The term is often used to describe a single health condition, but there are actually more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/health-wellness\/about-arthritis\/understanding-arthritis\/what-is-arthritis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Arthritis Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains that arthritis is actually a term to refer to joint pain or joint disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis-related conditions affect people of all ages to various degrees. For some, symptoms are mild and they come and go. Others experience debilitating pain that makes everyday tasks\u2014such as walking or climbing stairs\u2014a challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no cure for arthritis or even a universal treatment. Rather, people with arthritis often have to test and implement lifestyle changes with several medications and therapies to find relief, which can be expensive. In 2013, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/arthritis\/data_statistics\/cost.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimated that arthritis costs $2,117 per adult. For National Arthritis Awareness Month, SingleCare conducted a survey of 2,000 adults to get updated arthritis statistics and learn more about how arthritis is affecting Americans\u2019 lives and wallets.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key findings of our arthritis survey:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#types-of-arthritis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32% have arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15% don\u2019t know the cause of their arthritis.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#arthritis-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">87% report pain from arthritis; one-third have difficulty walking.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#affected-body-parts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knees, fingers, and back are the most commonly affected areas among respondents.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#pain-scale\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">82% report mild to moderate pain from arthritis.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#quality-of-life\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">88% say arthritis affects their quality of life.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#arthritis-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">88% take arthritis medication.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#other-treatments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22% have not tried any other arthritis treatments or assistive devices.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#arthritis-treatment-costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26% spend more than $600 per year on arthritis medications and treatments.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"#insurance-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only half receive insurance or Medicare coverage for arthritis care<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"types-of-arthritis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32% have arthritis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 2,000 adults we surveyed, 32% reportedly have arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/resources\/publications\/factsheets\/arthritis.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) as well as our arthritis survey:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18% have osteoarthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8% have rheumatoid arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3% have gout<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% reported other forms of arthritis (i.e., ankylosing spondylitis, degenerative arthritis, arthritis from injuries)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% have psoriatic arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% have spondyloarthropathies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&lt;1% have reactive arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&lt;1% have lupus erythematosus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&lt;1% have juvenile arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&lt;1% have infectious arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/osteoarthritis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351925\">Osteoarthritis<\/a> is caused by a breakdown of cartilage that protects our bones. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, loss of flexibility, bone spurs, and swelling. Although it\u2019s unclear why, women are more likely to develop osteoarthritis. In our arthritis survey, 21% of female respondents reported having osteoarthritis compared to 13% of men. Age, family history, and previous injury were the most commonly reported causes among survey takers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">47% believe age is the cause of their arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45% believe family history is the cause of their arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31% believe a previous joint injury is the cause of their arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26% believe overweight\/obesity is the cause of their arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15% don\u2019t know the cause of their arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11% reported other causes of arthritis (i.e., comorbidities, working environments, weight lifting, stress, diet, and lack of exercise)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% believe their sex is the cause of their arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% reported none of the listed causes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/health-topics\/arthritis#tab-diagnosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NIAMS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) reports that there are likely many genes that put people at risk for arthritis and that injuries and viruses can often trigger the condition. To diagnose arthritis, a general practitioner or rheumatologist will often ask about the patient\u2019s family history, perform a physical exam, run lab tests, and request X-rays.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"arthritis-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">87% report pain from arthritis; one-third have difficulty walking<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to our survey, 99% of respondents with arthritis have symptoms. Pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion were not only the most common symptoms reported in our survey, but they\u2019re also the top warning signs of arthritis, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/health-wellness\/about-arthritis\/understanding-arthritis\/do-i-have-arthritis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">87% experience pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">78% experience stiffness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% experience swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">46% experience reduced range of motion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38% experience difficulty walking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35% experience fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29% experience malaise<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28% experience muscle weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15% experience physical deformities, bumps, bony outgrowths<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12% experience redness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% are asymptomatic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% reported other arthritis symptoms, such as popping or cracking from joints<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"affected-body-parts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knees, fingers, and back are the most commonly affected areas among respondents<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis can affect any part of the body where two or more bones come together. Different types of arthritis affect different parts of the body. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/arthritis\/data_statistics\/comorbidities.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that 49% of adults with heart disease also had arthritis, 47% with diabetes also had arthritis, and 31% with obesity also had arthritis. Living in chronic pain and needing assistance to do daily activities can affect a person\u2019s mental health as well. The majority of survey respondents with arthritis report taking one or more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/arthritis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications for arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Analgesics like acetaminophen and NSAIDs like ibuprofen as well as topical creams and supplements are available in over-the-counter, generic forms. Prescriptions, surgery, and regular therapy are more expensive.
