You want to do everything you can to ensure your baby is as healthy as possible, and sometimes it\u2019s not clear what\u2019s best. The coronavirus pandemic has brought additional worry\u2014and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pregnancy-and-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">added to already-existing pregnancy anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contracting COVID-19 infection is frightening and serious for everyone, but there is more concern for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. \u201cUnfortunately, yes, pregnant people are at increased risk of developing serious illness from COVID-19,\u201c says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/alaina-brinley-rajagopal-md-phd-70a71745\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alaina Brinley Rajagopal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, Ph.D., an emergency medicine physician in southern California. Pregnant women with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/chronic-disease-and-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preexisting conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as diabetes or obesity may be at even more risk. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) states that research on transmission of COVID-19 from mother to child during pregnancy is ongoing. Current studies show that it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/coronavirus-covid-19-pregnancy-and-breastfeeding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appears to be rare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After birth, it\u2019s unknown if COVID-19 can be transmitted via breast milk, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/practice-advisory\/articles\/2020\/03\/novel-coronavirus-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the majority of evidence suggests it is not transmitted via breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, COVID-19 vaccines markedly decrease the risk of the mother contracting the infection.\u00a0 This helps both mom and baby. But, this is also one more decision for pregnant women to make.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fertility\">Is it safe to get the COVID-19 vaccine if you\u2019re trying to conceive?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a myth going around about the vaccine supposedly causing infertility,\u201d says Kevin Kathrotia, MD and COO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.millenniumneo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennium Neonatology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Charlotte, North Carolina. \u201cThis was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/news\/news-releases\/2021\/02\/medical-experts-assert-covid-vaccines-do-not-impact-fertility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addressed by ACOG\u2014and has been disproven<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC recommends getting the COVID-19 vaccine anytime, this includes while trying or planning to conceive, stating: \u201cThere is currently no evidence that any vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines, cause fertility problems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pregnancy\">Is it safe to get the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies involving pregnancy and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are ongoing and the results are encouraging.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal trials for the Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson &amp; Johnson\u2019s vaccines found no safety concerns from receiving the vaccine before or during pregnancy. Pregnant women were initially excluded from the vaccine trials, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41577-021-00525-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">57 unplanned pregnancies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurred during the testing for the Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca vaccines. The miscarriage rate between those who did or did not get the COVID-19 vaccine were not significantly different. Vaccinated pregnant women are being monitored on an ongoing basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs of February 2021, over 20,000 pregnant people had been vaccinated in the United States with no adverse effects,\u201d says Dr. Brinley Rajagopal. \u201cBased on what we know about how vaccines work, and that pregnant people are regularly vaccinated with other non-COVID vaccines without risk, it is unlikely the COVID vaccine poses a risk to pregnant people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What side effects are associated with COVID-19 immunization during pregnancy?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-vaccine-what-to-expect\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common to experience side effects after a COVID-19 vaccination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly after the second dose of the two-dose vaccines. Pregnant women have not reported different side effects from non-pregnant people after receiving Moderna or Pfizer vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/expect\/after.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some common side-effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all who are vaccinated can experience after COVID-19 vaccination include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain, redness, or swelling in the arm that received the shot<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These vaccine-related side effects usually resolve within a few days. In the meantime, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/safe-medication-during-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is safe for pregnant women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (acetaminophen) for a temperature over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or muscle pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Should pregnant people get the COVID-19 vaccine?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. The experts, the CDC, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/04\/23\/health\/us-coronavirus-friday\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommend that pregnant women get vaccinated for COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ultimately, this is a decision that should be made with the guidance of a healthcare provider who knows the woman\u2019s circumstances and medical history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Brinley Rajagopal says a provider will consider questions such as: \u201cIs the person in a high-risk job like working in a hospital or grocery store? Do they have any preexisting medical conditions like diabetes or obesity? Are people in their family in high-risk jobs? Are there a lot of people\/kids who live at home and could potentially infect the pregnant person?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women are immunocompromised because of the pregnancy, and are encouraged to protect themselves against preventable infections. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/concerns\/vaccines-during-pregnancy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physicians suggest pregnant women get<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the influenza vaccine, Tdap, and (now) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/how-to-get-a-covid-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the COVID-19 vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Does getting the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy protect the baby?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is evidence that pregnant women who are vaccinated against COVID-19 pass on some protection against the virus to their infants. Further research is expected to find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswise.com\/pdf_docs\/161730970721952_AJOG-4-1-21-vaccination-pregnancy-antibodies.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beneficial results to the baby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when their mother receives COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy, as is the case with other vaccines that have been studied such as the pertussis vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best time to receive the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy (to give maximum protection to the infant and how long that protection lasts) is not yet known.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"breastfeeding\">Is it safe to get the COVID-19 vaccine while breastfeeding?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the COVID-19 vaccine specifically has not been studied in breastfeeding mothers, similar vaccines have shown no risk for lactating women or their infants. Because of this, the COVID-19 is believed to be safe for nursing infants as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/hcp\/acip-recs\/general-recs\/special-situations.html#breastfeeding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because non-live vaccines pose no risk for lactating people or their infants, COVID-19 vaccines are also not thought to be a risk,\u201d says Dr. Kathrotia. \u201cTherefore, lactating people may choose to be vaccinated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Brinley Rajagopal was confident enough in the evidence supporting the safety of the COVID-19 in lactating people, she got the vaccine while she herself was breastfeeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudies have shown that antibodies with neutralizing capacity can be passed to infants in breast milk, so it actually can give the baby some immunity if the parent gets vaccinated while breastfeeding,\u201d says Dr. Brinley Rajagopal. \u201cThis is great since babies can&#8217;t currently be vaccinated and clinical trials are just starting for children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Additional resources on pregnancy and COVID vaccines<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mothertobaby.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MotherToBaby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a free and confidential, CDC-recommended resource to connect with an expert and ask questions about the COVID vaccine and pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts speak English or Spanish and can be reached by phone at 1-866-626-6847 or by live chat through their website. They can also be reached via email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All COVID-19 vaccinated, including pregnant women, are encouraged to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/safety\/vsafe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enroll in the V-safe program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 V-safe is a free smartphone-based tool that uses text messaging and web surveys to give personalized health check-ins after the COVID-19 vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: As experts learn more about the novel coronavirus, news and information changes.
