Symptoms of an allergic reaction include adverse effects such as uncomfortable, itchy skin and hives (red, itchy welts), swelling in the face or throat, burning eyes, painful skin, or a painful, reddish-purple colored skin rash with blistering, peeling skin. Nitrofurantoin-induced lung disease usually gets better on its own after stopping the drug. Patients taking nitrofurantoin long-term must be monitored regularly by a professional to watch for signs of this condition and other serious side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrofurantoin contraindications &amp; warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrofurantoin is not habit-forming, and there are no withdrawal symptoms from discontinuing the medication. However, it\u2019s important to take the medication for the full course (five to seven days for uncomplicated UTI) to receive the full effect of treatment <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/recurrent-uti\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so the infection does not recur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a patient takes more than the recommended dose, vomiting is likely. A high fluid intake should be maintained to promote clearance of the drug. If nitrofurantoin overdose occurs, contact a healthcare provider or poison control center immediately. Nitrofurantoin formulations include capsules and oral suspension (unused liquids should be discarded after 30 days). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/26301\/nitrofurantoin\/Adult-Dosing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrofurantoin doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are different depending on the patient, but typically follows these guidelines:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Adults and children older than 12 years of age:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 50 to 100 mg once a day for prevention or every six hours for treatment of acute UTI infections for five to seven days. Extended-release 100 mg capsules may be prescribed every 12 hours for five to seven days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Maximum dosage: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not exceed 400 mg\/day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dosage in children younger than 12 years of age:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dosage is dependent on body weight and must be determined by a healthcare provider.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restrictions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following groups should not take nitrofurantoin:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infants younger than 1 month old\u2014safety and efficacy have not been established and blood disorders may occur<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women past 38 weeks gestation\u2014alternative medications should also be considered during the first trimester because of the possible risk for birth defects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals with kidney disease, difficulty urinating, or inability to urinate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with a history of liver problems from using nitrofurantoin in the past<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with a history of nitrofurantoin hypersensitivity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caution should be used in patients with the following medical conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compromised kidney or liver function or hepatitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding mothers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes mellitus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anemia, those who have a vitamin B or folic acid deficiency, or a blood electrolyte imbalance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung or breathing problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peripheral neuropathy\u2014a nerve condition with symptoms such as pain, numbness, weakness, and a pins-and-needles sensation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with a blood condition called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency may become more susceptible to hemolytic anemia, a disorder in which red blood cells are destroyed more quickly than they can be produced<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors older than 65 years of age should be careful when taking nitrofurantoin as they may have decreased kidney function and a higher incidence of side effects<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrofurantoin during pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the first trimester of pregnancy, alternatives should be considered because nitrofurantoin use is associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/birthdefects\/features\/kf-women-antibiotic-use-1st-trimeter-birthdefects.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth defects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Otherwise, nitrofurantoin is safe in pregnant women before the 38th week of gestation. Do not use nitrofurantoin at term (beyond 38 weeks), during labor and delivery, or at labor onset. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4055319\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that women who are breastfeeding can safely take the drug, as very little passes into breast milk. However, avoid nitrofurantoin while breastfeeding infants younger than 8 days old and infants with G6PD deficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrofurantoin interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antacids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> containing magnesium trisilicate should be avoided when taking nitrofurantoin, because they reduce the absorption of the drug, decreasing its effectiveness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anesthetics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as lidocaine, articaine, mepivacaine, and ropivacaine should be used with caution with nitrofurantoin\u2014the combo may increase the risk of methemoglobinemia, a blood disorder in which too little oxygen is carried to a patient\u2019s cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Probenecid or sulfinpyrazone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, drugs used in the treatment of gout, increase levels of nitrofurantoin in the blood and may increase toxic side effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The live cholera vaccine and live typhoid vaccine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should not be used concurrently with nitrofurantoin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fluconazole<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when taken with nitrofurantoin, can increase the incidence of lung toxicity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrofurantoin and birth control<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrofurantoin will not affect the efficacy of oral contraceptives. However, it may affect the absorption of the birth control pill if nitrofurantoin causes vomiting or diarrhea longer than 24 hours. If this occurs, consult with a doctor for advice on alternative contraceptive measures. In general, antibiotics such as nitrofurantoin do not affect the effectiveness of birth control pills. The only antibiotic found to impact contraceptives is the tuberculosis medication rifampin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid nitrofurantoin side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To minimize any side effects of nitrofurantoin, make the following considerations:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Take the full course of antibiotics with food<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take nitrofurantoin by mouth with food, preferably with breakfast or dinner, to increase absorption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure to take the medication at the time intervals indicated on the prescription (every six, 12, or 24 hours). It\u2019s also important to take the medication for the full course prescribed (five to seven days) so the infection does not recur. A healthcare professional will regularly monitor patients taking nitrofurantoin long-term for severe side effects or dangerous drug interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the instance of a missed dose, take it as soon as possible, but do not take two doses at a time, or just before the next dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Store the medication at room temperature away from heat. Close the bottle securely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.
