In fact, some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(16)30405-X\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women even avoid taking hormonal birth control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because they believe oral contraceptives (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-birth-control-pill-contraceptive-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth control pills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/iud-birth-control-contraceptive-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intrauterine devices (IUDs),<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-shot-depo-provera-contraceptive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-implant-nexplanon-contraceptive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause weight gain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value=\"{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-sheets-userformat=\"{&quot;2&quot;:6849,&quot;3&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:0},&quot;9&quot;:1,&quot;10&quot;:2,&quot;12&quot;:0,&quot;14&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:0},&quot;15&quot;:&quot;Arial&quot;}\" data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news, according to healthcare providers, is that birth control weight gain isn\u2019t inevitable\u2014or the norm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does birth control make you gain weight?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, birth control does not cause weight gain. \u201cBirth control pills contain hormones and many women are concerned that if they start taking these pills, it will cause weight gain,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/irobundamd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heather Irobunda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an OB-GYN in Forest Hills, New York. \u201cThe reality is there have been many studies that have looked at weight gain and birth control pills and haven\u2019t found a link between the two.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA review of medical studies actually show that today\u2019s hormonal birth control options are unlikely to cause weight gain,\u201d agrees <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/arthur-ollendorff-64491134\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthur Ollendorff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, clinical professor of OB-GYN at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.vtc.vt.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a common misinterpretation of a few other explanations for weight changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Water retention<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temporary side effects of birth control may include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK441582\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluid retention, bloating, or an increase in muscle tissue or body fat.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are short-lived, and will go away in time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome women might perceive fluid retention as weight gain,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.storyofstyle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hina Cheema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, OB-GYN in Troy, Michigan. \u201cYou may be losing fat because of your diet and fitness routine, but your scale doesn\u2019t reflect that. This doesn\u2019t mean you aren\u2019t losing weight, it just means your weight loss may have been replaced by fluid retention, which should improve in two to three months.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average American woman typically puts on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/Nejmoa1014296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately a pound each year,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starting in early adulthood, it\u2019s easy to assume that birth control is the culprit behind those extra pounds. In fact, young women often start using contraception in late puberty or after puberty ends, right when they stop growing taller and normally start increasing their body fat content. When a patient is concerned about body weight after starting contraceptive pills, Dr. Irobunda will ask if anything else has changed in her life such as diet, activity levels, or even whether she is experiencing concerns at home or at work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf someone has new stressors in [her life], that can definitely contribute to weight gain,\u201d says Dr. Irobunda. Exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet can prevent weight gain no matter what form of contraception a woman chooses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Older forms of birth control\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the misconceptions about birth control and weight gain began as a result of older birth control pills that contained higher levels of estrogen hormones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3520685\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that birth control pills developed in the 1950s contained 150 micrograms (mcg) of the estrogen mestranol\u2014whereas newer low-dose birth control pills only contain lower levels of estrogen (20-50 mcg). If you\u2019re concerned, talk to your healthcare provider about low-dose options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our weight management newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Weight Management Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What birth control options make you gain weight?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is one birth control option that has been shown to cause long-term weight gain in some women: hormonal injections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe hormonal contraceptive shot <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-shot-depo-provera-contraceptive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depo-Provera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (aka depot medroxyprogesterone), which is administered every three months, has been shown to cause weight gain in some women,\u201d Dr. Irobunda says. \u201cWith Depo-Provera, women may also notice that it\u2019s more difficult to lose weight.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19622988\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that in the first six months of use, 1 out of 4 women who received the Depo-Provera shot gained 5% or more of their starting weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If weight gain is a concern, you should speak with your provider about alternative birth control options, such as the pill, the ring, the implant, or an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/iud-birth-control-contraceptive-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rather than the shot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that the shot doesn\u2019t contain calories or change your metabolism, rather it increases your appetite. So, for some women, the shot is a great contraception option if they continue to eat healthy foods and portion sizes and stay active.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which birth control doesn\u2019t cause weight gain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pill, the patch (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xulane\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xulane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the ring (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nuvaring\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nuvaring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the implant (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nexplanon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and IUDs (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mirena-52-mg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirena<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paragard-intrauterine-copper\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paragard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are all birth control methods that are unlikely to cause any significant weight gain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/greenjournal\/Fulltext\/2016\/03000\/Association_of_Progestin_Contraceptive_Implant_and.21.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that the implant is unlikely to cause weight gain, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00404-015-3784-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report it. The majority of hormonal IUD users do not pack on the pounds, but about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/iud-weight-gain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% of patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report rising numbers on the scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re worried, there are a lot of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bedsider.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternative options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that never lead to weight gain\u2014including non-hormonal contraception like a copper IUD or barrier methods, also known as condoms. \u201cWomen worried about gaining weight from hormonal birth control should consider non-hormonal methods like the copper IUD or a low-systemic dose of hormone such as progestin IUD,\u201d Dr. Ollendorff says. \u201cSince all birth control methods have possible side effects, I ask my patients about their concerns and choose an option that best fits their needs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCopper, non-hormonal IUDs haven\u2019t been shown to cause weight gain,\u201d Dr. Irobunda agrees. \u201cUltimately, side effects are unique to each woman, so it\u2019s very important to talk to your medical provider to discuss all of your options and concerns.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/iud-weight-gain\/\"><b>Do IUDs (like Mirena) cause weight gain?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most people have heard stories about women who started using a form of birth control only to watch the numbers on the scale slowly start to rise.
