What do I do about health insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve recently lost or left your job, you may be eligible to extend your current coverage under <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-cobra-health-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COBRA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act). This legislation stipulates that\u2014if certain criteria are met\u2014an employer must extend your group health plan for up to 18 months following your change in employment. In some limited circumstances, coverage may last up to three years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three main criteria that must be met for a person to qualify for COBRA health insurance, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, Employee Benefits Security Administration:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your group health plan must be covered by COBRA<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A qualifying event must occur (termination for any reason other than misconduct, leaving a position, or reduction in hours)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must be a qualified beneficiary for that event<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spouses and dependent children may also qualify for COBRA, though the list of criteria differs. (You can see the full list <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/sites\/dolgov\/files\/ebsa\/about-ebsa\/our-activities\/resource-center\/faqs\/cobra-continuation-health-coverage-consumer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you qualify for extended coverage under COBRA, you will be given a specific time period (typically 60 days) during which you can elect coverage, retroactive to the date your coverage otherwise would have ended. If you fail to elect COBRA coverage during this time, you will not be able to do so later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coverage under COBRA is often more expensive than what you paid while employed because your employer was likely helping pay for your monthly premiums. They are not required to do so under COBRA. Coverage length also varies\u201418 months is the minimum, though it could extend to as long as 36 months, depending on qualifying events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information about how to apply for COBRA should be included with the plan information you received when your coverage began. You\u2019ll also likely receive correspondence from your insurance plan or employer about next steps for COBRA once your employment status changes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you decide to not elect COBRA coverage or it is not available to you because you do not meet all of the criteria, you may want to consider the Health Insurance Marketplace (or simply, the Marketplace), where you can compare rates for private health insurance plans. Once again, you\u2019ll want to be aware of certain time restrictions when investigating your options. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/coverage-outside-open-enrollment\/special-enrollment-period\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special Enrollment Period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is typically extended to someone who has recently left or lost their job, but you must select a plan within 60 days before or 60 days after losing your coverage through work. If not, you will likely need to wait until the open enrollment period to get coverage. Also note that open enrollment periods may vary, depending on whether your state has its own exchange or relies on the Federal exchange. For those <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/healthcare\/about-the-aca\/young-adult-coverage\/index.html#:~:text=Under%20current%20law%2C%20if%20your,Not%20living%20with%20their%20parents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under the age of 26<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may be able to join a parents\u2019 plan\u2014depending on their plan\u2014even if you do not live with them or are not financially dependent on them. Conversely, if you are married or in a long-term partnership, you may be able to join your spouse or partner\u2019s employer-sponsored plan. A marriage counts as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/qualifying-life-event-for-health-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualifying life event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means you can be added to your spouse\u2019s plan within 30 days (or longer) of being married. If you don\u2019t meet this deadline, you will likely need to wait until the next open enrollment period to join.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a family member\u2019s plan isn\u2019t an option, you may qualify for coverage under Medicaid or the Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), two federal and state health insurance programs that assist low-income Americans with medical costs (either by providing insurance directly or through a private plan). As of August 2023, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaid.gov\/medicaid\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">83 million Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were covered under Medicaid. The costs and coverage differ from state to state (some states, for instance, provide coverage for any adult whose income falls below a certain threshold each month), so you\u2019ll need to research your state\u2019s requirements. There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/medicaid-chip\/getting-medicaid-chip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two ways to apply for Medicaid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you don\u2019t automatically qualify:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Through the Health Insurance Marketplace: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If after filling out the application, it appears you or someone in your household may qualify for Medicaid, the Marketplace will forward your information to the state agency that administers Medicaid. During this process, you may also qualify for savings (such as an Affordable Care Act subsidy) on a private plan based on your income, which may actually make a private plan within reach financially.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Directly through your state Medicaid agency: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out how to contact yours <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaid.gov\/about-us\/contact-us\/contact-your-state-questions\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/guide-to-medicaid-changes\/\"><b>What to know about this year\u2019s Medicaid changes<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get health insurance back<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re in immediate need of coverage but the open enrollment period is still months away, you may want to consider a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-short-term-health-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short-term health insurance plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a stopgap. Original guidelines passed in 2016 stipulated that short-term insurance could only last three months. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/01\/us\/politics\/trump-short-term-health-insurance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new rules under the Trump administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extend that time period to 364 days, with the possibility of a further extension of up to 36 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be clear, short-term insurance does not offer the same comprehensive coverage that you would get through a group health plan or a qualified plan under the ACA\u2014they are not required to cover prescription costs, for instance, nor maternity costs or people with pre-existing conditions. The upside is that you do not need to wait for an open enrollment period, and coverage typically begins within days of your application being accepted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another source of supplemental insurance is what\u2019s called gap insurance (often referred to as \u201cinsurance for your insurance\u201d). While it\u2019s not intended to be used as a person\u2019s only coverage, some people do use it that way while uninsured. This type of policy usually works in conjunction with your primary health insurance (a group health plan or ACA plan) to provide additional coverage. For instance, if your employer-sponsored plan doesn\u2019t cover dental work, you may be able to find a gap insurance that does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gap insurance coverage is very specific, and may take effect only in certain instances, like a heart attack or stroke. Popular insurance companies include AIG, Aetna, and Aflac, and premiums average around $30-$40 a month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, short-term insurance (and gap insurance as your only means of coverage) are to be used until you can qualify for long-term coverage during an Open Enrollment Period. (Open enrollment for 2025 is Nov. 1, 2024, to Jan. 15, 2025.) While most states adhere to those dates, not all do, so you\u2019ll want to check dates for the state you live in. Additionally, California, Colorado, and Washington, DC, have extended their open enrollment windows permanently.
