According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=60185c88-ecfd-46f9-adb9-b97c6b00a553\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people who take Lyrica should \u201ca<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">void consuming alcohol while taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyrica<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyrica<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may potentiate the impairment of motor skills and sedating effects of alcohol.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, Lyrica or alcohol, on their own, can cause effects like sedation, dizziness, and impaired coordination. This is known as CNS (central nervous system) depression. Mixing the two causes additive effects and is dangerous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/422104\/Lyrica\/Drug-Interactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyrica and alcohol consumption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also cause respiratory depression. In 2019, the FDA announced that Lyrica\u2014as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/neurontin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurontin (gabapentin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014could cause severe breathing difficulties in people who have respiratory risk factors. These risk factors include older age, reduced lung function (due to pulmonary disease), or the use of opioid pain medications or other drugs that depress the central nervous system\u2014this would include alcohol.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, it\u2019s important to note, people with a history of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lyrica.com\/frequently-asked-questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol or drug problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more likely to misuse Lyrica.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you drink alcohol while taking other anticonvulsants?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/harmful-interactions-mixing-alcohol-with-medicines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, alcohol should not be mixed with any anticonvulsants due to increased drowsiness and dizziness. People who take an anticonvulsant must be monitored for behavior and mood changes, depression, and suicidal thoughts and behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2872355\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reviewed data about alcohol use and suicide and found that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol abuse is a means of easing one\u2019s psychological stress but, at the same time, impacts on all other factors, rendering suicide more likely.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, both alcohol and Lyrica on their own can cause suicidal thoughts or behavior. Together, do they have more of an impact on suicidal thoughts and behavior? There is little data on this, but one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4258812\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests they may.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is different\u2014consult your doctor for medical guidance\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications and alcohol affect everyone differently.
