It\u2019s released during the second half of the menstrual cycle during ovulation. And in order to maintain a pregnancy, you need the right amount of progesterone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cProgestin is a synthetic progesterone used as a hormonal contraceptive and menopause treatment,\u201d says Christina Madison, Pharm.D., an associate professor of pharmacy practice at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.roseman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roseman University of Health Sciences \u2013 College of Pharmacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, by disrupting the amount of progesterone in your body with progestin, you can control your fertility. As with any hormonal birth control method, progestin-only birth control does not protect you from sexually transmitted infections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In birth control, progestin prevents pregnancy by hindering ovulation and making your cervical mucus less attractive to sperm. Progestin also thins the lining of the uterus, and as a result the uterus is less likely to welcome an implanted egg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progestin-only birth control<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several reasons progestin-only birth control, often called the mini-pill, might be better than other methods. It is most commonly prescribed postpartum. \u201cHormonal contraceptives either contain progestin or a combination of progestin and another hormone called estrogen,\u201d says Queen Buyalos, R.Ph., creator of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mommyqueendom.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mommy Queendom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cEstrogen reduces breast milk production.\u201d\u00a0 Because of that, some breastfeeding mothers will want to avoid birth control containing estrogen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in people who are not postpartum, progestin-only contraception is seen as an alternative to those containing estrogen but with the same format, usually a pill but sometimes an implant, IUD, or shot. Estrogen has been known to have some side effects. Estrogen can cause weight gain, bloating, and increased blood pressure, Buyalos says. \u201cTherefore, if you did not want some of the estrogen side effects, it would make sense to choose progestin-only pills,\u201d she says. Progestin has a much lower instance of side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also serious health considerations when it comes to estrogen. \u201cProgestin-only birth control is typically used in individuals who are unable to take estrogen therapy due to contraindications from medical conditions to pose an unacceptable risk,\u201d Dr. Madison says. There is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/contraception\/pdf\/summary-chart-us-medical-eligibility-criteria_508tagged.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a long list <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of contraindications for estrogen use including migraine with aura, smoking and over the age of 35, high blood pressure, history of blood clots, cancer risk or past cancer, especially breast cancer or undiagnosed masses, uncontrolled diabetes, and other conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progestin-only birth control side effects are less common among other birth control options, but you may still get some common side effects such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acne flare<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast tenderness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood changes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If these side effects affect your quality of life, speak to your gynecologist or healthcare provider. Many users find these side effects minor and manageable or that they only occur when you first start the medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, if you are sensitive to mood changes, you should mention that in your appointment as well. \u201cUltimately, if the patient is on too much or too little progesterone it can alter their mood,\u201d Dr. Madison says. \u201cThis is definitely the case when some has too much progesterone that was being supplemented by the use of contraceptive products.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While estrogen birth control has a higher instance of mood issues, progestin can come into play as well. You can look into non-hormonal birth control options like certain IUDs or condoms. Speak to your healthcare provider or gynecologist about what might work best for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More severe side effects come from a progestin deficiency and can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late breakthrough bleeding\/spotting\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delayed onset of menstrual bleeding\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypermenorrhea, aka heavy menstrual periods, which can lead to anemia<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience these more severe side effects, speak to your healthcare provider about options. You may be able to wait and see if your cycle normalizes or you may need to seek an alternate method.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progestin excess can cause:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased sex drive,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hirsutism, a type of hair growth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acne\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased or no menstrual bleeding\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin resistance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased breast size\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the arms or legs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many of these side effects are not necessarily life-threatening, things like high blood pressure and insulin resistance can be very dangerous if untreated or in combination with other health issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is progestin-only birth control right for you?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing a birth control method is equal parts what is right for your body and what is right for your lifestyle. If you are looking for an option postpartum or a birth control with less side effects, the mini-pill could be right for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progestin-only birth control as an oral-contraceptive\u2014if used with absolute perfection\u2014fails less than 0.5% of the time. However, many people miss a pill and the failure rate goes up significantly. It is only effective if you take it at the same time every day to keep a stable dose in your system. So, Dr. Madison advises to only choose the progestin-only oral contraceptive pill if you can take it every day at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those taking the pill postpartum, it\u2019s recommended to set an alarm, leave yourself a reminder, or put the pill somewhere you won\u2019t forget to take it. Failure to take the pill at the same time every day can lead to ovulation and pregnancy if you are sexually active. In this case, you should seek emergency contraception. If you have worries about your ability to adhere to the schedule, you can also use a back-up method of birth control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that progestin-only birth control\u2014in any form\u2014does not protect against STIs, so you will need a backup method in that case as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, your choice of birth control is a decision you can make with your healthcare provider after he or she views your full medical history to rule out contraindications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progestin-only birth control options<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The generic of progestin-only birth control is available as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">norethindrone 35 mcg or drospirenone 4mg.
