And approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/liverfoundation.org\/for-patients\/about-the-liver\/diseases-of-the-liver\/non-alcoholic-fatty-liver-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people in the U.S. have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); it\u2019s the most common liver disease in children. The more severe form is called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which may progress to more serious conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is fatty liver dangerous? Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanaddictioncenters.org\/alcoholism-treatment\/alcoholic-fatty-liver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> heavy drinkers with fatty liver disease will develop alcoholic hepatitis, most NASH and NAFLD patients won\u2019t experience any major issues. And the good news is that it doesn\u2019t have to be a permanent condition. When it comes to fatty liver disease treatment, it\u2019s essential to make strategic and lasting dietary changes, rather than just avoiding or integrating random foods here and there. \u201cThe most important part of these changes is that they should be sustainable,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidzmedical.com\/provider\/aymin-delgado-borrego-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aymin Delgado-Borrego<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, pediatric and young adult gastroenterologist and public health specialist at Kidz Medical Services in Florida. So what foods are good for liver repair? For a balanced diet, Dr. Delgado-Borrego says half of any plate of food you are eating should be fruits and vegetables, one quarter should be protein, and the other quarter should be starches.\u00a0 You can always reference the foods to eat and avoid, or just remember these two main rules to improve fatty liver:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opt for low-calorie, Mediterranean-style choices. Eat lots of plant-based foods, whole grains, extra virgin olive oil, and fish\u2014with poultry, cheese, and other dairy in moderation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid added sugars, processed meats, and refined grains.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe best way to ensure significant resolution or even cure [fatty liver disease] is losing approximately 7%\u201310% of your body weight,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.austingastro.com\/our-providers\/our-physicians\/sanaa-arastu-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanaa Arastu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified gastroenterologist with Austin Gastroenterology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 foods to eat<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts recommend these foods in particular for a healthy liver:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Almond milk or low-fat dairy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Delgado-Borrego says adults and children with fatty liver disease need to pay attention to calcium consumption. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is some emerging evidence over the last couple of years that adequate calcium and vitamin D intake may help to prevent the development of fatty liver disease,\u201d she explains and adds that further investigation is needed. \u201cIn addition, patients with advanced liver disease have problems due to multiple nutritional complications and can develop early osteopenia and osteoporosis. Fatty liver disease does not necessarily diminish calcium absorption. Calcium is simply important to all.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink up to three glasses of either of these kinds of milk per day, or take calcium and vitamin D supplements (calcium dosing is usually 1,000-1,200 mg while vitamin D is 2,000-5,000 IU if you are deficient).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Coffee:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Without added sugar or creamers, coffee has been shown to be one of the most effective ways at present to improve fatty liver. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears that coffee may reduce the permeability of the gut, making it more difficult for people to absorb fats,\u201d explains Dr. Delgado-Borrego. \u201cHowever, this is still under investigation and the answer to this question is not yet completely known. Nevertheless, there is growing evidence that coffee has beneficial effects in helping to reduce fatty liver disease.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple cups of coffee might be recommended, depending on the patient.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Foods rich in vitamin E, including red bell peppers, spinach, peanuts, and nuts: <\/b>Dr. Delgado-Borrego recommends these types of foods, rich in vitamin E, as a great addition to fatty liver diets. While more studies are needed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5789322\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one<\/a> study concludes that the vitamin shows modest improvement for people who have NAFLD or NASH. The recommended dose is 400-800 IU daily.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Water: <\/b>Experts recommended sticking to this beverage as much as possible over sugary and high-calorie alternatives. The average person, with no medical conditions that would limit fluid intake, should drink between a half ounce and an ounce of water for every pound of body weight daily to avoid dehydration and its negative effects on the liver.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Olive oil: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain oils can provide healthy fats, such as olive oil and avocado oil. These help with feelings of satiety and reduce <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4588084\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver enzyme levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other types of oil that are high in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000785.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monounsaturated fats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include sesame, peanut, sunflower, canola, and safflower oil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/17651-plant-sources-of-omega-3s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Flax and chia seeds<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are plant sources of omega-3 acids. Registered dietician <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thedishonnutrition.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandy Younan Brikho<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MDA, RDN, recommends these acids for both nonalcoholic and alcoholic fatty liver, as they may reduce the fat content in the liver.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Garlic:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4763563\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that upping your garlic intake (specifically through garlic powder but other forms work, too) over a 15-week period led to decreased body fat mass in people with NAFLD and also reduced the fat in the liver and prevented the progression of the disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Soy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some evidence suggests that soy products, such as soy milk or tofu, may improve fatty liver. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/07315724.2018.1479990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says that research has shown improvements in the metabolic parameters in people with NAFLD.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 foods to avoid<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The foods to avoid are typically those that can spike blood sugar levels, or lead to weight gain, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Juice, soda, sugary beverages, and refined carbohydrates like white bread:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Delgado-Borrego tells her patients to avoid these as \u201cthe enemy of the liver are sugars and carbohydrates.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diet drinks that are low calorie:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Delgado-Borrego says sugar substitutes can also cause more liver damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Butter and ghee:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These foods are higher in saturated fat, which Younan Brikho says has been associated with high <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-triglycerides-treatment-options\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triglycerides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the liver.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sweet baked goods and desserts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (cakes, pastries, pies, ice cream, cake, etc.): These types of sugary carbs are detrimental to success if you are trying to reverse fatty liver disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bacon, sausage, cured meats, and other types of fatty meat: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are high in saturated fats, and therefore not recommended by our experts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alcohol: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not recommended by our experts if you have fatty liver disease that was the result of heavy drinking, as it will simply lead to further liver damage. Dr. Delgado-Borrego recommends 60 minutes of physical activity each day but encourages people who find this intimidating to split the sessions into smaller increments, such as four 15-minute walks. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/our-work\/physical-activity\/current-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls for 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity and also recommends strength training at least twice per week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Get more ZZZs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While sleep is important for everyone, it can be even more so for people with liver diseases. \u201cConditions such as obstructive sleep apnea are common and can worsen liver disease by diminishing oxygen supply to the liver,\u201d Delgado-Borrego says. \u201cPeople with possible sleep problems should be formally evaluated for them.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/how-sleep-works\/how-much-sleep-do-we-really-need\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sleep Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends seven to nine hours per night for adults. Try gradually going to bed a few minutes earlier each night instead of trying to alter your morning schedule, which might be tougher.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Discuss supplements with your healthcare provider<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of our experts recommend consulting with a healthcare provider first before starting any supplements. This is especially true for vitamin E, a commonly used supplement for people with liver issues, because taking too much can result in other health complications such as cardiovascular issues. Try medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are currently no FDA-approved medications for fatty liver disease, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/fatty-liver-disease-what-it-is-and-what-to-do-about-it-2019011015746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although new medications are expected to come on the market in the near future.
