It often happens because your body is changing to welcome a growing baby. One common cause of abdominal pain during pregnancy is a condition called round ligament pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two large ligaments run from your uterus, the organ that feeds a developing baby, down to your groin. \u201cThey\u2019re essentially holding the uterus in place,\u201d says Harpreet Brar, MD, a board-certified OB-GYN at Detroit Medical Center&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/hutzelwomens.com\/meet-the-team\/\">Hutzel Women&#8217;s Hospital<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes round ligament pain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These ligaments stretch as your uterus grows, irritating nearby nerve fibers and causing spasms, numbness, tingling, or other pain sensations. Sudden movements such as quickly standing, laughing, and coughing also rapidly contract and stretch the ligaments. All of these factors can contribute to lower abdomen pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRound ligament pain is a sign that the uterus is growing and expanding, but unfortunately can be very uncomfortable,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Raeonda Bullard, MD, a resident in the department of obstetrics &amp; gynecology at the Medical College of Georgia at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.augusta.edu\/mcg\/obgyn\/residency\/aboutresidents.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Augusta University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of pain usually happens in the second trimester of pregnancy, into the third<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s a common pregnancy symptom <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and other than being uncomfortable, it is not dangerous or permanent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does round ligament pain feel like?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many times, round ligament pain causes discomfort that comes and goes on the right side of the abdomen, pelvis, or hip area. It can also happen on the left or even both sides of the body and radiate to the groin area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is usually a sharp, shooting pain and often can range from moderate to severe in nature,\u201d Dr. Bullard says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain typically lasts for a few seconds at a time. It can also cause:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dull ache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cramping pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle spasms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stretching or pulling sensation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lots of pregnant women notice pain as they change positions, wake up and roll over in bed, or when they\u2019re more active. Pain may also result from prolonged sitting, standing, or repetitive motion. Being active actually can reduce pain.There\u2019s no diagnostic or lab test for round ligament pain. Providers diagnose it based on your symptoms and by excluding other possible causes of pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 pregnancy-safe treatments for round ligament pain<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Round ligament pain is common during pregnancy and treatable at home with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is generally not a cause for concern and can be treated with conservative measures,\u201d Dr. Brar says. To ease pain, experts recommend pregnant women:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try gentle stretches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change positions slowly, which helps to gently stretch ligaments\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flex the hips before coughing, sneezing, or laughing to cut down on ligament strain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid prolonged sitting, standing, or inactivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid rapid or repeated movements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rest<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take Tylenol (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with your healthcare provider\u2019s approval<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 round ligament stretches<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special stretching exercises can also help to relieve round ligament pain. Be sure to go slowly and use a mat to make yourself more comfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat-cow<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Position yourself on your hands and knees with your shoulders over your wrists and hips over your knees. The tops of your feet should also be flat on the mat. For the cow position, take a deep breath in, let your belly fall toward the floor, arch your back, and look up a bit to the ceiling. Then for the cat position, breathe out, push your hands into the mat, round your back, and look down at your belly. Repeat this stretch three to five times.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic tilts<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lay on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the mat. Inhale and squeeze your stomach muscles. Hold, and then push the small of your back into the mat. Slowly breathe out while counting to five. Repeat this stretch three to five times.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Savasana pose<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lay on the mat on your left side in a fetal position. Support your head with your arm or a pillow, and place a pillow in between your legs. Hold this position for several minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other activities that may help<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prenatal yoga and low-impact activities such as fast walking, swimming, or elliptical training may promote core strength, balance, and flexibility\u2014which can reduce overall aches and pains during pregnancy. In addition, if your pain persists, you may benefit from working with a skilled physical therapist to improve your conditioning, posture, and functionality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to avoid<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women should avoid taking Advil or Motrin (ibuprofen), especially during the third trimester. It could cause a critical blood vessel, called the ductus arteriosus, to close while the baby is in the womb. This blood vessel supplies the baby with nutrients and oxygen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also be tempted to use a heating pad to relieve pain. But, heat on the abdomen is harmful since it can raise the baby\u2019s temperature. Heating pads are okay to use for back pain on low heat for no longer than 20 minutes at a time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/safe-medication-during-pregnancy\/\"><b>What medications are safe to take during pregnancy?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to call your healthcare provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women should be aware that there are other causes of pain in the abdomen\u2014some harmless and some serious such as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gas and constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Braxton Hicks contractions (known as \u201cpractice contractions\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ectopic pregnancy, or when an egg implants outside of the uterus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Placental abruption, a potentially deadly condition in which the placenta breaks away from the uterus while the baby is still in the womb<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miscarriage, or the loss of a pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary tract infection (UTI)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preeclampsia, a condition that causes high blood pressure during pregnancy\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sciatica<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some symptoms to look out for that something could be wrong:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent or constant pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharp pain that feels like contractions (comes in waves)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain that becomes more severe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal discharge (bleeding or loss of fluid)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal fetal movement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf a woman feels any of those [symptoms], then it\u2019s unlikely to be round ligament pain,\u201d says Dr. Brar.
