In fact, it\u2019s estimated that some 30 million men in this country are affected by ED, which is also sometimes referred to as impotence. Medically, it\u2019s defined as the inability to get or maintain an erection that is firm enough for sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the risk of ED increases with age, it can\u2014and does\u2014happen to young men. But there are steps you can take to reverse ED and prevent it from becoming a problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGetting an erection is primarily a hemodynamic event,\u201d explains John Valvo, MD, urologist at Rochester Regional Health and senior partner at the Center for Urology in Rochester, New York. \u201cYou need intact vascular, hormonal, and neurological systems, with a psychological overplay. As long as those systems are functioning and not interfered with by disease or medications, one should expect a normal sexual response. Certainly, men in their 80s and 90s are likely going to be impacted by ED. But it\u2019s not normal in young men, and it shouldn\u2019t be something that\u2019s accepted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"at-what-age-does-erectile-dysfunction-start\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At what age does erectile dysfunction start?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There isn\u2019t an official \u201cerectile dysfunction age,\u201d but erection problems like ED mainly affect men over 40, with prevalence increasing with age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/14746514020020040801?journalCode=dvda\"><b>52% of men aged 40-70 had some ED<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Massachusetts Male Aging Study, a landmark piece of research investigating ED in healthy men. Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5503428\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at over 2,700 men found that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17% of men age 40\u201349 had ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30%\u201335% of men age 50\u201359 had ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">68% of men 60\u201369 had ED<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">83% of men 70 and older had ED<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main reasons older men are more likely to have ED than their younger counterparts is because they\u2019re more likely to have health problems that can impact things like blood flow to the penis (essential for an erection) and nerve functioning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"risk-factors-for-ed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk factors for ED<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the ED risk factors seen more commonly in older men are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diabetes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s been estimated that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/erectile-dysfunction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35%\u201350% of men with diabetes have ED<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s often due to the fact that diabetes can harden the arteries (called atherosclerosis) impairing blood flow and interfering with the nerves that help create and maintain erections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>High blood pressure (aka hypertension):<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15596196\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sixty-one percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of men with high blood pressure have reported experiencing ED.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/chronic-kidney-disease\/\"><b>Kidney disease<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kidneys that aren\u2019t in good working order can impact nerve functioning, energy levels, and the hormones that circulate in our bodies. And when those things falter, erections can suffer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cardiovascular disease:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, one of the earliest signs of heart disease is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/erectile-dysfunction-and-your-health-5-things-you-need-to-know\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inability of blood vessels in the penis to enlarge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing enough blood flow to get and maintain an erection. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2018\/07\/11\/erectile-dysfunction-may-be-warning-sign-for-more-serious-health-problems\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at racially diverse men with an average age of 69 and no prior history of heart disease found that 46% had ED. At the end of the four-year study, researchers found that those men with ED had over twice the number of heart attacks, cardiac arrests, and strokes than the men without ED.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prostate disease:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The prostate is a small gland that lies between the penis and the bladder. Some of the therapies (certain drugs, surgery) that are used to treat an enlarged prostate and prostate cancer can cause ED.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Obesity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One study found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22315154\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">73% of men with abdominal obesity had some degree of ED<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Obesity causes inflammation throughout the body, and that inflammation can affect blood vessels in the penis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This condition causes the upper airways to collapse during sleep, impeding air (and consequently) blood flow, upping the risk of ED. It\u2019s been estimated that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19570042\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">69% of men with OSA have ED<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, some of the drugs used to treat these medical conditions\u2014including antihypertensives to treat high blood pressure and diuretics used for heart disease\u2014can have ED or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-libido-caused-by-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loss of libido as a side effect.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/erectile-dysfunction-statistics\/\"><b>Erectile dysfunction statistics<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-it-normal-to-experience-ed-at-a-younger-age\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it normal to experience ED at a \u201cyounger\u201d age?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s not common for young, healthy men to have ED, it does happen. In fact, the prevalence of ED in men in their 20s is 8%, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.tamu.edu\/experts\/gabriel-neal.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabriel Neal, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family medicine practitioner and clinical associate professor at Texas A&amp;M University College of Medicine. Research shows that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5313296\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11% of men 30-39 have ED<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it\u2019s often associated with aging, ED in younger men has not been well studied. It\u2019s apparent, though, that young men can have all the health conditions\u2014diabetes, high blood pressure, albeit with less frequency\u2014that predispose older men to problems with their erectile function. They may also have spinal cord or brain injuries that impair sexual performance and limit sexual activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, experts note that ED in younger men is often linked to lifestyle habits and mental health issues that affect sexual health. