These warning signs let you know it\u2019s coming, but you wonder, how long can a migraine last? When will you be able to resume your normal life?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is migraine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine is a type of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/migraine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that brings on moderate to severe pain. Migraine attacks unfold through a cascade of events. Migraines often cause episodic pain, located on one side of the head that feels like throbbing or pulsing pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although migraine has a genetic cause (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/migraine.com\/migraines-and-family-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people with migraine have a family history of migraine), some triggers can cause migraine attacks. Common triggers include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress or anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluctuation of hormones, menstrual period<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bright lights, loud noises, powerful smells<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too little or too much sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden weather or environmental changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess physical activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain foods, such as alcohol, chocolate, aged cheeses, food additives like MSG (monosodium glutamate), fermented or pickled foods, yeast, cured or processed meats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skipped meals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspartame, nitrites, alcohol, caffeine, or other substances that make your blood vessels contract then dilate<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is migraine?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine is the third most prevalent illness in the world, according to the Migraine Research Foundation. Almost 1 in 4 households in the U.S. includes someone with migraine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine is much more common in women, affecting three times as many adult women as men. Migraine is poorly understood and often undiagnosed and undertreated. The condition has a tremendous economic impact: People who live with migraine may have high medical costs, limited support, or poor access to quality care. In fact, migraines are a common cause of disability and ranked second (after low back pain) with respect to life lived with disability.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine symptoms vary, but you may experience some of the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/what-is-migraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate to severe headache pain, usually unilateral, but not always\u2014which can be\u00a0 either side of the head or in the front or back<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head pain that can feel like throbbing, pounding, or pulsating and worsens with movement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity to light, noise, smells<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A migraine attack can be so severe as to lead to missed work or school days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way to remember migraine symptoms is with the acronym <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/pain\/when-headaches-are-more-than-a-pain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">POUND<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>P:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pulsating pain<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>O:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One-day duration of severe untreated attacks<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>U:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unilateral pain (pain on one side)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>N:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nausea\/vomiting<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>D:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Disabling intensity<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do migraines last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical migraine attack can last from four hours to 72 hours\u2014but can vary widely. Migraine attacks occur in phases. It can be helpful to recognize the first stage\u2014when migraine attack is coming on\u2014so you can take medication as recommended by your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every phase occurs during every attack. Identifying and avoiding the things that trigger your migraine onset is key. \u201cTrigger avoidance is a very important treatment strategy that allows us to reduce migraine attack frequency naturally,\u201d Dr. Feoktistov says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine can be challenging to diagnose and treat, but there are many helpful medications and strategies. Seek advice from a headache specialist if you experience moderate or severe headaches that are difficult to control. A headache specialist can help to establish a treatment plan that includes preventive and acute treatment for migraine pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventive treatment\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventive treatment aims to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks and may take several weeks to start working. It should work quickly, within one or two hours, Dr. Feoktistov explains. Abortive treatments work best when given early in the course of a headache and in a single large dose (instead of repeated small doses).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2018\/0215\/p243.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for migraine can include one or a combination of the following medicines:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter medications (OTC) pain relief such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, or combination medications containing aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triptans such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/imitrex\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imitrex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/relpax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relpax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zomig\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zomig<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which come in a variety of formulations (a non-oral route of administration may be needed for patients with significant nausea or vomiting)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-nausea medications may be needed to be given intravenously: metoclopramide or prochlorperazine\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fioricet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fioricet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine) and opioid pain relievers may be prescribed if all other treatments fail<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With any acute treatment, there is a possibility of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/stopping-the-vicious-cycle-of-rebound-headaches-2019110718180\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication overuse headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or rebound headache. There is also the potential for side effects. For example, triptans come with a risk for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially when combined with other medications that increase serotonin levels. Keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider to ensure you are getting the proper treatment with minimal side effects and no drug interactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical devices<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also talk with your headache specialist about noninvasive neuromodulation devices. Limited data from small randomized controlled trials suggest the use of electrical current or magnets to prevent or treat migraine: gammaCore, Nerivio, Cefaly, or Relivion. \u201cThese devices have demonstrated good efficacy and an excellent side effect profile,\u201d Dr. Feoktistov says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone has a different medical history and takes different medications. Talk to your healthcare provider about all of the health conditions you have, all of the medications you take (including prescription, OTC, and vitamins), and your unique treatment needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long is too long for a migraine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every 10 seconds, someone in the U.S. goes to the emergency room for head pain. So when should you go to the ER for migraine? According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/when-to-go-to-the-er-for-headache-migraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Migraine Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the best reason for an ER visit is for unusual symptoms that are new to you.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not sure when you should go to an emergency department? You should go if you have:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A severe headache that comes on within seconds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new or unusual symptom like fever, numbness, weakness, vision problems, or confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new unusual headache while pregnant<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A headache with an immunocompromised immune system<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A headache with other serious medical conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A migraine attack that lasts longer than 72 hours (this is called status migrainosus)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken headache medication and it is not working or your pain is debilitating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent aura with the aura symptoms lasting for one week or more, as this may require neuroimaging<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurologic changes, such as stiff neck, visual changes, personality change, or disorganized thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Migraine Foundation reminds patients that there is not one universal protocol for treating headache or migraine in the ER. Different ER doctors may approach treatment in different ways. For the long-run you should follow up with your headache specialist to establish or tweak your treatment plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t give up<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If one treatment hasn\u2019t worked, there are always other options to try. \u201cThere are many effective ways to treat migraine headaches and that may include lifestyle changes, diet, and supplements, pharmacological therapy, noninvasive neuromodulation, as well as interventional treatment including a variety of nerve blocks and other interventions that might be very helpful,\u201d says Dr. Feoktistov.
