The annual exam is a basic review and exam including a Pap test.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"5-questions-to-ask-a-gynecologist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 questions to ask a gynecologist<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What questions should you ask? Really anything\u2014be it a concern or a curiosity. If it has to do with your reproductive or even your general health, it\u2019s fair game. Here, five questions to consider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-is-my-period-normal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Is my period normal?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNormal\u201d varies from woman to woman. Menstrual cycles are counted from the first day of bleeding one month to the first day of bleeding the next month, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/health-and-wellness\/menstruation\/how-do-i-know-if-my-menstrual-cycle-normal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On average, that\u2019s about 25-30 days, although having a cycle that\u2019s as short as every 21 days or as long as every 35 days is also considered normal. Bleeding generally lasts two to seven days, but that can vary based on factors such as your age and your birth control method.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does a medical professional determine whether you might have a problem with your menstrual cycle? \u201cWe look at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/family-health-history\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">woman\u2019s personal and family history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, her hormonal status [for example, if she\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ovulation-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovulating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-perimenopause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">], bleeding disorders as well as anatomic concerns, just to name a few things,\u201d says Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhhospitals.org\/doctors\/varyani-sandhia-1952391823\">Varyani<\/a>. \u201cTesting depends on many findings.\u201d Your doctor may look into include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imaging<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgery or medical procedures\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"2-should-i-be-screened-for-an-sti\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Should I be screened for an STI?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and the sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) they cause, are ailments passed from person to person via oral, vaginal, or anal sex. (They can also be passed through the sharing of needles.) These conditions, which include things like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/chlamydia-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlamydia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hiv-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gonorrhea-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/herpes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genital herpes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can impact a woman\u2019s health and fertility, leading to things like cervical cancer, pelvic pain, and ectopic pregnancy (when a pregnancy grows outside the uterus).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STIs and STDs are common. April of every year is STD Awareness Month, dedicated to improving understanding of these health conditions. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that there were more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sti-statistics\/annual\/\">2.4 million STIs reported in the United States in 2023<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To make matters worse, their symptoms can be silent, meaning an infection can be passed unknowingly between partners whenever they have unprotected sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cScreening for sexually transmitted infections should be part of every annual well-woman visit,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ochsner.org\/doctors\/amanda-henne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amanda Henne, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, OB-GYN with Ochsner Health. \u201cYour gynecologist will likely ask you questions about your sexual practices to better assess if you\u2019re at higher risk and to help guide screening recommendations.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some questions you\u2019re likely to be asked include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are your sexual partner(s) men, women, or both?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many sexual partners have you had?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What kind of sexual contact are you having or have you had in the past? Genital, anal, oral?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you and your partner(s) using protection against STIs?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you or your partner ever been diagnosed with an STI?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"3-do-i-really-need-to-do-a-monthly-breast-exam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Do I really need to do a monthly breast exam?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might if you\u2019re at a higher-than-average risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/breast-cancer-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for example, you have a mother, sister, or child with breast cancer).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re at average risk, both the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/practice-bulletin\/articles\/2017\/07\/breast-cancer-risk-assessment-and-screening-in-average-risk-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ACOG) and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/breast-cancer\/frequently-asked-questions-about-the-american-cancer-society-new-breast-cancer-screening-guideline.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Cancer Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say that a breast self-exam is not essential, as there\u2019s little evidence that it detects cancer or improves survival rates. These experts also note that many women normally have lumpy, bumpy breasts, so a self exam can produce a lot of needless worry and unnecessary biopsies. What experts do recommend, however, is developing \u201cbreast self-awareness.\u201d To do that, they advise that you become familiar with the way your breasts look and feel so if changes do occur you can spot them early and talk about them with your health care provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the average-risk patient, it\u2019s recommended [by ACOG] to have a clinical breast exam [which is performed by a healthcare provider] every one to three years from ages 25-39 and annually at age 40; yearly mammograms should also begin at age 40,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ochsner.org\/doctors\/caitlyn-ranger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caitlyn Ranger, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an OB-GYN at Ochsner Health. \u201cThese recommendations may differ for someone who has a higher lifetime risk based on their own or their family history.\u201d Additionally, the American Cancer Society no longer recommends routine clinical breast exams, so it\u2019s good to ask an OB-GYN or your primary care provider about what\u2019s best for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our wellness newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Wellness Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-am-i-the-only-woman-in-america-who-s-not-that-interested-in-sex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Am I the only woman in America who\u2019s not that interested in sex?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re in good company. \u201cFemale sexual interest\/arousal disorder, often referred to as decreased libido or sex drive, is extremely common. In fact, approximately 43% of American women report sexual dysfunction at some point in their life,\u201d says Dr. Henne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can cause a sex slump? A lot of things, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep disturbances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-libido-caused-by-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sex-on-ssris\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and anti-anxiety drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical conditions like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal fluctuations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relationship problems\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important that your physician knows your medical, social, and surgical history, as well as the medications and over-the-counter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diet-supplements-can-interact-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019re taking,\u201d says Dr. Henne. \u201cThis may help in diagnosing the underlying cause of your sexual dysfunction and guide the treatment options, which can range from lifestyle modifications, exercises, and therapy to certain medications.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-am-i-using-the-right-birth-control\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Am I using the right birth control?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As your life and your relationships change, so might your birth control method. What seemed like a good choice when you were 25 and dating may not be the optimal option when you\u2019re 40, married, and have completed your family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When choosing the right contraceptive for you, you and your health care provider need to ask a number of questions. For example, how often do you have sex? Are you in a mutually monogamous relationship? Do you want children in the near future? Do you have any health risks that would eliminate certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-options\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth control options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (e.g., women over 35 who smoke or women at high risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/womens-heart-problems\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shouldn\u2019t use certain birth control methods containing hormones). These are aimed at better understanding your reproductive health, and if any additional screenings might be necessary. Some common questions your healthcare provider might ask include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you sexually active?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you using birth control or STI protection?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you happy with your birth control method?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you feel safe with your sexual partner?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are your periods regular?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have any pain or bleeding during sex?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you noticed any changes in the appearance or odor of your vaginal discharge?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you experiencing any itching or unusual sores?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you done a breast check recently?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has anything else in your medical history changed since your last visit?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These questions might feel uncomfortable, or too personal.