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Smoking:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A cigarette habit can cause hardening of the arteries involved with erection, including the coronary arteries. One study found that men who smoke marijuana are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6893937\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice as likely to have ED<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than nonsmokers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drinking alcohol in excess:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A study of men with a mean age of 37 found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2917074\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33% of those who chronically used alcohol had ED<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Depression or anxiety:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some research indicates that up to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridgewellbeing.org\/psychological.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% of ED has psychological causes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which isn\u2019t so surprising seeing how sexual performance relies on mental as well as physical cues and stimulation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even one bad experience can have a snowball effect, fostering performance anxiety and low self esteem. \u201cIf a guy has an initial failure [getting or maintaining an erection] it\u2019s like building a house of cards,\u201d notes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochesterregional.org\/physician-directory\/v\/valvo-john\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Valvo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cOne card comes out, and everything else tumbles down.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-do-i-know-if-i-have-ed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I know if I have ED?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erectile dysfunction can often be self-diagnosed by identifying symptoms. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Failure to get an erection at any time<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Failure to maintain an erection during sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being able to get an erection sometimes, but not every time, you want to have sex<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-is-ed-treated\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is ED treated?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/erectile-dysfunction-survey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 39% of respondents with ED never sought treatment. It\u2019s important to know that ED is treatable, and it typically begins with finding the root of the problem. However, before you seek out ED treatment, you\u2019ll need an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-tests-and-diagnosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">official diagnosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Your healthcare provider will get a complete medical history from you and ask you some pointed questions about your sex life and your sexual performance\u2014for example, how satisfying sexual intercourse is for you,how hard your erections are, and whether you experience ejaculation problems. They may also order things like blood tests (to check for diabetes or kidney disease or even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-testosterone-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low testosterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can impact sexual desire) and ultrasounds to see how blood flows through the penis. Family physicians, internists, urologists, and endocrinologists are all equipped to treat the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lifestyle-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of what\u2019s found, your healthcare provider will probably first recommend making lifestyle changes that could improve your sexual performance. These things may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quitting smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing weight<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limiting alcoholic drinks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stopping drug use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeking counseling or treatment for things like anxiety and depression. One caveat: ED can be a side effect of some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sex-on-ssris\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so be sure to discuss with your prescribing physician your sexual performance concerns.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTreatment of the underlying causes of ED is the real key,\u201d says Dr. Neal. \u201cIf it is from a medication, then finding an alternative medication is the first step. If it is stress or performance- anxiety related, then managing that is the first step. Generally speaking, weight loss and increased physical activity have been shown to improve sexual function in men. In men who have obstructive sleep apnea, treatment with CPAP [a machine that delivers pressurized air into the airways via a tube and mask] has been shown to improve sexual function as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-pills-drugs-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (PDE5 inhibitors) that help relax smooth muscle and increase blood flow to the penis are often very effective. Some of these medications include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viagra (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sildenafil-citrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sildenafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cialis (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tadalafil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tadalafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levitra (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vardenafil-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vardenafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of these drugs are the same in younger men as older ones and can include headaches, stomach upset, and redness of the face and chest. What you probably won\u2019t have to be concerned about? Painful erections that last hours on end. \u201cThese are some of the most prolific drugs prescribed,\u201d assures Dr. Valvo. \u201cThat side effect may be on the warning label, but I\u2019ve never personally seen it happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-ed-treatments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ED treatments<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other treatment options include medications injected into the penis to increase blood flow (one is alprostadil, which can also be used as a suppository in the urethra), penile implants, and vacuum devices that help the penis fill with blood. The male hormone testosterone is sometimes recommended, but generally it is only reserved for men with low testosterone levels and who report having a low sex drive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line: ED is treatable\u2014and reversible.
