A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nsfg\/key_statistics\/c.htm#contraception\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study revealed that almost 25% of women who used birth control prevention during the years 2011 to 2015 had tried the birth control shot, making it a more common option during that time frame than the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/iud-birth-control-contraceptive-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-patch-xulane-contraceptive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormone patch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it\u2019s not as long-acting as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nexplanon-vs-mirena\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or IUD, the birth control shot does last longer than the pill or patch since every dose of the shot is effective for approximately three months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How does the Depo shot work?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depo-Provera (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/depo-provera\/what-is\">what is Depo-Provera?<\/a>) is an injectable form of birth control that uses 150 mg of the hormone medroxyprogesterone acetate (a progestin) to stop ovulation and thicken your cervical mucus. It\u2019s typically injected into your upper arm or buttock by your healthcare provider at his or her office every 12 to 13 weeks. Depo-Provera is an IM (intramuscular injection), which means that it is injected into a muscle. It is available in both brand-name and generic form.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Depo-Provera is also available at a lower dose under the name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/depo-subq-provera-104\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depo-SubQ Provera 104<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there is no generic available in that dose.) This version is a subcutaneous injection, which means that it is injected just under the skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Depo shot begins working immediately with no need for backup birth control if you get it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/contraception\/mmwr\/spr\/injectables.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within seven days of the first day of your menstrual period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you get your contraceptive injection outside of this time frame, you\u2019ll need to abstain, or use a backup method (like condoms) for a week after your first shot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The birth control shot is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when it\u2019s administered perfectly on time, which is somewhere between 12 to 13 weeks. If you\u2019re unable to make it to your healthcare provider\u2019s office in that time frame or if you forget to make a follow-up appointment, the Depo-Provera shot\u2019s effectiveness drops to 94%, and you may have to get a pregnancy test before your next dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Are there any Depo shot side effects?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most common side effects associated with Depo-Provera go away after two or three months of beginning the shot, but here are a few to keep in mind:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast tenderness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruising or tenderness at the injection site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cramping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased sex drive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue, weakness, or tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular menstrual periods, including no period at all<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nervousness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-birth-control-cause-weight-gain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience heavy vaginal bleeding, severe migraine with aura, an allergic reaction, and\/or severe depression, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depo-Provera may increase your risk of certain cancers and ectopic pregnancy, and it shouldn\u2019t be used by anyone who has or has had breast cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the advantages of the Depo shot?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Privacy: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only you and your healthcare provider need to know that you\u2019re on birth control.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Convenience: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t require a daily dose. There\u2019s also no need to use a condom for pregnancy prevention\u2014but condoms should still be used to prevent sexually transmitted infections.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Period symptoms: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The birth control shot could lessen your menstrual flow or even stop it altogether, and it can also help with cramping and pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Health benefits: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can decrease <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/depo-provera\/about\/pac-20392204\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endometriosis and uterine fibroids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the risk of endometrial cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can increase your odds of getting your shot on time if you use a calendar or app with reminders, if your healthcare provider\u2019s office provides courtesy calls or emails when it\u2019s time to schedule your next appointment, or if you schedule your next shot at the time of your current appointment. Remember, the shot is more effective when you are on time for your injection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the disadvantages of the Depo shot?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the more serious concerns to weigh when you\u2019re considering Depo-Provera, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2010\/020246s036lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Fertility:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It may take up to several months for your menstrual cycle to return to its normal schedule, and it could significantly delay your ability to conceive up to 18 months after your last shot. (The median time is 10 months but may range from four to 31 months.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Sexually transmitted diseases:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The birth control shot doesn\u2019t protect against STDs, so condoms and other barrier methods are still required for safer sex.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Loss of bone density: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You and your healthcare provider discuss your risk factor for osteoporosis beforehand. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recommended that Depo-Provera not be used longer than two years because some patients do experience loss of bone mineral density, which may be significant. The FDA label states that bone loss is greater with a longer duration of use and may not be completely reversible. Patients are encouraged to take vitamin D and calcium to prevent bone loss.
