As you swallow the pill with some water, panic sets in! Other similar prescription medications that you may have heard of in the SSRI drug class include: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fluoxetine), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paxil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (paroxetine), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/celexa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celexa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (citalopram), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lexapro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (escitalopram). Consult your healthcare provider for a complete list of side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you mix Zoloft and alcohol?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer is no, it\u2019s not safe to mix Zoloft with alcohol. The prescribing information explains that Zoloft can make you sleepy, affect decision making, and impair reaction time. It explicitly states that you should not drink alcohol while taking Zoloft\u2014or drive, operate heavy machinery, or participate in dangerous activities for that matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you drink alcohol while taking Zoloft?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol can make the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sertraline-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Zoloft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happen more quickly and\/or intensely, causing excess sedation, dizziness, headaches, suicidal thoughts, stomach problems, respiratory depression (slowed breathing), and general impairment. Some individuals may not experience side effects if only a small amount of alcohol was consumed. If you consumed a large amount of alcohol, feel suicidal, or experience severe side effects, get emergency medical help right away.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does alcohol make depression worse?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. Though it may temporarily make you feel better, alcohol can actually worsen symptoms of depression in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanaddictioncenters.org\/alcoholism-treatment\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long term<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as anxiety, fatigue, irritability, and feelings of worthlessness. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/find-help\/atod\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that over 19 million people age 18 years and older had a substance use disorder in the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/disulfiram\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antabuse (disulfiram)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat alcohol dependence, you should not take Zoloft oral solution. It contains 12% alcohol, and the combination can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and chest pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need help for an alcohol abuse or substance use disorder, you can call the SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) helpline at 1-800-662-HELP or visit the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/find-help\/national-helpline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for yourself or a loved one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk of suicide<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoloft, and every antidepressant, has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boxed warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the strongest warning required by the FDA) that antidepressants can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior. Researchers in one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2872355\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that people with alcohol dependence and depression have a higher risk for suicide.
