends that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4977979\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women consume no more than 24 grams daily and men 36 grams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One important thing to note: Don\u2019t necessarily shy away from egg yolks or shellfish just eat them in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/high-blood-cholesterol\/expert-answers\/cholesterol\/faq-20058468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moderate servings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While they are high in cholesterol, they don\u2019t seem to have an effect on cholesterol in the bloodstream and they contain many important nutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-cholesterol-diet\/\"><b>The best diet for high cholesterol<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular exercise improves liver function and the way your liver uses fats. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3906547\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one analysis of 51 exercise interventions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lasting 12 weeks or more, it was found that aerobic exercise (think jogging, running, or cycling) raised HDL cholesterol by 4.6% on average while lowering triglyceride levels 3.7% and LDL cholesterol levels by 5%. The same analysis found low-to-moderate resistance training to also be effective in lowering cholesterol. \u201cIf you can reduce the amount of fat in your liver through things like diet and exercise, then you can improve the way the liver handles lipid production,\u201d comments <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhhospitals.org\/doctors\/Neeland-Ian-1285818740\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ian Neeland, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of cardiovascular prevention at University Hospitals Harrington Heart &amp; Vascular Institute in Cleveland, Ohio.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Lose weight<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the way it impacts your liver and its cholesterol production, extra weight can raise your triglycerides and lower your HDL levels. That\u2019s not to say that people who are in the normal weight range or are even underweight don\u2019t have cholesterol problems. But in general, cholesterol tends to creep up as the excess pounds do. In fact, research shows that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK305895\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60% to 70% of people with obesity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have unhealthy cholesterol profiles. The good news? Even moderate weight loss\u2014as little as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4987606\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% to 10% of your body weight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some studies suggest\u2014can have cholesterol-lowering effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Quit smoking<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers aren\u2019t exactly sure why, but in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3110741\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people who quit smoking for a year had about a 5% increase in their HDL levels\u2014this, despite the fact that many of them gained an additional 10 pounds over that year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplements to lower cholesterol<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/high-blood-cholesterol\/in-depth\/cholesterol-lowering-supplements\/art-20050980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may help to lower your cholesterol\u2014but the operative word is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Many don\u2019t have enough well-executed, scientific studies behind them to support their claims. And supplements in this country don\u2019t undergo the rigorous safety and efficacy tests drugs must pass before they come to market. Purity standards and ingredient concentrations are also not regulated. Bottom line: Buyer beware. And talk to your healthcare provider before taking any supplement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fish oil<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main reason to take a fish oil supplement is for the omega-3s that are thought to lower your bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Though, experts agree it\u2019s better to get them through your diet, it\u2019s possible adding them in pill form could help. More research is needed to prove the benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niacin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niacin, a form of vitamin B3, seems to boost your good cholesterol while lowering your bad cholesterol and triglycerides. It\u2019s available by prescription, so discuss the benefits with your healthcare provider. There are side effects associated with the high dosage you need to lower cholesterol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High cholesterol medications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle and dietary changes won\u2019t always bring cholesterol down to healthy levels. Your healthcare provider may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/high-cholesterol-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribe medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if that is the case. In fact, 71% of adults with cardiovascular disease, 63% of adults with diabetes, and 54% of adults with hypercholesterolemia take prescription medication for cholesterol, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db177.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/cholesterol\/prevention-and-treatment-of-high-cholesterol-hyperlipidemia\/cholesterol-medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AHA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends cholesterol-lowering drugs for people who:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are age 40-75 and have diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have LDL cholesterol of 190 mg\/dL or higher<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are age 40-75, have an LDL reading of 70-189 mg\/dL, and have a 5%\u201319.9%, with risk factors, or 20% or greater, without risk factors of heart disease due to hardening of the arteries within 10 years (healthcare providers calculate risk using a formula that includes factors such as your age, gender, smoking history, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are medications that prevent the liver from producing cholesterol.
