Both drugs are controlled substances and classified as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/drug-scheduling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule IV drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although both medications are therapeutically known as benzodiazepines, they have some notable differences, which we\u2019ll cover below.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"key-differences-between-ativan-and-xanax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key differences between Ativan and Xanax<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ativan and Xanax are brand-name drugs that are both available in generic form. The generic of Ativan is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lorazepam\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lorazepam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the generic of Xanax is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/alprazolam\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alprazolam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ativan is available as a tablet, injection, and oral concentrate.
