placebo group of schizophrenic adults not taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperdal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results showed a statistically significant increase in the incidence of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the group of adults taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperdal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with 18% of those patients gaining substantial weight. In comparison, only 9% of the adults in the placebo group gained significant weight. For this study, significant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was defined as a gain of more than 7% of the individual&#8217;s body weight over a six to eight-week period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in itself may not warrant immediate medical attention, obesity generally<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2879283\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases the risk of various diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and cancer. Affected individuals should consult with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regarding healthy weight management options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/About-Mental-Illness\/Treatments\/Mental-Health-Medications\/Types-of-Medication\/Risperidone-(Risperdal)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Alliance on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental Illness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may sometimes be prescribed &#8220;off-label&#8221; as an adjunct treatment for depressive disorders (e.g., it&#8217;s prescribed in addition to an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Off-label means that the Food and Drug Administration (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has not approved the medication for the treatment of this specific condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18681749\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Psychiatry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examined <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and suicidality in individuals with major depressive disorder, MDD. The study looked at the efficacy of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an adjunct <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment for individuals with MDD with suicidal thoughts. The results suggest that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be beneficial in augmenting treatment for MDD patients with high-risk suicidal ideation and may be especially useful in managing severe depressive symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0239206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study published in PLOS ONE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> investigated the all-cause mortality risk of antipsychotic augmentation for adult depression. It concluded that augmentation with newer antipsychotics was associated with a greater mortality risk when compared with the alternative of adding a second <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the study alone cannot prove causality, the study&#8217;s conclusions recommend healthcare providers be aware of this potential for more significant mortality associated with newer psychotic augmentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depressive symptoms, in particular suicidal ideation, are a high-risk health issue. Affected individuals should report to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"gynecomastia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gynecomastia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperdal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is linked to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gynecomastia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the technical term for enlargement of male breasts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2010\/020588s046lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperdal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> intake may be associated with a slightly heightened risk of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gynecomastia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The clinical trial studied 1885 adolescents and children. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gynecomastia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was reported in 2.3% of those patients treated with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperdal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gynecomastia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may slightly increase an individual&#8217;s risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/news-events\/press-releases\/2014\/breastcancermalepoolingstudy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developing male <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (change resource?). Although the heightened risk is small, it&#8217;s advisable to consult a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in case of complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"withdrawal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperdal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be habit-forming. Possible symptoms of withdrawal include dizziness, sleepiness, nausea, and returning schizophrenic symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2010\/020588s046lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withdrawal study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manufacturer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">examined patients who had shown a positive response to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperdal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (defined as at least a 25% improvement according to the defined scale) over four to six months. The patients were randomly assigned into a placebo and a test group to examine withdrawal. An analysis of patients who completed the withdrawal study showed a significantly lower relapse rate in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperdal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> patients versus the placebo group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A case study published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6386429\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychopharmacology Bulletin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examined an instance of akathisia induced by abrupt <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risperidone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> withdrawal. Akathisia is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movement disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has previously been associated with withdrawal of antipsychotic treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case of withdrawal symptoms, individuals should consult a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
