Hormones, or chemicals made in glands of the endocrine system, are regulators of many bodily processes. They control metabolism, mood, reproductive function, and sexual health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormone dysregulation occurs when too much or not enough of a hormone is released by the endocrine system. In women, hormonal imbalances can cause or worsen symptoms like insomnia, hot flushes, mood fluctuations, anxiety, or depression. Because female hormone levels and fluctuations are complex, it\u2019s important to be aware of how hormones and mental health are connected.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-hormone-dysregulation-affects-women-s-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How hormone dysregulation affects women\u2019s mental health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormones have a powerful effect on women\u2019s brain chemistry, mental health, and mood, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidzmedical.com\/provider\/darren-salinger-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darren Salinger, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the chief of obstetrics and gynecology for KIDZ Medical Services in Miami-Dade. \u201cEstrogen, progesterone, and testosterone all have important roles in women\u2019s health and emotions,\u201d he says. These hormones, when out of balance, can contribute to or worsen existing mental health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reproductive hormones and stress hormones can also cause mental health side effects. \u201cDrops in estrogen and progesterone can make us irritable and anxious,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parkavendo.com\/meet-our-team\/gillian-goddard-m-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gillian Goddard, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a New York\u2013based endocrinologist. \u201cThe stress hormone cortisol can cause anxiety and depression that can be severe if left unaddressed.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/stress\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Mental Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, continuously heightened stress levels can result in a wide array of health issues, including mental health disorders such as anxiety or depression. \u201cWhen stress occurs,\u201d Dr. Salinger says, \u201cit can raise cortisol and DHEA, which leads to a spike in blood sugar and insulin. This in turn can lead to lower serotonin, which provides the calm, feel-good brain neurotransmitter. Ultimately, this sequence causes many kinds of psychological issues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thyroid gland is thought of as the gas-pedal of the body. Hormonal imbalances of the thyroid can also be problematic when it comes to mental health. \u201cBoth an underactive and overactive thyroid can cause anxiety, although the quality of the anxiety can be different,\u201d Dr. Goddard says. \u201cAn underactive thyroid tends to worsen underlying anxiety [and] can also cause depression, [while] an overactive thyroid can cause jittery anxiety similar to drinking too much caffeine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-hormonal-imbalance-symptoms-in-females\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common hormonal imbalance symptoms in females<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal dysregulation can lead to emotional problems, says Dr. Salinger. Unfortunately, it also works the other way around. \u201cHormone imbalance can lead to stress, and stress can lead to hormone imbalance,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In those with underlying depression or anxiety, hormonal dysregulation can worsen emotional issues like irritability, depression and anxiety, Dr. Goddard says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of hormone dysregulation can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depressed mood<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood swings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep disturbances (fatigue and insomnia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li imbalances\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though thyroid hormone and cortisol imbalances affect men and women similarly, the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone can cause mental health changes that are unique to women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor some women, the regular fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone associated with our menstrual cycles can cause extreme changes in mood called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD),\u201d Dr. Goddard says. \u201cThe more extreme changes in hormone levels after giving birth or during menopause can lead to a lot of sudden changes in mood that can be quite disconcerting, and for some women can cause depression and\/or anxiety.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common hormonal health conditions include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hypothyroidism-vs-hyperthyroidism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" conditions can lead to chronic stress, which affects hormone balance and can contribute to mental health issues. For example, foods that may cause hormonal imbalance in females include red meat, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/menopause-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">processed foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/caffeine-and-hormones\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caffeine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hypothyroidism-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and dairy products, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northvalleywomenscare.com\/blog\/4-foods-that-cause-hormonal-imbalance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Valley Women\u2019s Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thyroid imbalances may occur at any age, although they are more common in females older than age 40. Your physician can easily order a blood test to ascertain if your thyroid is working well. The monthly menstrual cycle is a complex orchestration of rising and falling estrogen and progesterone levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese shifts can lead to mood changes, eating changes, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and for some people even depression,\u201d Dr. Salinger says. \u201cThese chronic stressors can lead to thyroid dysfunction.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevations in estrogen, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-progesterone-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">progesterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and testosterone levels during pregnancy can cause hormone imbalances leading to thyroid dysfunction. \u201cAbout 5% of people during pregnancy have thyroid dysfunction,\u201d Dr. Salinger says, who adds that it can take three to four months for levels to return to normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum thyroiditis, which is the inflammation of the thyroid after giving birth, affects 5% to 10% of people, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyroid.org\/postpartum-thyroiditis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to The American Thyroid Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This condition can be mistaken for postpartum blues or depression because it causes depressed mood and fatigue. Your physician can track your thyroid lab work to see if you require medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/menopause-questions-and-answers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also a period of drastic hormonal changes. \u201cThe ovaries still produce hormones, but the levels may be 50% of baseline, causing symptoms of hormone imbalance leading to stress which can affect the thyroid,\u201d says Dr. Salinger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During periods of greater hormonal fluctuation, it\u2019s possible to see an increase in mental health symptoms. A healthcare provider may order a blood test to check your thyroid and for high or low levels of hormones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treatment-options-for-hormonal-dysregulation-in-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment options for hormonal dysregulation in women<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal dysregulation can be treated with a combination of medications and lifestyle changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following medical treatments may be useful in treating hormonal dysregulation:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Type 2 diabetes medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl-er\"><b>metformin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps to sensitize the body to the insulin that you already make. This medication decreases the hyperthyroid symptoms of heart palpitations, insomnia, and anxiety related to too much thyroid hormone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hormone replacement therapy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in perimenopausal or postmenopausal women is started when hot flushes, vaginal dryness, insomnia or moodiness is related to decreased hormones. \u201cHormones may be replaced with what are termed bio-identical formulations for estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone,\u201d Dr. Salinger says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/premarin\"><b>Estrogen<\/b><\/a><b> and <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/progesterone\"><b>progesterone<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be prescribed individually or together to help regulate mood. \u201cFor many people, a low dose birth control pill that contains both hormones will improve mental health even into menopause,\u201d Dr. Salinger says. \u201cThere are other hormone replacement formulations for menopausal treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"natural-remedies-for-hormonal-imbalance-in-females\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural remedies for hormonal imbalance in females<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following lifestyle factors may improve hormone levels<\/span><b>:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>healthy diet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with limited sugar and refined carbohydrates and includes sufficient protein and foods high in omega-3 fatty acid (like salmon) may help to regulate hormone levels, says Dr. Salinger, who also recommends drinking decaffeinated green tea and plenty of water.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get plenty of regular <\/span><b>exercise.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practice <\/span><b>stress reduction techniques<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as meditation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for vitamins for hormonal imbalance in females, the supplement <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/inositol\"><b>inositol<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, occurring naturally in cantaloupes, citrus fruits, and legumes, may be helpful in improving symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If natural remedies don\u2019t control symptoms, see your physician for help. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When dealing with mental health issues like anxiety and depression, it\u2019s easy to overlook hormone dysregulation\u2014but balanced hormones are vital not only for a healthy body, but also for a healthy mind.
