Left untreated, the condition stops your breathing several, sometimes even hundreds of times a night. It affects about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3639722\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25% of men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and tends to happen more in people over 50 who carry extra weight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep apnea happens when the tongue and soft tissue at the back of the throat block the airway (obstructive sleep apnea), and in people with disorders of the central nervous system such as a stroke or ALS (central sleep apnea). Men who have surgery to remove one or both testicles after a prostate cancer diagnosis may notice them. Your healthcare provider may ask if you\u2019ve traveled to countries where the disease is more prevalent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the virus that causes AIDS<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Endocarditis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or inflammation of the heart valves, typically from infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Osteomyelitis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or inflammation within the bones, typically from infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pyogenic abscess<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a pus pocket in the liver<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent night sweats<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating the underlying cause of night sweats is the best way to prevent them. \u201cIn some cases, patients will need prescription antiperspirants, creams, nerve-blocking medications, antidepressants, and botulinum toxin injections to help patients with night sweats,\u201d Dr. Rehman says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also lifestyle changes you can make for better sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Limit caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cut back on these things, particularly in the hours before your bedtime. They can elevate your temperature and cause night sweats.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Keep your bedroom cool.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A warm bedroom could set off night sweats. \u201cWhen I see [a patient] I\u2019ll ask at what temperature they\u2019re keeping their room or if they\u2019re using a comforter every night, even in the summer,\u201d says Praveen Rudraraju, MD, medical director, Center for Sleep Medicine at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/sleep-medicine\/dr-praveen-rudraraju-md-11376634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Westchester Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSome people may be very sensitive and their body is trying to cool off, causing night sweats.\u201d He suggests turning the thermostat down to a lower temperature, using lightweight blankets and sheets, turning on a fan, or opening a window to help circulate air. If night sweats seriously impact your sleep, think about trading in your mattress for one that\u2019s more breathable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Wear breathable clothing. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Material like cotton that allows more airflow is preferable over tight-fitting clothing that keeps in heat.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Sip cold water and take a cold shower. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can help bring down your body temperature before bed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.
