Zoom and other video conferencing tools hosted work meetings, school lessons, and holiday celebrations. Even health visits were moved online or over the phone for people with non-emergency symptoms and illnesses. Telehealth is not a new concept, but its adoption was accelerated quickly over the past year. To better understand how Americans are adapting to virtual health visits, SingleCare conducted a telehealth survey of 1,700 adults in January 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/telehealth\/\"><b>What is telehealth?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key findings:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#pre-covid-telehealth-availability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">43% of respondents don\u2019t know if telehealth services were offered by their healthcare providers pre-pandemic.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#current-telehealth-availability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telehealth services are offered to at least 58% of respondents by their healthcare providers.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#willingness-to-use-telehealth\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">74% of respondents are open to using telehealth services.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#telehealth-services\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two-thirds of respondents are willing to use telehealth services for common illnesses and follow-up visits.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#telehealth-advantages\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saving time, not having to travel, and appointment availability are the most appealing aspects of telehealth.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#telehealth-disadvantages\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosis errors, exam challenges, and quality of care are the most common concerns of telehealth.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#virtual-vs-office-visits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">68% of respondents would prefer in-person visits over telehealth visits after the pandemic.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#telehealth-usage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 5% of respondents had used a telehealth service prior to the pandemic (2019 or earlier).<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#telehealth-reviews\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of those who have used telehealth services, 78% were satisfied with their experience.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#insurance-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance or Medicare completely covered telehealth services for 60% of respondents.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#telehealth-cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">62% of respondents pay an average of $0 to $30 per telehealth visit.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"pre-covid-telehealth-availability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">43% of respondents don\u2019t know if telehealth services were offered by their healthcare providers pre-pandemic<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the coronavirus outbreak, 43% of respondents reportedly did not know if their healthcare provider offered telehealth services. Less than 1 in 5 respondents reported that telehealth services were available to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19% Yes, telehealth services were available pre-pandemic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">43% I don\u2019t know if telehealth services were available pre-pandemic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38% No, telehealth services were unavailable pre-pandemic<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"current-telehealth-availability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telehealth services are now offered to at least 58% of respondents by their healthcare providers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, only 16% of respondents reported that their healthcare provider does not offer telehealth services. They were less keen on using telehealth for annual physicals, specialist visits, and physical therapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">69% Common illnesses\/infections (cold, flu, sinusitis, allergies)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">66% Follow-up visits (i.e., follow-up after a procedure or hospitalization)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49% Talk therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">44% Management for a chronic condition (heart disease, diabetes, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">34% Annual physical exams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24% Specialist visit (endocrinologist, OB-GYN, nutritionist, dermatologist)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18% Physical therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3% Other (i.e., prescription requests and refills, general medical questions, minor cuts\/scrapes\/reactions)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We talked to healthcare professionals to get their perspectives on using telehealth for this type of care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are mixed perspectives on whether annual physicals can be done via telehealth. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sachinguptamd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sachin Gupta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a pulmonologist in the San Francisco Bay area says physical exams (including breast exams, Pap smears, and prostate exams) are not possible. On the other hand, Jenna Liphart Rhoads, RN, a nurse and educator for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursetogether.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NurseTogether<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says it\u2019s absolutely possible. Both mentioned that having thermometers, blood pressure monitors, oxygen sensors, and scales at home is helpful for these types of virtual visits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor those who have chronic health conditions (i.e. hypertension, diabetes, heart disease), virtual visits may not be practical because things such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and vascular wellness may not be able to be accurately measured virtually,\u201d Rhoads says. \u201cSomeone with multiple chronic illnesses or symptoms that have exponentially increased would most likely need to be seen in-person for the most accurate diagnoses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPhysical therapy can absolutely be done through telehealth, especially when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dealing with joint pains or a chronic injury,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/keeptheadventurealive.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alyssa Kuhn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DPT, a mobile therapist in Sandy, Utah. \u201cIn certain situations, I have found it to be better than in-person therapy because you understand how to actually complete the movements and mobility exercises at your own home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the healthcare professionals we talked to encourage patients to view telehealth as a convenient starting point rather than an extra step or a hassle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Telehealth-Services-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26711 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Telehealth-Services-1.png\" alt=\"Chart illustrating survey takers' willingness to use particular telehealth services\" width=\"1414\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Telehealth-Services-1.png 1414w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Telehealth-Services-1-300x100.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Telehealth-Services-1-1024x340.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Telehealth-Services-1-768x255.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1414px) 100vw, 1414px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-teletherapy\/\"><b>How to find a therapist during a pandemic<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"telehealth-advantages\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saving time, not having to travel, and appointment availability are the most appealing aspects of telehealth<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthaffairs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1377\/hlthaff.2016.1130\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2017 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the average time spent on an in-person visit was 121 minutes. This included time spent traveling, waiting, and actually seeing the doctor. Because telehealth does not require transportation, there was a 31% reduction in time needed for a telehealth visit by eliminating travel time alone. This is in stark contrast to other telehealth surveys that were conducted in the year leading up to the coronavirus pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajmc.com\/view\/patient-and-clinician-experiences-with-telehealth-for-patient-followup-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in January 2019 found that 82% would definitely recommend virtual video visits to others, and 69% rated their virtual visit a 9 or 10 out 10 (10 being the best visit). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.softwareadvice.com\/resources\/should-you-offer-telemedicine-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted in July 2019 found that 81% of respondents were more likely to choose a provider who offered telemedicine services over one who does not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, after a year of virtual visits, it seems as if some people are having second thoughts on telehealth. We asked respondents about when they used telehealth services for the first time. Only 5% had reported using telehealth before the COVID-19 pandemic (2019 or earlier); whereas, 46% have used telehealth within the past year (2020).<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7% Within the last month<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21% Within the last six months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18% Within the past year<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% It\u2019s been more than a year ago (2019 or earlier)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49% I have not had a telehealth appointment<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"telehealth-reviews\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of those who have used telehealth services, 78% were satisfied with their experience<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although 26% of respondents were reportedly unwilling to use telehealth services and 68% would prefer in-person visits post-pandemic, 94% of respondents who <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used telehealth services felt reportedly satisfied or neutral with their experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>42% Extremely satisfied<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These respondents often mentioned that telehealth saves them time, it\u2019s very easy, and they liked that they didn\u2019t have to travel.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>36% Somewhat satisfied<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These respondents reported that their experience was okay.
