A 40-year-old man may be tied up with work and family demands, but taking time to review preventive health strategies could pay health dividends for decades. Men\u2019s physical exams are a critical opportunity to optimize well-being in the short and long term.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"male-exam\">Why do men need an annual physical exam?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A men\u2019s preventive health appointment is typically fully covered by insurance, primarily because it can reduce your risk of illness in the future. This type of checkup can identify current health problems that may have no obvious symptoms\u2014anything from high cholesterol to high blood pressure. It can also identify your risk for developing future health issues based on a combination of physical symptoms, family history, and social habits. The look, feel, and sound of these elements of your exam could provide a clue to an underlying disease process, one that may not be obvious to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men also should prepare for the possibility of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>A prostate exam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during which the healthcare professional inserts a finger in the rectum to feel the prostate. Of note, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29531107\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many experts do not recommend this exam for prostate cancer screening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to the lack of proven benefit. Some healthcare professionals may recommend it every year or it may be performed on an as-needed basis if you have particular symptoms or concerns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>A testicular exam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to check for lumps, tenderness, or changes in size in the testicles. Your healthcare provider may recommend this exam annually or only if you are having a problem. If you\u2019ve noticed a growth or abnormality during a testicular self-exam at home, make sure you notify your provider as there is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/types\/testicular\/patient\/testicular-screening-pdq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no standard screening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for early detection of testicular cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>hernia exam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is the \u201ccough test\u201d that checks for weakness in the abdominal wall between the intestines and scrotum. Sports physicals and commercial driver physicals have historically included this exam. Otherwise, it may be done only if you are having groin pain or swelling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there is a concern based on risk factors or symptoms, a <\/span><b>penis exam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be done to look for abnormal growths or sexually transmitted diseases like genital warts.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The screening tests<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you need are based on the results of the question and examination portions of the annual physical exam. These will also guide recommended lifestyle changes and treatments. At the end of the exam, you should feel better educated about your current health. You should know what you are doing well and what you could improve on when it comes to being proactive about your health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, your healthcare provider will review what <\/span><b>immunizations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you have previously received, if this information is available. You will then get a personalized list of recommended vaccines, which depend on age and risk factors. The pertinent risk factors to consider are numerous. They include social elements, like smoking and sexual habits; medical history, like chronic diseases and immune problems; and surgical history, like prior spleen removal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tests\">What tests should a man have every year?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every man benefits from having BMI and blood pressure measured as part of a men\u2019s physical exam checklist. Screening questions for depression, smoking, drug use, and sexual history are also valuable on an annual basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cancer screening tests<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are recommended for certain men. For example,\u00a0 colorectal cancer screening is routinely initiated at age 45, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34003218\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">based on new guidelines in 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Colon cancer screening may be advisable at younger ages for some men. The screening might involve a colonoscopy or a stool test. While not universally recommended, men over 50 should discuss the option of prostate cancer screening using a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/prostate\/basic_info\/screening.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital rectal examination and a blood test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Depending on age, long-term smokers may consider a CT scan of the lungs to look for early lung cancer and consider an ultrasound looking for an abdominal aortic aneurysm, an abnormal blood vessel enlargement in the abdomen. Doing every test would not be cost effective and may expose you to the risk of false positive tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vaccine\">Which vaccines should men get?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immunization advice must be tailored to your health history. However, with few exceptions, every adult male should get the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 vaccination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on the current guidelines. Likewise, nearly every man should get a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flu shot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to protect against influenza every fall and get a tetanus shot every 10 years. Clearly, there is much to consider when an individualized immunization recommendation is made\u2014just another reason your annual physical exam is essential for your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"costs\">How much does an annual physical exam cost?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good health can require a financial investment. A physical exam is considered preventive care and is typically free with health insurance and Medicaid. However, physical exams are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/coverage\/yearly-wellness-visits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not covered by Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Rather, Medicare (Part B only) covers an annual wellness visit, which is not the same as a physical.
